Social sensing enhanced time estimation for bus service

The precise prediction of bus routes or the arrival time of buses for a traveler can enhance the quality of bus service. However, many social factors influence people's preferences for taking buses. These social factors may include heavy traffic cost, traffic congestion, poor air quality and so forth. Existing prediction techniques rarely consider social sensing when predicting the bus arrival time. Accordingly, this paper proposes a social sensing enhanced service for predicting bus routes, which integrates sensing ability and social networks to understand and measure the influence between social events and vehicle velocity. We focus on the analysis of two different attributions: PT service quality attributions PEA s and road condition attributions PRCA s. Both of them synthesize the social sensing in their evaluation of bus routes. PEA represents individual preferences and PRCA represents physical factors that significantly influence vehicle velocity. Bus relevant social events were further categorized into PEA events or PRCA events. PEA s of buses were scored according to the tendency of bus conditions reflected in social events. Furthermore, an artificial neural network prediction model is established to estimate the bus travel time. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

With the explosion of the amount of data, analytics applications require much higher performance and scalability. However, traditional DBMS encounters the tough obstacle of scalability, and could not handle big data easily. In the meantime, due to the complex relational data model, the large amount of historical data and the independent demand of subsystems, it is not suitable to use either shared-nothing MPP architecture (e.g. Hadoop) or existing hybrid architecture (e.g. HadoopDB) to replace completely. In this paper, considering the feasibility and versatility of building a hybrid system, we propose a novel prototype H-DB which takes DBMSs as the underlying storage and execution units, and Hadoop as an index layer and a cache. H-DB not only retains the analytical DBMS, but also could handle the demands of rapidly exploding data applications. The experiments show that H-DB meets the demand, outperforms original system and would be appropriate for analogous big data applications. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2013.

Visible light face images usually have a high resolution;however, the performance of face recognition using visible light face images is usually affected by the varying illumination. It seems that near infrared face recognition might be little influenced by the varying illumination, whereas near infrared face images usually have a low resolution and some facial marks such as scars and moles cannot be reflected by the image. In this paper, we develop a low-cost bimodal face recognition system. The system first captures the visible light and near infrared images of the face and then integrates them for face recognition. The paper also proposes a score level fusion method to combine visible light and near infrared face images for face identification. The experimental results show that the proposed method performs very well in bimodal face recognition. Moreover, the paper provides a true bimodal face image database, in which the visible light and near infrared face images are captured simultaneously. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) based methods achieve great success for pose alignment. However, CCA has limitations as a linear and global algorithm. Although some variants have been proposed to overcome the limitations, neither of them achieves locality and nonlinearity at the same time. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm called Instance-Specific Canonical Correlation Analysis (ISCCA), which approximates the nonlinear data by computing the instance specific projections along the smooth curve of the manifold. Based on the framework of least squares regression, CCA is extended to the instance-specific case which obtains a set of locally-linear smooth but globally-nonlinear transformations. The optimization problem is proved to be convex and could be solved efficiently by alternating optimization. And the globally optimal solutions could be achieved with theoretical guarantee. Experimental results for pose alignment demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.

NAND Flash memories have rapidly emerged as a storage class memory such as SSD (Solid State Disk), CF (Compact Flash) Card, SD (Secure Digital Memory) Card. Due to its distinct operation mechanisms, NAND Flash memory suffers from erase/program endurance, data retention and program/read disturbance problems. Specifically, erase and program operation keeps in developing bad blocks during the lifetime of memory chips. Bad blocks are blocks that contain faulty bits but the ECC (Error Correction Code) algorithm cannot correct them. Although wear leveling tries to balance the erase/program operations on different blocks so that all blocks can wear out at a similar pace, new bad blocks still inevitably *** propose an in-field testing technique which takes some pages in a block as predictors. Due to wear out faster than the other pages, the predictors will become bad before the other pages in the block become bad. The further questions are (1) how to detect those wearing fast pages so as to use them as predictors, (2) how many predictors are needed to achieve a satisfactory prediction accuracy, (3) misprediction will result in what negative impact on performance and endurance.

Currently, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are applied to routine inspection tasks of electric distribution networks. As an important information source, machine vision attracts much attention in the area of the UAV's autonomous control. To this end, real-time algorithms are studied-in this paper to detect the power lines in the UAV video images. First, video images are converted into binary images through an adaptive thresholding approach. Then, Hough Transform is used to detect line candidates in the binary images. Finally, a fuzzy C- means (FCM) clustering algorithm is used to discriminate the power lines from the detected line candidates. The properties of power lines are used to remove the spurious lines, and the length and slope of the detected lines are used as features to establish the clustering data set. Experimental results show that the algorithms proposed are effective and able to tolerate noises from complicated terrain background and various illuminations.

Cloud computing focuses on supporting high scalable and high available parallel and distributed computing, based on the infrastructure built on top of large scale clusters which contain a large number of cheap PC servers, to process the huge amounts of data generated by Internet. As the core of cloud computing, Google's MapReduce programming model and Google File System (GFS) provide such computing power. Granular computing (GrC) is an objective world outlook and methodology. From the point of GrC, this paper surveys the Google's MapReduce programming model, analyses how to express its process of data granulation and computing more accurately and more strictly during the parallel and distributed computing. © 2011 IEEE.

In distributed systems, the server placement problem in which a new server has to compete with existing servers for user requests is important in planning of constructing new business service sites. In addition to minimizing cost, competition-aware server placement also needs to maximize the benefit of building a new server. This paper proposes a Tabu Search approach to optimize the problem in general graphs. Results from the simulation experiments show that it do has a better performance than both of the Greedy Add and Greedy Remove algorithms.
