This paper presents ongoing research aimed at improving surveying education through the use of virtual environments. Teaching surveying presents several challenges such as low student competence in mathematics, geometry and trigonometry, limited student access to instruments, limited availability of terrains on which to practice, dependency on weather conditions, and more. Prior research suggests that surveying education can be significantly improved with the use of digital teaching aids and virtual instruments. The goal of the work reported in the paper is to enhance traditional surveying instruction methods with a unique approach: an interactive Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) that supports students' mathematical representational fluency and includes realistic virtual terrains and surveying instruments that look, operate, and produce results comparable to the physical ones. The VLE is aimed at undergraduate students enrolled in Civil Engineering, Architecture and buildingconstructionmanagement programs and includes 5 educational modules, in this paper we describe the design, development and initial evaluation of the "Triangulations and Coordinates Calculations" module.

The paper discusses the location problem of production plants exemplified by concrete mix production plants (Ist model), taking into consideration the demand variability in time (IInd model), and the analytical method of the localization of industrial plant with a considerable amount of transportation costs of concrete mix and concrete aggregate (III rd model). Changes in demand for concrete mix in time t lead to changes in plants' location. Assuming that there exist concrete mix production plants, one should make a simulation of demand for concrete mix which occurs at the time t. The presented models are the essential generalisation of the problem discussed in the earlier papers. The matrix of construction costs must be always defined as a four-dimensions vector (the set of four values): the production plant construction cost, the cost of plant's modernisation (which is the result of changing demand for concrete mix), the cost of liquidation (dismantling) of a production plant or the cost of moving of an existing production plant. Three new generalised notions concerning the classical linear programming (mixed programming, mixed programming with time and two-optimised conjugate linear system) have been introduced. The algorithms describing the above-mentioned models of location changes were suggested, and programmes solving the location problems were prepared in PASCAL.

After two decades, data processing has finally, and probably forever, found its niche among civil engineering and construction (CEC) professionnals, through word processors, digitizing tables, management software, and increasingly via drawing software and computer-aided design (CAD), recently, robots have even started invading work sites. What are the main trends of CAD and robotics in the field of architecture and civil enginee ring? What type of R&D effort do university and industrial laboratories undertake to devise the professional software that will be on the market in the next three to five years? These are the issues which will be addressed during this symposium. To this effect, we have planned concurrently an equipment and software show, as well as a twofold conference. Robotic is just starting in the field of civil engineering and construction. A pioneer, the Civil Engineering Departement of Carnegie-Mellon University, in the United States, organized the first two international symposia, in 1984 and 1985 in Pittsburgh. This is the third meeting on the subject (this year, however, we have also included CAD). It constitutes the first large international symposium where CAD experts, specialists in architecture and CEC robotics will meet. From this standpoint, it should be an ideal forum for exchanging views and expe riences on a wide range of topics, and we hope it will give rise to novel applications and new syntheses. This symposium is intented for scientists, teachers, students and also for manufacturers and all CEC professionals.
