Single image super-resolution (SR) has been widely studied in recent years as a crucial technique for remote sensing applications. This paper proposes a SR method for remote sensing images based on a transferred generative adversarial network (TGAN). Different from the previous GAN-based SR approaches, the novelty of our method mainly reflects from two aspects. First, the batch normalization layers are removed to reduce the memory consumption and the computational burden, as well as raising the accuracy. Second, our model is trained in a transfer-learning fashion to cope with the insufficiency of training data, which is the crux of applying deep learning methods to remote sensing applications. The model is firstly trained on an external dataset DIV2K and further fine-tuned with the remote sensing dataset. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is superior to SRCNN and SRGAN in terms of both the objective evaluation and the subjective perspective.

Evolution of AVS video coding standards: twenty years of innovation and development

Ever since the founding of the Audio and Video Coding Standard(AVS) Workgroup of China in 2002, it has been dedicated to advancing and innovating the digital audio-video industry with highly efficient and economical encoding/decoding technologies. Three representative generations of video coding standards have been finalized and published, consistently improving the coding performance in the past two *** series of AVS standards establish solid foundations for ubiquitous video applications in the areas including acquisition, coding, production, delivery, integrated system, public service, general screen content, and mixed reality media. Along with the standardization process, an extensive amount of studies have been carried out on efficiency-aware designation, algorithm optimization, and hardware implementation of these innovative video coding techniques. This paper explains how those developed techniques provide a lasting impact on the video coding community, extensively, technologically, and systematically. In particular, we provide a comprehensive survey of the three generations of the standards, and timely and in-depth summarize the efforts of the AVS video coding standards in the twenty years. The rate-distortion performance comparisons,in particular in terms of the 8K ultra-high-definition(UHD) contents, reflect the elegant design of the state-of-the-art AVS3 standards. We have also elaborated on a variety of well-established and promising applications, including commercial level real-time 8K encoder, high-frame-rate decoder chip for cell phone,and live streaming solution for sports. In addition, the China Central Television(CCTV) of China Media Group(CMG), the state television of China, has officially launched the first 8K broadcasting channel(CCTV-8K) since 2021 using AVS3. Given the significant success realized by the AVS standards, it is envisioned that a new era of 8K UHD video is arriving.

Compressed sensing (CS) technology has been applied to topographic synthetic aperture radar (TomoSAR) imaging due to the sparsity of elevation signals. The traditional CS algorithms discretize the elevation into many grids and assume that the scatterers are located on grids, therefore, the accuracy of the traditional CS algorithms is limited by the off-grid effect. Although there are currently methods to address the off-grid effect, such as atomic norm minimization (ANM), its application is limited by the baseline distribution form of TomoSAR, which only applies to uniformly observed scenarios. Alternating Descent Conditional Gradient (ADCG) has been applied in many fields as a gridless imaging algorithm. In this paper, we apply ADCG to TomoSAR imaging for the first time, achieving the reconstruction of non-uniform baseline observation scenes. The effectiveness of ADCG in TomoSAR imaging was verified by comparing it with iterative soft thresholding (IST) and orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) through simulation experiments. © The Institution of Engineering & technology 2023.

A Lyapunov-based control scheme is presented to drive closed quantum systems into any target eigenstate with as high population as possible by the quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization（PSO） algorithm. Based on a Lyapunov function with a Hermitian operator to be constructed, a control law with the unknown parameters contained in the Hermitian operator is designed. To achieve high-population state transfer to the target state, we first initialize those unknown parameters by choosing a path to the target state in its energy-level connectivity graph and setting their values along the path. Then, a set of optimal parameters is found by the quantum-behaved PSO algorithm. Finally, numerical simulation experiments are performed on a five-level quantum system and a four-qubit system to demonstrate the effectiveness of the control scheme in this paper.

This study introduces an automatic method for change detection of multi-sensor remote-sensing images (e.g. optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images). As object-based image analysis can effectively reduce the spurious changes and the sensitivity to registration, first, multi-date segmentation is employed to generate homogeneous image objects in spectral, spatial, and temporal, in order to weak the intensity variation effects of multi-sensor images. Then, modified fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithms are employed to preliminarily classify optical and SAR images, and a criterion is defined using membership values of parcels to select the sample parcels for each class and image. Finally, a change detection principle, which takes statistical properties as the feature space, is introduced to detect changes between multi-sensor images. The experiment results verify that the proposed method is able to cope with optical and SAR images change detection. © 2019 Institution of Engineering and technology. All rights reserved.

