How medical crowdfunding helps people? A large-scale case study on waterdrop fundraising

While online medical crowdfunding achieved tremendous success, quantitative study about whether and how medical crowdfunding helps people remains little explored. In this paper, we empirically study how online medical crowdfunding helps people using more than 27, 000 fundraising cases in Waterdrop Fundraising, one of the most popular online medical crowdfunding platforms in China. We find that the amount of money obtained by fundraisers is broadly distributed, i.e., a majority of lowly donated cases coexist with a handful of very successful cases. We further investigate the factors that potentially correlate with the success of medical fundraising cases. Profile information of fundraising cases, e.g., geographic information of fundraisers, affects the donated amounts, since detailed description may increase the credibility of a fundraising case. One prominent finding lies in the effect of social network on the success of fundraising cases: the spread of fundraising information along social network is a key factor of fundraising success, and the social capital of fundraisers play an important role in fundraising. Finally, we conduct prediction of donations using machine learning models, verifying the effect of potential factors to the success of medical crowdfunding. Unsupervised machine learning applied to the study of phase transitions is an ongoing and interesting research direction. The active contour model, also called the snake model, was initially proposed for target contour extraction in two-dimensional images. In order to obtain a physical phase diagram, the snake model with an artificial neural network is applied in an unsupervised learning way by the authors of [***. 120, 176401(2018)]. It guesses the phase boundary as an initial snake and then drives the snake to convergence with forces estimated by the artificial neural network. In this paper, we extend this unsupervised learning method with one contour to a snake net with multiple contours for the purpose of obtaining several phase boundaries in a phase diagram. For the classical Blume-Capel model, the phase diagram containing three and four phases is obtained. Moreover, to overcome the limitations of the initial position and speed up the movement of the snake, the balloon force decaying with the iteration steps is introduced and applied to the snake net structure. Our method is helpful in determining the phase diagram with multiple phases, using just snapshots of configurations from cold atoms or other experiments without knowledge of the phases. We report an experimental demonstration of resonance fluorescence in a two-level superconducting artificial atom under two driving fields coupled to a detuned cavity. One of the fields is classical and the other is varied from quantum (vacuum fluctuations) to classical one by controlling the photon number inside the cavity. The device consists of a transmon qubit strongly coupled to a one-dimensional transmission line and a coplanar waveguide resonator. We observe a sideband anti-crossing and asymmetry in the emission spectra of the system through a one-dimensional transmission line, which is fundamentally different from the weak coupling case. By changing the photon number inside the cavity, the emission spectrum of our doubly driven system approaches to the case when the atom is driven by two classical bichromatic fields. We also measure the dynamical evolution of the system through the transmission line and study the properties of the first-order correlation function, Rabi oscillations and energy relaxation in the system. The study of resonance fluorescence from an atom driven by two fields promotes understanding decoherence in superconducting quantum circuits and may find applications in superconducting quantum computing and quantum networks. We consider algorithms with access to an unknown matrix M ∈ Fn×d via matrix-vector products, namely, the algorithm chooses vectors v1,..., vq, and observes Mv1,..., Mvq. Here the vi can be randomized as well as chosen adaptively as a function of Mv1,..., Mvi−1. Motivated by applications of sketching in distributed computation, linear algebra, and streaming models, as well as connections to areas such as communication complexity and property testing, we initiate the study of the number q of queries needed to solve various fundamental problems. We study problems in three broad categories, including linear algebra, statistics problems, and graph problems. For example, we consider the number of queries required to approximate the rank, trace, maximum eigenvalue, and norms of a matrix M;to compute the AND/OR/Parity of each column or row of M, to decide whether there are identical columns or rows in M or whether M is symmetric, diagonal, or unitary;or to compute whether a graph defined by M is connected or triangle-free. We also show separations for algorithms that are allowed to obtain matrix-vector products only by querying vectors on the right, versus algorithms that can query vectors on both the left and the right. We also show separations depending on the underlying field the matrix-vector product occurs in. For graph problems, we show separations depending on the form of the matrix (bipartite adjacency versus signed edge-vertex incidence matrix) to represent the graph. Surprisingly, this fundamental model does not appear to have been studied on its own, and we believe a thorough investigation of problems in this model would be beneficial to a number of different application areas. © Xiaoming Sun, David P. This paper defines a new visual reasoning paradigm by introducing an important factor, i.e. transformation. The motivation comes from the fact that most existing visual reasoning tasks, such as CLEVR in VQA, are solely defined to test how well the machine understands the concepts and relations within static settings, like one image. We argue that this kind of state driven visual reasoning approach has limitations in reflecting whether the machine has the ability to infer the dynamics between different states, which has been shown as important as state-level reasoning for human cognition in Piaget’s theory. To tackle this problem, we propose a novel transformation driven visual reasoning task. Given both the initial and final states, the target is to infer the corresponding single-step or multi-step transformation, represented as a triplet (object, attribute, value) or a sequence of triplets, respectively. Following this definition, a new dataset namely TRANCE is constructed on the basis of CLEVR, including three levels of settings, i.e. Basic (single-step transformation), Event (multi-step transformation), and View (multi-step transformation with variant views). Experimental results show that the state-of-the-art visual reasoning models perform well on Basic, but are still far from human-level intelligence on Event and View. We believe the proposed new paradigm will boost the development of machine visual reasoning. More advanced methods and real data need to be investigated in this direction. Match2: A Matching over Matching Model for Similar Question Identification

Community Question Answering (CQA) has become a primary means for people to acquire knowledge, where people are free to ask questions or submit answers. To enhance the efficiency of the service, similar question identification becomes a core task in CQA which aims to find a similar question from the archived repository whenever a new question is asked. However, it has long been a challenge to properly measure the similarity between two questions due to the inherent variation of natural language, i.e., there could be different ways to ask a same question or different questions sharing similar expressions. To alleviate this problem, it is natural to involve the existing answers for the enrichment of the archived questions. Traditional methods typically take a one-side usage, which leverages the answer as some expanded representation of the corresponding question. Unfortunately, this may introduce unexpected noises into the similarity computation since answers are often long and diverse, leading to inferior performance. In this work, we propose a two-side usage, which leverages the answer as a bridge of the two questions. The key idea is based on our observation that similar questions could be addressed by similar parts of the answer while different questions may not. In other words, we can compare the matching patterns of the two questions over the same answer to measure their similarity. In this way, we propose a novel matching over matching model, namely Match2, which compares the matching patterns between two question-answer pairs for similar question identification. Session-based recommendation becomes a research hotspot for its ability to make recommendations for anonymous users. However, existing session-based methods have the following limitations: (1) They either lack the capability to learn complex dependencies or focus mostly on the current session without explicitly considering collaborative information. (2) They assume that the representation of an item is static and fixed for all users at each time step. We argue that even the same item can be represented differently for different users at the same time step. To this end, we propose a novel solution, Collaborative Self-Attention network (CoSAN) for session-based recommendation, to learn the session representation and predict the intent of the current session by investigating neighborhood sessions. Specially, we first devise a collaborative item representation by aggregating the embedding of neighborhood sessions retrieved according to each item in the current session. Then, we apply self-attention to learn long-range dependencies between collaborative items and generate collaborative session representation. Finally, each session is represented by concatenating the collaborative session representation and the embedding of the current session. Through the fusion processing of target data obtained by radar, electronic reconnaissance, space reconnaissance, technical reconnaissance and civil cooperative system in early warning and surveillance system, multidimensional target data including explicit state information such as target attributes, type, position, speed and course could be obtained. The latent potential information, such as regular behavior, intention and threat degree, need to be mastered by human intelligence and experience analysis. It is urgent to use big data mining technology to realize intelligent analysis of target behavior. One of the critical challenges of object counting is the dramatic scale variations, which is introduced by arbitrary perspectives. We propose a reverse perspective network to solve the scale variations of input images, instead of generating perspective maps to smooth final outputs. The reverse perspective network explicitly evaluates the perspective distortions, and efficiently corrects the distortions by uniformly warping the input images. Then the proposed network delivers images with similar instance scales to the regressor. Thus the regression network doesn't need multi-scale receptive fields to match the various scales. Besides, to further solve the scale problem of more congested areas, we enhance the corresponding regions of ground-truth with the evaluation errors. Then we force the regressor to learn from the augmented ground-truth via an adversarial process. Furthermore, to verify the proposed model, we collected a vehicle counting dataset based on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The proposed dataset has fierce scale variations. Extensive experimental results on four benchmark datasets show the improvements of our method against the state-of-the-arts.
