Medical diagnosing systems contain sensitive information, especially the resulting certificate of diagnosis that involves the patient’s privacy, required to be protected carefully. An effective way is to secretly embed privacy-sensitive information into medical-generated images, eventually being viewed as arbitrary images of nobody/nothing in public. The current research line of medical steganography targets simple data-hiding methods, yet remains barren in optimal embedding and stronger robustness. To fill this gap, we propose an end-to-end steganographic framework for medical images. Our idea is to integrate medical-image adaptive steganography with a generative adversarial network (GAN), named MedSteGAN. To improve both robustness, we design an optimized U-shape gen- erator that extracts features more efficiently utilizing larger kernel convolutions and the ReLU6 function. Also, deconvolutions are replaced by upsampling and convolution layers to avoid the checkerboard effect. To enhance security and image quality, we employ visual quality loss and mean squared error (MSE) loss based on the multi-scale structural similarity index metric (MS- SSIM) and the high-pass filters, respectively. Extensive experiments demonstrate that MedSteGAN outperforms state-of-the-art steganographic schemes in terms of robustness and image quality. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A survey on few-shot class-incremental learning

Large deep learning models are impressive, but they struggle when real-time data is not available. Few-shot class-incremental learning (FSCIL) poses a significant challenge for deep neural networks to learn new tasks from just a few labeled samples without forgetting the previously learned ones. This setup can easily leads to catastrophic forgetting and overfitting problems, severely affecting model performance. Studying FSCIL helps overcome deep learning model limitations on data volume and acquisition time, while improving practicality and adaptability of machine learning models. This paper provides a comprehensive survey on FSCIL. Unlike previous surveys, we aim to synthesize few-shot learning and incremental learning, focusing on introducing FSCIL from two perspectives, while reviewing over 30 theoretical research studies and more than 20 applied research studies. From the theoretical perspective, we provide a novel categorization approach that divides the field into five subcategories, including traditional machine learning methods, meta learning-based methods, feature and feature space-based methods, replay-based methods, and dynamic network structure-based methods. We also evaluate the performance of recent theoretical research on benchmark datasets of FSCIL. From the application perspective, FSCIL has achieved impressive achievements in various fields of computer vision such as image classification, object detection, and image segmentation, as well as in natural language processing and graph. We summarize the important applications. Finally, we point out potential future research directions, including applications, problem setups, and theory development. Overall, this paper offers a comprehensive analysis of the latest advances in FSCIL from a methodological, performance, and application perspective. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. One of the main challenges of quantum many-body physics is the exponential growth in the dimensionality of the Hilbert space with system size. This growth makes solving the Schrödinger equation of the system extremely difficult. Nonetheless, many physical systems have a simplified internal structure that typically makes the parameters needed to characterize their ground states exponentially smaller. Many numerical methods then become available to capture the physics of the system. Among modern numerical techniques, neural networks, which show great power in approximating functions and extracting features of big data, are now attracting much interest. In this work, we briefly review the progress in using artificial neural networks to build quantum many-body states. We take the Boltzmann machine representation as a prototypical example to illustrate various aspects of the states of a neural network. We briefly review also the classical neural networks and illustrate how to use neural networks to represent quantum states and density operators. Some physical properties of the neural network states are discussed. For applications, we briefly review the progress in many-body calculations based on neural network states, the neural network state approach to tomography, and the classical simulation of quantum computing based on Boltzmann machine states. Investigating EEG-Based Functional Connectivity Patterns for Multimodal Emotion Recognition

Compared with the rich studies on the motor brain-computer interface (BCI), the recently emerging affective BCI presents distinct challenges since the brain functional connectivity networks involving emotion are not well investigated. Previous studies on emotion recognition based on electroencephalography (EEG) signals mainly rely on single-channel-based feature extraction methods. In this paper, we propose a novel emotion-relevant critical subnetwork selection algorithm and investigate three EEG functional connectivity network features: strength, clustering coefficient, and eigenvector centrality. The discrimination ability of the EEG connectivity features in emotion recognition is evaluated on three public emotion EEG datasets: SEED, SEED-V, and DEAP. The strength feature achieves the best classification performance and outperforms the state-of-the-art differential entropy feature based on single-channel analysis for the EEG signals. The experimental results reveal that distinct functional connectivity patterns are exhibited for the five emotions of disgust, fear, sadness, happiness, and neutrality. Furthermore, we construct a multimodal emotion recognition model by combining the functional connectivity features from EEG and the features from eye movements or physiological signals using deep canonical correlation analysis. The classification accuracies of multimodal emotion recognition are 95.08 ± 6.42% on the SEED dataset, 84.51 ± 5.11% on the SEED-V dataset, and 85.34 ± 2.90% and 86.61 ± 3.76% for arousal and valence on the DEAP dataset, respectively. The results demonstrate the complementary representation properties of the EEG functional connectivity network features with eye movement data. In addition, we find that the brain networks constructed with fewer channels, i.e., 18 channels, achieve comparable performance with that of the 62-channel network with respect to multimodal emotion recognition and enable easier setups for BCI systems in real scenarios. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have gained considerable attention as a platform for establishing aerial wireless networks and communications. However, the line-of-sight dominance in air-to-ground communications often leads to significant interference with terrestrial networks, reducing communication efficiency among terrestrial terminals. This paper explores a novel uplink interference mitigation approach based on the collaborative beamforming (CB) method in multi-UAV network systems. Specifically, the UAV swarm forms a UAV-enabled virtual antenna array (VAA) to achieve the transmissions of gathered data to multiple base stations (BSs) for data backup and distributed processing. However, there is a trade-off between the effectiveness of CB-based interference mitigation and the energy conservation of UAVs. Thus, by jointly optimizing the excitation current weights and hover position of UAVs as well as the sequence of data transmission to various BSs, we formulate an uplink interference mitigation multi-objective optimization problem (MOOP) to decrease interference affection, enhance transmission efficiency, and improve energy efficiency, simultaneously. In response to the computational demands of the formulated problem, we introduce an evolutionary computation method, namely chaotic non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (CNSGA-II) with multiple improved operators. The proposed CNSGA-II efficiently addresses the formulated MOOP, outperforming several other comparative algorithms, as evidenced by the outcomes of the simulations. Moreover, the proposed CB-based uplink interference mitigation approach can significantly reduce the interference caused by UAVs to non-receiving BSs. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Nuclei classification provides valuable information for histopathology image analysis. However, the large variations in the appearance of different nuclei types cause difficulties in identifying nuclei. Most neural network based methods are affected by the local receptive field of convolutions, and pay less attention to the spatial distribution of nuclei or the irregular contour shape of a nucleus. In this paper, we first propose a novel polygon-structure feature learning mechanism that transforms a nucleus contour into a sequence of points sampled in order, and employ a recurrent neural network that aggregates the sequential change in distance between key points to obtain learnable shape features. Next, we convert a histopathology image into a graph structure with nuclei as nodes, and build a graph neural network to embed the spatial distribution of nuclei into their representations. To capture the correlations between the categories of nuclei and their surrounding tissue patterns, we further introduce edge features that are defined as the background textures between adjacent nuclei. Lastly, we integrate both polygon and graph structure learning mechanisms into a whole framework that can extract intra and inter-nucleus structural characteristics for nuclei classification. Correlation and scaling behaviors of PM2:5 concentration in China

