In this paper, the development of an original and timeefficient measurement device is proposed for the detailed investigation of the daylight distribution within buildings. It is meant to be used for two kinds of applications: - to assess the sunlight distribution inside scale models in an automated way so as to serve as a design and educational tool for architects and students and help them find solutions to improve the sunlight distribution within their building projects. - to achieve time-efficient bidirectional goniophotometric measurements of materials, typically used for innovative fenestration systems such as solar blinds, advanced glazing or coatings and daylight-redirecting devices, as well as energy-efficient artificial lighting components like luminaires reflectors e.g. The functioning principle of the device in both configurations is explained here and its early stages of development are presented: design and construction of the mechanical platform, command interface prototype and characteristics of the light detection system.

This research examined design issues of creativity, mental synthesis, and drawing by conducting two experiments. These experiments compared and contrasted 3D designers, 2D designers, and Non-designers. The first experiment investigated if designers were more creative than non-designers when given creative mental synthesis tasks. We found they were. The second experiment investigated the relationship between drawing and creative mental synthesis. We found that how and when drawing is used is important. This has implications for design in that drawing and design representation appear to play a central role in the design thinking process.

Large Eddy Simulation (LES) with a Dynamic Subgrid-scale Model (DSM) is a powerful tool to predict natural convection in a room. However, the model needs to calculate the average of the model coefficient over a homogeneous direction. Since most natural convection flow in a room does not have a homogeneous direction, this study proposes a new Filtered Dynamic Subgrid-scale Model (FDSM) without the need of a homogeneous flow direction. Our calculation based on air velocity, air temperature and turbulence distributions agree reasonably well with the previous experimental data. The results show that the FDSM can be used to simulate natural convection in a room.

The establishment of guidelines by the United States Green building Council for Existing buildings provides the opportunity for Facility Managers to become leaders and champions in their organizations supporting sustainable maintenance and operations. This paper addresses the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Existing buildings (LEED EB) guidelines and their effective implementation into facility management procedures, setting the example for organizational understanding of green building initiatives and practices. As Managers of the built environment, facility managers have the opportunity to set the example to start their organizations on the path to more sustainable operations. When employees begin to understand concepts of energy savings, recycling and other green practices, they can easily expand these throughout the organization, making FM the leader in sustainability. A case study example of adoption of LEED-EB guidelines presents a suggested model for adoption in diverse global organizational settings.

Auditory distractions coming from workspace's surroundings have been shown to negatively impact the performance of knowledge workers on complex tasks. We theorize that an Adaptable Workspace (AW) can mitigate the negative impacts on performance. AW is a workspace that supports quick transformation of a workspace's micro-environment into open, partially-open, and closed environment as required by a knowledge worker at a given time. However, implementing AW can be costly and therefore a justification is needed for investments in AW. We present a mathematical model to evaluate the value of AW over static workspaces for knowledge organizations. The model variables are generated from an existing literature and further development of the model is proposed as a research study. The business objective of the model is to help decision-makers make informed decisions about the adoption of an AW over a static workspace. The intended clientele are facility decision-makers, architects, and knowledge workers.
