Conceptual problems in the body-space conceptualizations in A Cyborg Manifesto in the context of Sartori’s conceptual analysis

A Cyborg Manifesto, one of the key texts of posthumanist theory, is frequently referenced in research across various fields such as science, philosophy, art, and design. The authors of this study suggest that some research using A Cyborg Manifesto as a methodological tool to ensure scientific validity may encounter challenges due to the way certain concepts within the text are formulated. With this in mind, the study focuses on architectural research that engages with the manifesto, based on the idea that conceptual inconsistencies in a source may lead to limitations in establishing scientific validity. Accordingly, the research examines how concepts are constructed within the body-space conceptualizations in the manifesto, with the hypothesis that these concepts may not have been formulated accurately. Giovanni Sartori’s method of conceptual misformation is applied, analyzing a specific argument from the manifesto’s body-space conceptualizations where conceptual inconsistencies are identified. In this analysis, issues of conceptual stretching and conceptual confusion are observed. By emphasizing the importance of clear and consistent conceptual use in architectural research, this study aims to contribute to the broader discourse on scientific knowledge production. © 2025 The Author(s). This work discusses the use of digital cameras fitted with absorptionfilters as quasi-spectral radiometers. By filtering incidentlight into selected wavelength intervals, accurate estimatesof radiances can be made for unknown spectra. This approachis being employed as part of a new video-projection goniophotometerto study the properties of angularly and spectrally selectivecomplex fenestration systems. Complex fenestration systems areincreasingly being used to distribute solar radiation purposefullyin buildings. They can be utilized to optimize energy performanceand enhance daylighting. Radiance estimates from calibrateddigital cameras enable the assessment of quasi-spectral, bi-directionalscattering distribution functions of total radiance transmittedor reflected by a fenestration system over desired wavelengthintervals. A silicon and an indium gallium arsenide digitalcamera are used to enable measurements across a 380 to 1700nm wavelength interval.

Thermal and behavioral modeling of occupant-controlled heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems

Occupant-controlled heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. allow inhabitants of open-plan spaces some degree of control over their immediate microclimate. Typically, cooled air is supplied at floor or desktop levels. The amount and direction of air flow is under occupant control. Productivity increases have been attributed to this form of control. This paper proposes a simplified model of the thermal environment created by an occupant-controlled HVAC system and the behavior of the occupants within it. The thermal environment is characterized by individual nodes representing sub-areas of the conditioned space and a single well-mixed ceiling space above the occupied zone. Random processes are used to simulate the comings and goings of individual occupants and their HVAC control behavior. The model is used to identify the parameters which have the largest influence on the energy efficiency. Energy use of task HVAC with occupant sensors is found to be less than that of a conventional HVAC system by 13%. Individual HVAC control requires about 10% more energy than uniform temperature conditions.

Avian Influenza Infection and Antibodies Not Identified in Eastern Wild Turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) Sampled on the Delmarva Peninsula

Although highly pathogenic avian influenza presents a notable threat to domestic turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo domesticus), there have been minimal infections identified in wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) across the United States. Indeed, recent infections in wild turkeys have either been linked back to or suspected to be the result of spillback from nearby infected domestic turkeys. This study presents avian influenza sampling data for Eastern wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) across the Maryland portion of the Delmarva Peninsula, in the winter of 2023–2024, with an objective of identifying any circulating influenza A viruses (IAVs), as well as determining the extent of previous exposure to IAVs in this population. We collected swab samples from 36 female wild turkeys. No IAV viral RNA was detected in any sample, based on real-time reverse transcriptase PCR. We collected sera from 31 of the 36 sampled individuals, all of which had biomimetic enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (bELISA) S/N values >0.7 (range: 0.79–1.29) indicating a lack of antibodies to IAVs. Failure of rectangular masonry buttresses under concentrated loading

The stability of masonry vaulted structures relies upon the ability of buttresses to sustain the thrust exerted by arches and vaults. Nevertheless, the stability of buttresses has been the subject of limited studies to date. This paper extends a previous investigation on masonry buttresses under arch or vault loading, where the horizontal force leading to overturning failure accounting for fracturing of the buttress before collapse was computed. The previous analytical solution, obtained by treating masonry as a continuum with no tension resistance, is compared with predictions from discrete element analyses. The latter consider masonry as an assemblage of rigid blocks with no-tension frictional joints and are based on time-stepping integration of the equations of motion of the individual blocks. Results of laboratory tests on models are also presented and compared with the analytical predictions. Collapse criteria by sliding and material failure are established and the effect of buttress leaning is also accounted for.