Air pollution has become a major issue and caused widespread environmental and health problems. Aerosols or particulate matters are an important component of the atmosphere and can transport under complex meteorological conditions. Based on the data of PM2:5 observations, we develop a network approach to study and quantify their spreading and diffusion patterns. We calculate cross-correlation functions of time lag between sites within different season. The probability distribution of correlation changes with season. It is found that the probability distributions in four seasons can be scaled into one scaling function with averages and standard deviations of correlation. This seasonal scaling behavior indicates there is the same mechanism behind correlations of PM2:5 concentration in different seasons. Further, from weighted and directional degrees of complex network, different properties of PM2:5 concentration are studied. The weighted degrees reveal the strongest correlations of PM2:5 concentration in winter and in the North China plain. These directional degrees show net inuences of PM2:5 along Gobi and inner Mongolia, the North China plain, Central China, and Yangtze River Delta. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Nanoscale L12-type ordered structures are widely used in face-centred cubic (FCC) alloys to exploit their hardening capacity and thereby improve mechanical properties. These fine-scale particles are typically fully coherent with matrix with the same atomic configuration disregarding chemical species, which makes them challenging to be characterized. Spatial distribution maps (SDMs) are used to probe local order by interrogating the three-dimensional (3D) distribution of atoms within reconstructed atom probe tomography (APT) data. However, it is almost impossible to manually analyse the complete point cloud (>10 million) in search for the partial crystallographic information retained within the data. Here, we proposed an intelligent L12-ordered structure recognition method based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The SDMs of a simulated L12-ordered structure and the FCC matrix were firstly generated. These simulated images combined with a small amount of experimental data were used to train a CNN-based L12-ordered structure recognition model. Finally, the approach was successfully applied to reveal the 3D distribution of L12–type d¢–Al3(LiMg) nanoparticles with an average radius of 2.54 nm in a FCC Al-Li-Mg system. The minimum radius of detectable nanodomain is even down to 5 Å. The proposed CNN-APT method is promising to be extended to recognize other nanoscale ordered structures and even more-challenging short-range ordered phenomena in the near future. Cluster analysis is important in scientific and industrial fields. In this study, we proposed a novel chaotic biogeography-based optimization (CBBO) method, and applied it in centroid-based clustering methods. The results over three types of simulation data showed that this proposed CBBO method gave better performance than chaotic particle swarm optimization, genetic algorithm, firefly algorithm, and quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization. In all, our CBBO method is effective in centroid-based clustering.

Local feature detection and description play an important role in many computer vision tasks, which are designed to detect and describe keypoints in any scene and any downstream task. data-driven local feature learning methods need to rely on pixel-level correspondence for training. However, a vast number of existing approaches ignored the semantic information on which humans rely to describe image pixels. In addition, it is not feasible to enhance generic scene keypoints detection and description simply by using traditional common semantic segmentation models because they can only recognize a limited number of coarse-grained object classes. In this paper, we propose SAMFeat to introduce SAM (segment anything model), a foundation model trained on 11 million images, as a teacher to guide local feature learning. SAMFeat learns additional semantic information brought by SAM and thus is inspired by higher performance even with limited training samples. To do so, first, we construct an auxiliary task of Attention-weighted Semantic Relation Distillation (ASRD), which adaptively distillates feature relations with category-agnostic semantic information learned by the SAM encoder into a local feature learning network, to improve local feature description using semantic discrimination. Second, we develop a technique called Weakly Supervised Contrastive Learning Based on Semantic Grouping (WSC), which utilizes semantic groupings derived from SAM as weakly supervised signals, to optimize the metric space of local descriptors. Third, we design an Edge Attention Guidance (EAG) to further improve the accuracy of local feature detection and description by prompting the network to pay more attention to the edge region guided by SAM. SAMFeat’s performance on various tasks such as image matching on HPatches, and long-term visual localization on Aachen Day-Night showcases its superiority over previous local features.
