In this paper, we will introduce our work in the 2019 TREC fair ranking task. In temporal academic search, more and more people choose to pay attention to the fairness constraints of ranking. The purpose of this task is to provide fairness exposure to different groups of authors, where the definition of group is diverse, such as based on demographics, height, topics, etc. For this reason, the model we design should consider the fairness of the ranking results while ensuring the relevance of the ranking results. We will show how to use our model to achieve the relevance of query results, then adjust the overall ranking results according to the fairness of documents, and finally achieve the relevance and fairness of document ordering. This paper will introduce the framework and methods of the fair ranking system, as well as the experimental results. © 2019 28th Text REtrieval Conference, TREC 2019 - Proceedings. Lovász Local Lemma (LLL) is a very powerful tool in combinatorics and probability theory to show the possibility of avoiding all "bad" events under some "weakly dependent" condition. Over the last decades, the algorithmic aspect of LLL has also attracted lots of attention in theoretical computer science. A tight criterion under which the abstract version LLL (ALLL) holds was given by Shearer. It turns out that Shearer’s bound is generally not tight for variable version LLL (VLLL). Recently, Ambainis et al. introduced a quantum version LLL (QLLL), which was then shown to be powerful for the quantum satisfiability problem. In this paper, we prove that Shearer’s bound is tight for QLLL, i.e., the relative dimension of the smallest satisfying subspace is completely characterized by the independent set polynomial, affirming a conjecture proposed by Sattath et al. Our result also shows the tightness of Gilyén and Sattath’s algorithm, and implies that the lattice gas partition function fully characterizes quantum satisfiability for almost all Hamiltonians with large enough qudits. Commuting LLL (CLLL), LLL for commuting local Hamiltonians which are widely studied in the literature, is also investigated here. We prove that the tight regions of CLLL and QLLL are different in general. This result might imply that it is possible to design an algorithm for CLLL which is still efficient beyond Shearer’s bound. In applications of LLLs, the symmetric cases are most common, i.e., the events are with the same probability and the Hamiltonians are with the same relative dimension. We give the first lower bound on the gap between the symmetric VLLL and Shearer’s bound. Our result can be viewed as a quantitative study on the separation between quantum and classical constraint satisfaction problems. Additionally, we obtain similar results for the symmetric CLLL. As an application, we give lower bounds on the critical thresholds of VLLL and CLLL for several of the most common lattices. ©