Refurbishment work involves improvement, upgrading, renovation, retrofit, and repair of existing housing. With limited land usage and being aware of sustainability, the refurbishment market has faced increasing needs worldwide. During the long life cycle period of housing, most residents are undoubtedly faced with refurbishment requirements. However, it is not easy to make assessment and refurbishment related decisions due to the lack of knowledge and experience. This study presents Genetic algorithm-based on-line decision support system (DSS) to help residents easily conduct the housing condition assessment and offers optimal refurbishment actions considering the trade-off between cost and quality. Two refurbishment models are developed to explore the relationship among the life cycle cost, restoration cost and improved quality. The result reveals the proposed DSS solves the problems arising from asymmetric information and conflicting interests between residents and contractors, as well as improves traditional housing condition assessment to be more effective and efficient. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. The Weissenberg effect, or rod-climbing phenomenon, occurs in non-Newtonian fluids where the fluid interface ascends along a rotating rod. Despite its prominence, theoretical insights into this phenomenon remain limited. In earlier work, Joseph & Fosdick (Arch. Rat. Mech. Anal., vol. 49, 1973, pp. 321–380) employed domain perturbation methods for second-order fluids to determine the equilibrium interface height by expanding solutions based on the rotation speed. In this work, we investigate the time-dependent interface height through asymptotic analysis with dimensionless variables and equations using the Oldroyd-B model. We begin by neglecting surface tension and inertia to focus on the interaction between gravity and viscoelasticity. In the small-deformation scenario, the governing equations indicate the presence of a boundary layer in time, where the interface rises rapidly over a short time scale before gradually approaching a steady state. By employing a stretched time variable, we derive the transient velocity field and corresponding interface profile on this short time scale and recover the steady-state profile on a longer time scale. Subsequently, we reintroduce small but finite inertial effects to investigate their interplay with viscoelasticity and propose a criterion for determining the conditions under which rod-climbing occurs. © 2025, CC BY.

Housing refurbishment contractors selection based on a hybrid fuzzy-QFD approach

With low demand for new construction, limited land usage, and being aware of sustainability, the refurbishment market has grown greatly and has become more in demand in the construction industry. Most refurbishment work, however, involves a high level of risk, uncertainty, and coordination, which are likely to cause asymmetric information between contractors and residents in a refurbishment process. Most private refurbishment contractor selections are usually based on word-of-mouth referrals that lack a systematic and objective assessment method. This study proposes a hybrid approach combining fuzzy set theory and quality function deployment (QFD) to establish a housing refurbishment contractor selection model. With this model, residents can select an optimal refurbishment contractor according to requirements. To test the effectiveness of the proposed model, a known multiple criteria decision-making method, PROMETHEE, is applied to compare the results of contractor selections. The result reveals that the proposed hybrid fuzzy-QFD approach can be expected to be successful and has potential for handling multiple criteria decision-making problems. © 2008 Elsevier B.V.

Energy-conservation standards for new buildings will play a major rôle in federal and state conservation policies in the coming decade. This article discusses economic-efficiency considerations that can be incorporated into the selection and development of such standards. Three types of energy budgets — ‘fixed energy budgets’, ‘partially variable energy budgets’, and ‘economically efficient energy budgets’ (EEEB) — are examined for use as standards. Economic-efficiency criteria are presented for use in selecting an appropriate energy budget. An illustrative example shows the potential dollar losses in life-cycle terms from failing to apply an EEEB. Research and operational requirements for developing and implementing an energy budget are described. Three energy-budget standards are evaluated in terms of economic efficiency, administrative feasibility, equity, and consistency in design requirements. An EEEB appears optimal in that it ranks highest overall with respect to the four criteria. Failure to begin research for, and development of, EEEBs now would impose unnecessary social costs in the form of extra expenses to achieve any chosen target levels of energy conservation in buildings.

Food safety remains a critical concern, with bacterial contamination in beverages posing significant health risks due to rapid bacterial proliferation. Traditional bacterial detection methods, such as plate culture, require days of cultivation, while molecular and optical techniques demand complex pretreatment and specialized equipment, limiting their practicality for routine food inspection. To address these challenges, we developed a rapid, label-free bacterial detection method using a dielectrophoresis (DEP)-integrated 65-GHz inductor-capacitor (LC) oscillator array sensor chip. The sensor chip, fabricated using 65 nm CMOS technology, consists of 1488 sensor elements arranged in a zigzag pattern, each incorporating 5-μm DEP electrodes and a 50-μm LC oscillator. The set up allows for distributed bacterial collection and measurement. We evaluated the sensor's DEP collection patterns for Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, optimizing conditions for E. coli detection in various beverage matrices, including mineral water, green tea, and bovine milk. The method achieved detection limits of 1.3 × 10⁵ bacterial cells/mL in mineral water and green tea and 5.4 × 10⁶ cells/mL in bovine milk, with an enrichment rate reaching up to 20-fold. The entire detection process was completed within 30 min without the need for pretreatment, external analyzers, or temperature control. Overall, we demonstrated the utility of our simplified and cost-effective bacterial detection technique that enables efficient separation and enrichment of bacteria from food matrices. The sensor's compact design, reusability, and speed make it well-suited for on-site industrial food safety inspections, laying the groundwork for further improvements in real-world applications. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd
