In this paper, we study a simplified affine motion model based coding framework to overcome the limitation of translational motion model and maintain low computational complexity. The proposed framework mainly has three key contributions. First, we propose to reduce the number of affine motion parameters from 6 to 4. The proposed four-parameter affine motion model can not only handle most of the complex motions in natural videos but also save the bits for two parameters. Second, to efficiently encode the affine motion parameters, we propose two motion prediction modes, i.e., advanced affine motion vector prediction combined with a gradient-based fast affine motion estimation algorithm and affine model merge, where the latter attempts to reuse the affine motion parameters (instead of the motion vectors) of neighboring blocks. Third, we propose two fast affine motion compensation algorithms. One is the one-step sub-pixel interpolation, which reduces the computations of each interpolation. The other is the interpolation-precision-based adaptive block size motion compensation, which performs motion compensation at the block level rather than the pixel level to reduce the interpolation times. Our proposed techniques have been implemented based on the state-of-the-art high efficiency video coding standard, and the experimental results show that the proposed techniques altogether achieve on average 11.1% and 19.3% bits saving for random access and low delay configurations, respectively, on typical video sequences that have rich rotation or zooming motions. Visual analyses of music history: A user-centric approach

Music history, referring to the records of users' listening or downloading history in online music services, is the primary source for music service providers to analyze users' preferences on music and thus to provide personalized recommendations to users. In order to engage users into the service and to improve user experience, it would be beneficial to provide visual analyses of one user's music history as well as visualized recommendations to that user. In this paper, we take a user-centric approach to the design of such visual analyses. We start by investigating user needs on such visual analyses and recommendations, then propose several different visualization schemes, and perform a pilot study to collect user feedback on the designed schemes. We further conduct user studies to verify the utility of the proposed schemes, and the results not only demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed visualization, but also provide important insights to guide the visualization design in the future. In this paper, we consider the problem of sensor scheduling under limited resources for two linear dynamical systems. We set up that only two sensor nodes were used to monitor the status of two systems, respectively, and consider the scenario that the sensors are smart enough to have abundant computation capability. At each time, the sensors have to decide whether to transmit its local estimate to the remote control center or not for further processing owing to the limited available energy and low channel bandwidth. The necessary condition for the optimal scheduling of sensors is presented which can significantly reduce the feasible optimal solution space. Based on this necessary condition, we construct an optimal explicit sensor schedule, which is periodic and minimizes the estimation error. Examples and simulations are provided at the end of the paper to support the results.

This paper is concerned with the networked predictive control of discrete-time bilinear *** deal with the network-induced communication delay that exists in both forward channel（controller to actuator）and feedback channel（sensor to controller）,a bilinear networked predictive control scheme is *** a non-convex optimization problem of solving the predictive control sequence is presented,for which two gradually-optimized algorithms are proposed based on the special structure of bilinear system dynamics *** numerical simulation indicates that the resulting predictive control sequence can compensate for the network-induced issues actively,which proves the effectiveness of the proposed predictive control strategy.

In many image-related tasks, learning expressive and discriminative representations of images is essential, and deep learning has been studied for automating the learning of such representations. Some user-centric tasks, such as image recommendations, call for effective representations of not only images but also preferences and intents of users over images. Such representations are termed hybrid and addressed via a deep learning approach in this paper. We design a dual-net deep network, in which the two subnetworks map input images and preferences of users into a same latent semantic space, and then the distances between images and users in the latent space are calculated to make decisions. We further propose a comparative deep learning (CDL) method to train the deep network, using a pair of images compared against one user to learn the pattern of their relative distances. The CDL embraces much more training data than naive deep learning, and thus achieves superior performance than the latter, with no cost of increasing network complexity. Experimental results with real-world data sets for image recommendations have shown the proposed dual-net network and CDL greatly outperform other stateof-the-art image recommendation solutions.

