In distributed systems, the server placement problem in which a new server has to compete with existing servers for user requests is important in planning of constructing new business service sites. In addition to minimizing cost, competition-aware server placement also needs to maximize the benefit of building a new server. This paper proposes a Tabu Search approach to optimize the problem in general graphs. Results from the simulation experiments show that it do has a better performance than both of the Greedy Add and Greedy Remove algorithms.

MicroRNAs can regulate hundreds of target genes and play a pivotal role in a broad range of biological process. However, relatively little is known about how these highly connected miRNAs-target networks are remodelled in the context of various diseases. Here we examine the dynamic alteration of context-specific miRNA regulation to determine whether modified microRNAs regulation on specific biological processes is a useful information source for predicting cancer prognosis. A new concept, Context-specific miRNA activity (CoMi activity) is introduced to describe the statistical difference between the expression level of a miRNA's target genes and non-targets genes within a given gene set (context).

This paper addresses the problem of Ranking Internet service quality by taking a machine learning approach using multiple service features. Ranking helps find good services for applications that use services as building blocks. Unlike other ranking problems, the goodness of Internet service qualities is dependent upon multiple key features. The key features vary across different service categories and have unequally discriminative natures. This paper divides the ranking problem into four subtasks including categorizing services according to the service functionalities, identifying key features that determine the quality, denoising for feature measurement values and computing global ranking scores with multiple key features, which are cast into machine learning problems and solved using techniques classification, feature selection, clustering, and regression respectively. In particular, we propose in this paper an efficient dense-block based denoising method for subjective features, and a Supported Vector Regression based method for computing global ranking scores. Experimental results on both synthetic and real data show that the proposed approach can quantitatively identify the key features across service categories, discard noisy measurement values in 10 times faster, and compute the global ranking scores using multiple features with low mean squared errors for both linear and nonlinear ranking functions. © 2010 IEEE.

Based on FP-tree algorithm, this article introduced the method of multi-thread processing and a Multi-Threaded Paralleled frequent item-set mining Algorithm - MTPA was proposed .It has been applied to an enterprise human resources management system. Through the experiments of paralleled mining by using increasing multi-thread processing, it has been proved that MTPA which on the condition of multi-core processors can improve the efficiency of frequent item-set mining effectively. ©2010 IEEE.

Influenza virus is the causative agent of the seasonal and occasional pandemic *** current H1N1 influenza pandemic,announced by the WHO in June 2009,is highly contagious and responsible for global economic losses and *** the H1N1 gene segments have three origins in terms of host species,the virus has been named swine-origin influenza virus(S-OIV)due to a predominant swine origin.2009 S-OIV has been shown to highly resemble the 1918 pandemic virus in many *** is responsible for the host range and receptor binding of the virus and is therefore a primary indicator for the potential of *** sequence analysis of the 2009 S-OIV hemagglutinin(HA)reveals its closest relationship to that of the 1918 pandemic influenza virus,however,analysis at the structural level is necessary to critically assess the functional *** this report,we report the crystal structure of soluble hemagglutinin H1(09H1)at 2.9Å,illustrating that the 09H1 is very similar to the 1918 pandemic HA(18H1)in overall structure and the structural modules,including the five defined antiboby(Ab)-binding *** results provide an explanation as to why sera from the survivors of the 1918 pandemics can neutralize the 2009 S-OIV,and people born around the 1918 are resistant to the current pandemic,yet younger generations are more susceptible to the 2009 pandemic.

As the streaming media files growing larger and larger in size, it inevitably aggravates the network congestion and user perceive latency, to settle problem lots of caching algorithms have been applied in video-on-demand (VOD)system. However, different algorithm is correspondence to an unique caching replacement policy, which limits its applications and the effects are not very satisfied, so in VOD aspect it is necessary to find a common replacement algorithm. In this paper, we propose a Common Caching Replacement Algorithm (CCRA). As a unification replacement algorithm, it sufficiently considers the recent visit and segment size, effectively solves the disk I/O bandwidth bottleneck limitation and improves byte hit rate. We respectively replace the previous caching replacement policy in Uniform segmentation algorithm and Exponential segmentation algorithm with CCRA. From the experimental comparison, Uniform segmentation with CCRA improves almost 5\% in disk reduce ratio, and exponential segmentation with CCRA increases near 8\% in byte hit ratio.

Due to the decoding dependency of MPEG coded frames, lots of dependent frames are transmitted at video cassette recording (VCR) operations, thus more computation resource, hard disk and network bandwidth are consumed on streaming media server, and higher decoding complexity on Set-Top Box (STB). To tackle this problem, our scheme of supporting VCR functionalities with adaptive rate adjustment in streaming media server is proposed. The scheme includes a general VCR functionalities supporting method called GVFR which selects frames based on Group of Pictures (GOP) and uses Variable Frame Rate (VFR). Selecting frames based on GOP can efficiently eliminate the transmission of dependent frames, and the realization of VFR leads to optional transmission rate. Then an intelligent decision mode is introduced which automatically picks the appropriate GVFR strategies with suitable transmission rate based on the congestion status of the link. The experimental results demonstrate that GVFR can greatly decrease the transmission rate of fast forward/backward, to 22% of that of normal playback at least, and by varying GVFR strategies, VCR with optional transmission rate is achieved.

Numerous studies have reported that the timeseries terrestrial parameters such as the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Leaf Area of Index (LAI), Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetic Active Radiation (FPAR), derived from NOAA/AVHRR, SPOT/VEGETATION, TERRA or AQUA/MODIS, have played significant roles in researching the global environment, terrestrial ecosystems and related ecological researches. However, the remotely sensed signals are interfered severely by atmospheric conditions especially clouds and such noises exists in the time-series products as well. Therefore, to obtain a high quality time-series of terrestrial parameter is a necessary step before further studies. At present several methods have been applied to reduce the noise to construct a fine time-series of NDVI, but few studies concerning the other key terrestrial parameters, such as LAI, FPAR etc. In this paper, after comparing general methods in literatures, we designed a new method based on the Savitzky-Golay filter, which was applied to improve the quality of MODIS 8-Day LAI/FPAR Product to generate timeseries of LAI and FPAR with high quality. Our validation results indicate that more smooth and realistic time-series curves of LAI/FPAR can be obtained by using this new method, which exemplify the dynamic change of forests, crop or plants and key input parameters in modeling the complex land surface processing. ©2009 IEEE.