A Temporal Knowledge Graph (TKG) is a sequence of KGs with respective timestamps, which adopts quadruples in the form of (subject, relation, object, timestamp) to describe dynamic facts. TKG reasoning has facilitated many real-world applications via answering such queries as (query entity, query relation, ?, future timestamp) about future. This is actually a matching task between a query and candidate entities based on their historical structures, which reflect behavioral trends of the entities at different timestamps. In addition, recent KGs provide background knowledge of all the entities, which is also helpful for the matching. Thus, in this paper, we propose the Historical Structure Matching (HiSMatch) model. It applies two structure encoders to capture the semantic information contained in the historical structures of the query and candidate entities. Besides, it adopts another encoder to integrate the background knowledge into the model. TKG reasoning experiments on six benchmark datasets demonstrate the significant improvement of the proposed HiSMatch model, with up to 5.6% performance improvement in MRR, compared to the state-of-the-art baselines. © 2022 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Stance detection aims at inferring an author’s attitude towards a specific target in a text. Prior methods mainly consider target-related background information for a better understanding of targets while neglecting the accompanying input texts. In this study, we propose to prompt Large Language Models (LLMs) to explicitly extract the relationship between paired text and target as contextual knowledge. We then inject such LLM-driven knowledge into a generation model BART to exploit the rich contexts and semantics. Moreover, to further enhance the decoding capability of BART, a novel prototypical contrastive scheme is designed to align input contents with stance labels. Our experimental results demonstrate the state-of-the-art performance across several publicly available datasets, showcasing effectiveness in both zero-shot and cross-target stance detection scenarios. We publicly release our code to facilitate future research. © 2024 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Nested Event Extraction (NEE) aims to extract complex event structures where an event contains other events as its arguments recursively. Nested events involve a kind of Pivot Elements (PEs) that simultaneously act as arguments of outer-nest events and as triggers of inner-nest events, and thus connect them into nested structures. This special characteristic of PEs brings challenges to existing NEE methods, as they cannot well cope with the dual identities of PEs. Therefore, this paper proposes a new model, called PerNee, which extracts nested events mainly based on recognizing PEs. Specifically, PerNee first recognizes the triggers of both inner-nest and outer-nest events and further recognizes the PEs via classifying the relation type between trigger pairs. The model uses prompt learning to incorporate information from both event types and argument roles for better trigger and argument representations to improve NEE performance. Since existing NEE datasets (e.g., Genia11) are limited to specific domains and contain a narrow range of event types with nested structures, we systematically categorize nested events in the generic domain and construct a new NEE dataset, called ACE2005-Nest. Experimental results demonstrate that PerNee consistently achieves state-of-the-art performance on ACE2005-Nest, Genia11, and Genia13. Endowing a chatbot with a personality is essential to deliver more realistic conversations. Various persona-based dialogue models have been proposed to generate personalized and diverse responses by utilizing predefined persona information. However, generating personalized responses is still a challenging task since the leverage of predefined persona information is often insufficient. To alleviate this problem, we propose a novel Persona Enhanced Dual Alternating Learning network (PEDNet) aiming at producing more personalized responses in various open-domain conversation scenarios. PEDNet consists of a Context-Dominated network (CDNet) and a Persona-Dominated network (PDNet), which are built upon a common encoder-decoder backbone. CDNet learns to select a proper persona as well as ensure the contextual relevance of the predicted response, while PDNet learns to enhance the utilization of persona information when generating the response by weakening the disturbance of specific content in the conversation context. CDNet and PDNet are trained alternately using a multi-task training approach to equip PEDNet with the both capabilities they have learned. Both automatic and human evaluations on a newly released dialogue dataset Persona-chat demonstrate that our method could deliver more personalized responses than baseline methods. © 2020 COLING 2020 - 28th International Conference on Computational Linguistics, Proceedings of the Conference. Aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) aims to determine the sentiment polarity of each specific aspect in a given sentence. Existing researches have realized the importance of the aspect for the ABSA task and have derived many interactive learning methods that model context based on specific aspect. However, current interaction mechanisms are ill-equipped to learn complex sentences with multiple aspects, and these methods underestimate the representation learning of the aspect. In order to solve the two problems, we propose a mutual enhanced transformation network (METNet) for the ABSA task. First, the aspect enhancement module in METNet improves the representation learning of the aspect with contextual semantic features, which gives the aspect more abundant information. Second, METNet designs and implements a hierarchical structure, which enhances the representations of aspect and context iteratively. Experimental results on SemEval 2014 datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of METNet, and we further prove that METNet is outstanding in multi-aspect scenarios. © 2020 COLING 2020 - 28th International Conference on Computational Linguistics, Proceedings of the Conference. Previous studies have shown that semantically meaningful representations of words and text can be acquired through neural embedding models. In particular, paragraph vector (PV) models have shown impressive performance in some natural language processing tasks by estimating a document (topic) level language model. Integrating the PV models with traditional language model approaches to retrieval, however, produces unstable performance and limited improvements. In this paper, we formally discuss three intrinsic problems of the original PV model that restrict its performance in retrieval tasks. We also describe modifications to the model that make it more suitable for the IR task, and show their impact through experiments and case studies. The three issues we address are (1) the unregulated training process of PV is vulnerable to short document overfitting that produces length bias in the final retrieval model;(2) the corpus-based negative sampling of PV leads to a weighting scheme for words that overly suppresses the importance of frequent words;and (3) the lack of word-context information makes PV unable to capture word substitution relationships. © 2016 ACM.

Existing works in event extraction typically extract event arguments within the sentence scope. However, besides the sentence level, events may also be naturally presented at the document level. A document-level event usually reflects, to some extent, the theme (i.e., the main content) of the document (e.g., electronic medical records and news articles), which is thus referred to as the thematic event. Thematic Event Extraction (TEE) aims to extract the arguments of thematic events. TEE faces a major challenge, i.e., the sparsity and dispersion of arguments, which means that the arguments of a thematic event are dispersed in different sentences of the document. To overcome this challenge, we propose an Event-related Sentence Detection based TEE model, called ESDTEE, which first detects the sentences related to the thematic event and then extracts the arguments only within these detected sentences using existing models. Extensive experiments with comprehensive analyses demonstrate the effectiveness of ESDTEE. © 2023 IEEE.

Most studies on influence maximization focus on one-shot propagation, i.e., the influence is propagated from seed users only once following a probabilistic diffusion model and users' activation are determined via single cascade. In reality it is often the case that a user needs to be cumulatively impacted by receiving enough pieces of information propagated to her before she makes the final purchase decision. In this paper we model such cumulative activation as the following process: first multiple pieces of information are propagated independently in the social network following the classical independent cascade model, then the user will be activated(and adopt the product) if the cumulative pieces of information she received reaches her cumulative activation threshold. Two optimization problems are investigated under this framework: seed minimization with cumulative activation(SM-CA), which asks how to select a seed set with minimum size such that the number of cumulatively active nodes reaches a given requirement η; influence maximization with cumulative activation(IM-CA), which asks how to choose a seed set with fixed budget to maximize the number of cumulatively active nodes. For SM-CA problem, we design a greedy algorithm that yields a bicriteria O(ln n)-approximation when η = n, where n is the number of nodes in the network. For both SM-CA problem with η < n and IM-CA problem, we prove strong inapproximability results. Despite the hardness results, we propose two efficient heuristic algorithms for SM-CA and IM-CA respectively based on the reverse reachable set approach. Experimental results on different real-world social networks show that our algorithms significantly outperform baseline algorithms.
