Image super-resolution quality assessment: Structural fidelity versus statistical naturalness

Single image super-resolution (SISR) algorithms reconstruct high-resolution (HR) images with their low-resolution (LR) counterparts. It is desirable to develop image quality assessment (IQA) methods that can not only evaluate and compare SISR algorithms, but also guide their future development. In this paper, we assess the quality of SISR generated images in a two-dimensional (2D) space of structural fidelity versus statistical naturalness. This allows us to observe the behaviors of different SISR algorithms as a tradeoff in the 2D space. Specifically, SISR methods are traditionally designed to achieve high structural fidelity but often sacrifice statistical naturalness, while recent generative adversarial network (GAN) based algorithms tend to create more natural-looking results but lose significantly on structural fidelity. Furthermore, such a 2D evaluation can be easily fused to a scalar quality prediction. Interestingly, we find that a simple linear combination of a straightforward local structural fidelity and a global statistical naturalness measures produce surprisingly accurate predictions of SISR image quality when tested using public subject-rated SISR image datasets. Gaofen-3 (GF-3) is the first Chinese multichannel synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensor that can operate in the dual receive channel (DRC) mode. Different from the traditional single-channel SAR system, the multichannel SAR system can overcome the inherent limitation to achieve high-resolution and wide-swath (HRWS) at the same time. However, the key challenge it faces is false target suppression. Especially for the moving vessels on the ocean, the existence of false targets will increase false alarm probability and affect the interpretation of SAR images. In this paper, the method of integration of detection, velocity estimation, location, and imaging for moving targets in the HRWS SAR system is proposed as well as applied to get an unambiguous image. The simulation and GF-3 real data experimental results show the validity of the method.

Ship detection has been playing a significant role in the field of remote sensing for a long time but it is still full of challenges. The main limitations of traditional ship detection methods usually lie in the complexity of application scenarios, the difficulty of intensive object detection and the redundancy of detection region. In order to solve such problems above, we propose a framework called Rotation Dense Feature Pyramid Networks (R-DFPN) which can effectively detect ship in different scenes including ocean and port. Specifically, we put forward the Dense Feature Pyramid Network (DFPN), which is aimed at solving the problem resulted from the narrow width of the ship. Compared with previous multi-scale detectors such as Feature Pyramid Network (FPN), DFPN builds the high-level semantic feature-maps for all scales by means of dense connections, through which enhances the feature propagation and encourages the feature reuse. Additionally, in the case of ship rotation and dense arrangement, we design a rotation anchor strategy to predict the minimum circumscribed rectangle of the object so as to reduce the redundant detection region and improve the recall. Furthermore, we also propose multi-scale ROI Align for the purpose of maintaining the completeness of semantic and spatial information. Experiments based on remote sensing images from Google Earth for ship detection show that our detection method based on RDFPN representation has a state-of-The-Art performance. Cloud detection is a crucial step in the preprocessing of satellite remote sensing images. Existing methods tend to have misjudgments when dealing with specific scenarios, such as challenges in distinguishing thin clouds from the background and addressing missing cloud boundaries. To solve this problem, we designed a novel spatial–Frequency Domain Feature Enhancement Block (SFDE) embedded in a U-shaped network called SFDE-net. SFDE consists of three units: the Dual Frequency Feature Unit (DFF), the spatial Domain Feature Unit (SDF), and the Cross-Domain Feature Fusion Unit (CDF). DFF globally learns the boundaries and overall structure of clouds in the frequency domain, SDF captures fine-grained information in the spatial domain, and CDF adaptively fuses features from both DFF and SDF. Our method’s effectiveness was evaluated on two public datasets, GF-1 WFV and LandSat8. Extensive experiments demonstrated that the proposed SFDE-net achieved accurate detection accuracy and outperformed several state-of-the-art methods.

Miyun Reservoir has produced huge benefits in flood control, agricultural irrigation, power generation, aquaculture, tourism, and urban water supply. Accurately water mapping is of great significance to the ecological environment monitoring of the Miyun Reservoir and the management of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project. On the 60th anniversary of the completion of the Miyun Reservoir, we took the Miyun Reservoir as the study area and collected all the Landsat-5 and Landsat-8 remote sensing images from 1984 to 2020 for water mapping. Based on the spectral, topographical and temporal-spatial characteristics of water, we proposed an automated method for long-term researvoir mapping, which can solve the problems caused by cloud, shadow, ice and snow pixels. Moreover, it can also deal with the "same objects with different spectra" and spectral mixed problems. The overall accuracy is as high as 98.2% for the case with no cloud or snow/ice cover. The landscape division index is introduced to analyze the morphological changes of Miyun Reservoir. Based on the mapping results, it is suggested that the water area change of the reservoir can be divided into five periods: "growth period" (1984-1993), "peak period" (1994-1999), "decline period" (2000-2003), "protection period" "(2004-2014), and "recovery period" (2015-2020), during which the east and west areas of the reservoir have experienced the process of "division-combination-division-combination". The largest reservoir area reached 151.6 km2 (1995), and the smallest area was only 57.3 km2 (2004). Moreover, we also find that the largest area in a year occurs from August to September, and the smallest area occurs in May. In addition, we have found that the changes of water area of Miyun Reservoir are closely connected to urban development, government policies and precipitation varitations. Correlation filters (CF) have received considerable attention in visual tracking because of their computational efficiency. Leveraging deep features via off-the-shelf CNN models (e.g., VGG), CF trackers achieve state-of-the-art performance while consuming a large number of computing resources. This limits deep CF trackers to be deployed to many mobile platforms on which only a single-core CPU is available. In this paper, we propose to jointly compress and transfer off-the-shelf CNN models within a knowledge distillation framework. We formulate a CNN model pretrained from the image classification task as a teacher network, and distill this teacher network into a lightweight student network as the feature extractor to speed up CF trackers. In the distillation process, we propose a fidelity loss to enable the student network to maintain the representation capability of the teacher network. Meanwhile, we design a tracking loss to adapt the objective of the student network from object recognition to visual tracking. The distillation process is performed offline on multiple layers and adaptively updates the student network using a background-aware online learning scheme. Extensive experiments on five challenging datasets demonstrate that the lightweight student network accelerates the speed of state-of-the-art deep CF trackers to real-time on a single-core CPU while maintaining almost the same tracking accuracy. Recently, various high-order methods have been developed to solve the convex optimization problem. The auxiliary problem of these methods shares the general form that is the same as the high-order proximal operator proposed by Nesterov. In this paper, we present a linearly convergent method to solve the high-order proximal operator based on the classical proximal operator.