We study the problem of recognizing sign language automatically using the RGB videos and skeleton coordinates captured by Kinect, which is of great significance in communication between the deaf and the hearing societies. In this paper, we propose a sign language recognition (SLR) system with data of two channels, including the gesture videos of the sign words and joint trajectories. In our framework, we extract two modals of features to represent the hand shape videos and hand trajectories for recognition. The variation of gesture is obtained by 3D CNN and the activations of fully connected layers are used as the representations of these sign videos. For trajectories, we use the shape context to describe each joint, and combine them all within a feature matrix. After that, a convolutional neural network is applied to generate a robust representation of these trajectories. Furthermore, we fuse these features and train a SVM classifier for recognition. We conduct some experiments on large vocabulary sign language dataset with up to 500 words and the results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method. © Springer International Publishing AG 2016.

Automatic image annotation has been extensively studied, mostly from a content-based approach, whose effectiveness is restricted by the 'semantic gap' between low-level image features and semantic annotations, and by the irrelevance of annotations to image content. We propose a social diffusion analysis approach to image annotation, which exploits abundant social diffusion records about how images are disseminated within online social networks. Specifically, we propose a common-interest model to analyze social diffusion records, with the assumption that the diffusion pattern of an image in social networks is highly related to the relevance between image annotations and user preferences. In our proposed model, user preferences are represented as common interests of pairwise users instead of individual user interests. We find the notion of common interests not only facilitates the analysis of social diffusion patterns, but also leads to more accurate profiling of user preferences compared to individual interests. Based on the common-interest model, we design an image annotation framework via social diffusion analysis, which consists of the mining of common interests from social diffusion records, the feature extraction from diffusion graphs and common interests, and the automatic annotation by the learning-to-rank method. Experimental results on real-world data sets show that our proposed common-interest based approach outperforms individual-interest based methods, and also achieves superior performance than state-of-the-art content-based image annotation methods. © 2016 IEEE.

—The explosive increase and ubiquitous accessibility of visual data on the Web have led to the prosperity of research activity in image search or retrieval. With the ignorance of visual content as a ranking clue, methods with text search techniques for visual retrieval may suffer inconsistency between the text words and visual content. Content-based image retrieval (CBIR), which makes use of the representation of visual content to identify relevant images, has attracted sustained attention in recent two decades. Such a problem is challenging due to the intention gap and the semantic gap problems. Numerous techniques have been developed for content-based image retrieval in the last decade. The purpose of this paper is to categorize and evaluate those algorithms proposed during the period of 2003 to 2016. We conclude with several promising directions for future research. With the advantage in compact representation and efficient comparison, binary hashing has been extensively investigated for approximate nearest neighbor search. In this paper, we propose a novel and general hashing framework, which simultaneously considers a new linear pair-wise distance preserving objective and point-wise constraint. The direct distance preserving objective aims to keep the linear relationships between the Euclidean distance and the Hamming distance of data points. Based on different pointwise constraints, we propose two methods to instantiate this framework. The first one is a pseudo-supervised hashing method, which uses existing unsupervised hashing methods to generate binary codes as pseudo-supervised information. The second one is an unsupervised hashing method, in which quantization loss is considered. We validate our framework on two large-scale datasets. The experiments demonstrate that our pseudo-supervised method achieves consistent improvement for the state-of-the-art unsupervised hashing methods, while our unsupervised method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. ©2016 ACM.

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved stateof-the-art results on many visual recognition tasks. However, current CNN models still exhibit a poor ability to be invariant to spatial transformations of images. Intuitively, with sufficient layers and parameters, hierarchical combinations of convolution (matrix multiplication and nonlinear activation) and pooling operations should be able to learn a robust mapping from transformed input images to transform-invariant representations. In this paper, we propose randomly transforming (rotation, scale, and translation) feature maps of CNNs during the training stage. This prevents complex dependencies of specific rotation, scale, and translation levels of training images in CNN models. Rather, each convolutional kernel learns to detect a feature that is generally helpful for producing the transforminvariant answer given the combinatorially large variety of transform levels of its input feature maps. In this way, we do not require any extra training supervision or modification to the optimization process and training images. We show that random transformation provides significant improvements of CNNs on many benchmark tasks, including small-scale image recognition, large-scale image recognition, and image retrieval. © 2016 ACM.