Multi-agent consensus equilibrium(MACE) mechanism is a generalization of popular used PnP-ADMM method in computational imaging. We propose a novel SAR processing framework based on MACE mechanism, named by MACE-SAR. The proposed framework offers the possibility to unify various SAR processing agents of both data-driven learned priors and physics-based regularization priors, enabling the integration of diverse functions and enhance the image reconstruction quality. We exemplifies how the MACE-SAR framework can be customized to combine SAR image formation, feature enhancement, image denoising, target detection, etc. The effectiveness of the framework is demonstrated through experiments conducted on simulated and Gaofen-3 satellite real data. © VDE VERLAG GMBH ∙ Berlin ∙ Offenbach.

Interpreting the Latent Space of GANs via Correlation Analysis for Controllable Concept Manipulation

Generative adversarial nets (GANs) have been successfully applied in many fields like image generation, inpainting, super-resolution and drug discovery, etc., by now, the inner process of GANs is far from been understood. To get deeper insight of the intrinsic mechanism of GANs, in this paper, a method for interpreting the latent space of GANs by analyzing the correlation between latent variables and the corresponding semantic contents in generated images is proposed. Unlike previous methods that focus on dissecting models via feature visualization, the emphasis of this work is put on the variables in latent space, i.e. how the latent variables affect the quantitative analysis of generated results. Given a pretrained GAN model with weights fixed, the latent variables are intervened to analyze their effect on the semantic content in generated images. A set of controlling latent variables can be derived for specific content generation, and the controllable semantic content manipulation be achieved. The proposed method is testified on the datasets Fashion-MNIST and UT Zappos50K, experiment results show its effectiveness. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The scalable and multiview extensions of the High Efficiency Video Coding share the same high-level syntax coding structure. For the scalable extension, the motion field of the inter-layer reference picture is modified through Motion Field Mapping before used for motion vector prediction. However, the motion field of the inter-layer reference picture is used without modification in the multiview extension. In this paper, a disparity-compensated inter-layer motion prediction is proposed for multiview video coding to achieve disparity compensation in inter-layer motion prediction using the scaled reference layer offset. The experimental results show that comparing with the multiview extension anchor, the proposed method achieves an average of 1.1% bitrate reduction.

This article mainly deals with the control and stability problems of networked Hammerstein with nonlinear input. A novel predictive controller design method is proposed to offset the effect of network delay and data dropout. The controller gain which depends on the time delay of the feedback channel is time-variant. Since we assume that the state is not measurable, the control signal is based on the state estimated by the observer. As for the nonlinear part of the input,We assume it satisfies a sector constraint and treat it as a input inaccuracy. Theoretical results are presented for the closed-loop stability by modeling the system as time-delay Hammerstein system with nonlinear inputs. A second-order Hammerstein system is implemented to show the enhanced performance of this control method.

With the rapid advancement of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors, it has become more important to extract change information between high-resolution SAR images. Considering the efficacy and robustness of segmentation-based strategy in solving fine-resolution images, as well as the excellent performance of deep learning in feature extraction, therefore, in this paper, we propose an unsupervised region-level graph convolutional network (URGCN) for SAR change detection. Firstly, we propose a multi-temporal joint segmentation method to generate multi-level regions. This method can simultaneously segment bi-temporal SAR images and automatically align bi-temporal regions during segmentation process. We then perform pre-classification on difference images generated by neighborhood ratio detector. The high confidence training samples are selected through hierarchical clustering. Thirdly, we encode the segmented regions are as a graph structure and construct GCN model. The graph can capture the spatial and temporal structure information. Finally, the GCN model parameters are optimized by labeled samples and inferring unlabeled regions. Experimental results on two VHR SAR change detection datasets demonstrated that the proposed method can extract complete change information with high accuracy compared to alternative approaches. © 2024 SPIE.
