Approximate Nearest Neighbour (ANN) search is an important research topic in multimedia and computer vision fields. In this paper, we propose a new deep supervised quantization method by Self-Organizing Map (SOM) to address this problem. Our method integrates the Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Self-Organizing Map into a unified deep architecture. The overall training objective includes supervised quantization loss and classification loss. With the supervised quantization loss, we minimize the differences on the maps between similar image pairs, and maximize the differences on the maps between dissimilar image pairs. By optimization, the deep architecture can simultaneously extract deep features and quantize the features into the suitable nodes in the Self-Organizing Map. The experiments on several public standard datasets prove the superiority of our approach over the existing ANN search methods. Besides, as a byproduct, our deep architecture can be directly applied to classification task and visualization with little modification, and promising performances are demonstrated on these tasks in the experiments. © 2017 ACM.

We present an interactive example-based system for non-expert users to generate 3D indoor scenes intuitively. From a set of examples of an interior scene, we extract furniture layout constraints including pairwise and group relationships, ergonomic factors and user habits. Instead of inserting a single furniture object to a visual pleasing and functional position independently, we take advantages of manipulating a group of functionality-related furniture objects for smart editing. To deal with the arrangement problem which requires jointly optimizing a variety of functional and visual criteria, we introduce an efficient two-step pipeline consisting of rough arrangement and layout refinement. In the rough arrangement step, furniture objects are roughly placed according to pairwise relationships for accelerating the further optimization process. In the layout refinement step, we optimize the rough furniture layout to a semantical and functional layout considering spatial relationships, and ergonomic factors and avoiding collisions. User interactions are also allowed to move a specific object or a structural group while our system automatically refines the entire layout. The experimental results demonstrate that our system for scene generation measurably increases the visual quality and time efficiency compared with the completely manual scene editing or modeling. © 2017 ACM.

Object detection has been playing a significant role in the field of remote sensing for a long time but it is still full of challenges. In this paper, we propose a novel detection framework based on rotational region convolution neural network to cope with the problem of non-maximum suppression in dense objects detection. The bounding boxes obtained by adopting our method is the minimum bounding rectangle of object with less redundant regions. Furthermore, we find the head direction of the object through prediction. There are three important changes to our framework over traditional detection methods, representation and regression of rotational bounding box, head direction prediction and rotational non-maximal suppression. Experiments based on remote sensing images from Google Earth for Object detection show that our detection method based on rotational region CNN has a competitive performance.

In this paper, a relaxation labelling based land masking method is proposed for separating sea and land in SAR images. Land masking, also known as sea-land segmentation, is a part of ship detection system for SAR images to avoid detecting false alarms in the land. Relaxation labeling is an iterative method, which can separate foreground pixels from background ones using the neighborhood information of pixels in the image. When relaxation labelling converges, the segmented result is often unsatisfactory, since it tends to label more foreground pixels. To overcome this issue, a loss composed of the background probability distribution diversity and the gradient magnitude of the result is introduced to indicate when to stop the iteration. Experimental results on several Gaofen-3 SAR images demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Single image super-resolution is an effective way to enhance the spatial resolution of remote sensing image, which is crucial for many applications such as target detection and image classification. However, existing methods based on the neural network usually have small receptive fields and ignore the image detail. We propose a novel method named deep memory connected network (DMCN) based on a convolutional neural network to reconstruct high-quality super-resolution images. We build local and global memory connections to combine image detail with environmental information. To further reduce parameters and ease time-consuming, we propose down-sampling units, shrinking the spatial size of feature maps. We test DMCN on three remote sensing datasets with different spatial resolution. Experimental results indicate that our method yields promising improvements in both accuracy and visual performance over the current state-of-the-art.

