In this paper, we propose a novel deep architecture with multiple classifiers for continuous sign language recognition. Representing the sign video with a 3D convolutional residual network and a bidirectional LSTM, we formulate continuous sign language recognition as a grammatical-rule-based classification problem. We first split a text sentence of sign language into isolated words and n-grams, where an n-gram is a sequence of consecutive n words in a sentence. Then, we propose a word-independent classifiers (WIC) module and an n-gram classifier (NGC) module to identify the words and n-grams in a sentence, respectively. A greedy decoding algorithm is employed to integrate words and n-grams into the sentence based on the confidence scores provided by both modules. Our method is evaluated on a Chinese continuous sign language recognition benchmark, and the experimental results demonstrate its effectiveness and superiority.

The Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) enables bitrate adaptation through different representations of the same content. It is common to encode random access point (RAP) pictures at segment boundaries to support representation switching. As an open group of pictures (GOP) results into a temporary discontinuity of the video playback due to the inability to decode some pictures when switching representations, closed GOP prediction structures are normally used in DASH. This paper proposes two similar methods for using the open GOP prediction structure in DASH representations while a full picture rate is maintained also during representation switching. The first method is enabled with straightforward changes in the decoding of the High Efficiency Video Coding (H.265/HEVC) standard, whereas the second method utilizes the adaptive resolution change feature of the scalable (SHVC) extension of H.265/HEVC. Experiments show that the proposed methods outperform the use of closed GOPs by 5.6% on average in terms of Bjontegaard delta bitrate (BD-rate).

In all of the existing block-based image and video coding standards, blocks are processed in the fixed scan order. Then in HEVC intra coding, intra prediction is always based on the top and/or left neighboring reconstructed pixels, which incurs less accurate prediction for blocks where the spatial correlation is not along the topleft-to-bottomright direction. To obtain better intra prediction, we propose to flexibly determine the coding order of blocks in HEVC intra coding. Complying with the hierarchical quadtree structure in HEVC, our flexible block ordering (FBO) technique recursively decides the coding order of four sub-blocks when splitting one block. Moreover, we propose new methods to perform inter/extrapolation for intra prediction so as to fully utilize neighboring reconstructed pixels, not always being top/left. Experimental results show that our proposed FBO technique achieves on average 2.9% BD-rate reduction compared to HEVC baseline.

Motion estimation and motion compensation are fundamental in video coding to remove the temporal redundancy between video frames. The current video coding schemes usually adopt block-based motion estimation and compensation using simple translational or affine motion models, which cannot efficiently characterize complex motions in natural video signal. In this paper, we propose a frame extrapolation method for motion estimation and compensation. Specifically, based on the several previous frames, our method directly extrapolates the current frame using a trained deep network model. The deep network we adopted is a redesigned Video Coding oriented LAplacian Pyramid of Generative Adversarial Networks (VC-LAPGAN). The extrapolated frame is then used as an additional reference frame. Experimental results show that the VC-LAPGAN is capable in estimating and compensating for complex motions, and extrapolating frames with high visual quality. Using the VC-LAPGAN, our method achieves on average 2.0% BD-rate reduction than High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) under low-delay P configuration.

For current learned image compression methods, padding input images is necessary to meet the resolution requirements of down-sampling layers. However, the impact of padding has not been studied thoroughly. Most previous studies ignore padded images in the training process. In this paper, we analyze the impact of padding on compression performance. Then, we propose a padding-aware training (PAT) strategy, handling the padding effect during the training. Specifically, our PAT strategy calculates the loss of pre-padding image through a masking operation. Finally, according to our systematic experimental results, we find that images with different resolutions tend to favor different padding modes. Therefore, we further propose to conduct padding mode decision in the encoding process for rate-distortion optimization. Experiments demonstrate that our proposed PAT strategy and padding mode decision effectively compensate for the performance drop caused by padding.

Light field, as a new data representation format in multimedia, has the ability to capture both intensity and direction of light rays. However, the additional angular information also brings a large volume of data. Classical coding methods are not effective to describe the relationship between different views, leading to redundancy left. To address this problem, we propose a novel light field compression scheme based on implicit neural representation to reduce redundancies between views. We store the information of a light field image implicitly in an neural network and adopt model compression methods to further compress the implicit representation. Extensive experiments have demonstrated the effectiveness of our proposed method, which achieves comparable rate-distortion performance as well as superior perceptual quality over traditional methods.

In the era of cloud computing, there are many correlated images in the cloud, joint compression of these images may provide much higher compression ratio than individual coding. Model-based coding is an appealing approach to image coding in the cloud, as it removes knowledge redundancy among images that share the same model. In this paper, we make an attempt to model-based image coding for landmark images, where our model consists of three-dimensional (3-D) point-cloud plus image patches to describe the geometry and surface color of the landmark respectively. The camera parameters of an input image are estimated based on the 3-D point-cloud and the patches in the model, and then prediction image is generated by selecting, warping, and stitching image patches as well as illuminance compensation, the residue between original and prediction images is compressed by P-frame coding in HEVC encoder. We perform experiments on an Internet photo collection to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. Preliminary results display the superior performance of our scheme that achieves as high as 39.9% bits saving compared to HEVC intra on a single image. The proposed scheme indicates a promising approach to image coding in the cloud and is worthy of in-depth investigation.

Semantic segmentation is a fundamental task in indoor scene understanding. Most previous supervised approaches rely on densely annotated image data sets. Due to the limited amount of images with segmentation labels, the performance of existing networks is greatly limited. In this paper, we exploit temporal correlation in video frames to improve the performance and robustness of segmentation networks. Two effective learning strategies are proposed to propagate the information from a few labeled frames to their immediate neighbor frames. First, we scale up training dataset for supervised semantic segmentation networks by generating pseudo ground-truth for neighboring frames from a labeled frame using filtered homography transformation. Furthermore, we introduce a self-supervised loss function to ensure temporal consistency between the segmentation results of adjacent frames. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art techniques for semantic segmentation on NYU-Depth V2 dataset.

Recently, numerous salient object detection methods are proposed for different data types. And a reliable method, which can accurately extract complete salient objects, is beneficial to various vision tasks. However, existing methods may fail in highlighting the entire salient object uniformly. In this work, we propose a simple and universal framework aiming to improve the detection result of existing methods. To remove inaccurate salient regions, we apply location prior and adaptive de-noising to prior saliency maps extracted from existing methods in the pre-processing step. Then, an iteration optimization algorithm considering local smoothness and global similarity is introduced to refine the pre-processed saliency map. The experimental results show that the proposed framework can universally enhance the performance of state-of-the-art salient object detection methods for 2D, 3D and light field data.