An attention-based word-level interaction model: Relation detection for knowledge base question answering

Relation detection plays a crucial role in Knowledge Base Question Answering (KBQA) because of the high variance of relation expression in the question. Traditional deep learning methods follow an encoding-comparing paradigm, where the question and the candidate relation are represented as vectors to compare their semantic similarity. Max- or average- pooling operation, which compresses the sequence of words into fixed-dimensional vectors, becomes the bottleneck of information. In this paper, we propose to learn attention-based word-level interactions between questions and relations to alleviate the bottleneck issue. Similar to the traditional models, the question and relation are firstly represented as sequences of vectors. Then, instead of merging the sequence into a single vector with pooling operation, soft alignments between words from the question and the relation are learned. The aligned words are subsequently compared with the convolutional neural network (CNN) and the comparison results are merged finally. Through performing the comparison on low-level representations, the attention-based word-level interaction model (ABWIM) relieves the information loss issue caused by merging the sequence into a fixed-dimensional vector before the comparison. The experimental results of relation detection on both SimpleQuestions and WebQuestions datasets show that ABWIM achieves state-of-the-art accuracy, demonstrating its effectiveness. Domain generalization via conditional invariant representations

Domain generalization aims to apply knowledge gained from multiple labeled source domains to unseen target domains. The main difficulty comes from the dataset bias: Training data and test data have different distributions, and the training set contains heterogeneous samples from different distributions. Let X denote the features, and Y be the class labels. Existing domain generalization methods address the dataset bias problem by learning a domain-invariant representation h(X) that has the same marginal distribution (h(X)) across multiple source domains. The functional relationship encoded in (Y jX) is usually assumed to be stable across domains such that (Y jh(X)) is also invariant. However, it is unclear whether this assumption holds in practical problems. In this paper, we consider the general situation where both (X) and (Y jX) can change across all domains. We propose to learn a feature representation which has domain-invariant class conditional distributions (h(X)jY ). With the conditional invariant representation, the invariance of the joint distribution (h(X);Y ) can be guaranteed if the class prior (Y ) does not change across training and test domains. Road extraction from high-resolution remote sensing images has been applied in many domains, but it is still full of challenges. We focus on the problem of slender roads, proposing a new multiple feature pyramid network (MFPN), which is composed of an effective feature pyramid and the tailored pyramid pooling module based on PSPNet. These two designs can address the sparsity of roads in remote sensing images via using multi-level semantic features. Experiments on remote sensing images from Quick Bird show that our MFPN model achieves competitive performance, especially for slender roads.

Circular synthetic aperture radar (CSAR) can provide distinctive multi-aspect anisotropic scattering signatures. However, it is impossible to retain the anisotropic signatures in a SAR image that combines all the subapertures coherently or incoherently. In this letter, we propose a polarimetric CSAR anisotropic scattering detection framework to characterize multi-aspect and fully polarimetric SAR signatures of point-like and distributed targets. We applied this framework to quantify and rank media polarimetric scattering dissimilarity over all aspects and to determine whether the most different one shows anisotropy by use of constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detection. Furthermore, we demonstrated the monotonicity of CFAR detection function and incorporated this function to decrease the complexity of the anisotropic scattering test. Our algorithm was validated and applied to a set of airborne P-band fully polarimetric circular SAR data acquired by the Institute of Electronics, Chinese Academy of Science (IEcas). The results indicate the framework can retain anisotropic scattering and extract a series of new multi-aspect polarimetric SAR signatures for terrain classification.

Through the recent performance of convolutional neural networks in image processing tasks, we propose a deep fully convolutional network for remote sensing image inpainting. The proposed Dense-Add Net (Dense-Add Network) can alleviate the vanishing-gradient problem, strengthen feature reuse, and substantially reduce the memory usage. We apply residual learning to learn the mappings from corrupted image to recovered image directly;it will back-propagate gradient to the bottom layers and accelerate the training process. We train the proposed Dense-Add Net with a robust Charbonnier loss function which can achieve high-quality reconstruction. The experimental verify the efficacy of our proposed Dense-Add Net.
