Deep multi-scale features learning for distorted image quality assessment

Image quality assessment (IQA) aims to estimate human perception based image visual quality. Although existing deep neural networks (DNNs) have shown significant effectiveness for tackling the IQA problem, it still needs to improve the DNN-based quality assessment models by exploiting efficient multi-scale features. In this paper, motivated by the human visual system (HVS) combining multi-scale features for perception, we propose to use pyramid features learning to build a DNN with hierarchical multi-scale features for distorted image quality prediction. Our model is based on both residual maps and distorted images in luminance domain, where the proposed network contains spatial pyramid pooling and feature pyramid from the network structure. Our proposed network is optimized in a deep end-to-end supervision manner. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, extensive experiments are conducted on four widely-used image quality assessment databases, demonstrating the superiority of our algorithm. © 2020, CC BY.

Single image super-resolution (SISR) aims to recover the high-resolution (HR) image from its low-resolution (LR) input image. With the development of deep learning, SISR has achieved great progress. However, It is still a challenge to restore the real-world LR image with complicated authentic degradations. Therefore, we propose FAN, a frequency aggregation network, to address the real-world image super-resolution problem. Specifically, we extract different frequencies of the LR image and pass them to a channel attention-grouped residual dense network (CA-GRDB) individually to output corresponding feature maps. And then aggregating these residual dense feature maps adaptively to recover the HR image with enhanced details and textures. We conduct extensive experiments quantitatively and qualitatively to verify that our FAN performs well on the real image super-resolution task of AIM 2020 challenge. According to the released final results, our team SR-IM achieves the fourth place on the X4 track with PSNR of 31.1735 and SSIM of 0.8728. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) has been the commonly used transform for a few decades in image/video coding. However, DCT does not work well on the blocks having anisotropic correlations. In this paper, based on the adaptive dictionary, we propose a new online transform scheme using Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (OMP) for High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). For a coding block, we construct its dictionary by exploiting non-local correlations from the reconstructed regions. The OMP algorithm is implemented to obtain the sparse transform coefficients. Experimental results show that the BD-rate savings of the proposed scheme for the sequences with strong edges can be up to 19.9%.

Existing learning-based methods for blind image quality assessment (BIQA) are heavily dependent on large amounts of annotated training data, and usually suffer from a severe performance degradation when encountering the domain/distribution shift problem. Thanks to the development of unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA), some works attempt to transfer the knowledge from a label-sufficient source domain to a label-free target domain under domain shift with UDA. However, it requires the coexistence of source and target data, which might be impractical for source data due to the privacy or storage issues. In this paper, we take the first step towards the source-free unsupervised domain adaptation (SFUDA) in a simple yet efficient manner for BIQA to tackle the domain shift without access to the source data. Specifically, we cast the quality assessment task as a rating distribution prediction problem. Based on the intrinsic properties of BIQA, we present a group of well-designed self-supervised objectives to guide the adaptation of the BN affine parameters towards the target domain. Among them, minimizing the prediction entropy and maximizing the batch prediction diversity aim to encourage more confident results while avoiding the trivial solution. Besides, based on the observation that the IQA rating distribution of single image follows the Gaussian distribution, we apply Gaussian regularization to the predicted rating distribution to make it more consistent with the nature of human scoring. Extensive experimental results under cross-domain scenarios demonstrated the effectiveness of our proposed method to mitigate the domain shift. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Blind omnidirectional image quality assessment with viewport oriented graph convolutional networks

Quality assessment of omnidirectional images has become increasingly urgent due to the rapid growth of virtual reality applications. Different from traditional 2D images and videos, omnidirectional contents can provide consumers with freely changeable viewports and a larger field of view covering the 360° × 180° spherical surface, which makes the objective quality assessment of omnidirectional images more challenging. In this paper, motivated by the characteristics of the human vision system (HVS) and the viewing process of omnidirectional contents, we propose a novel Viewport oriented Graph Convolution Network (VGCN) for blind omnidirectional image quality assessment (IQA). Generally, observers tend to give the subjective rating of a 360-degree image after passing and aggregating different viewports information when browsing the spherical scenery. Therefore, in order to model the mutual dependency of viewports in the omnidirectional image, we build a spatial viewport graph. Specifically, the graph nodes are first defined with selected viewports with higher probabilities to be seen, which is inspired by the HVS that human beings are more sensitive to structural information. Then, these nodes are connected by spatial relations to capture interactions among them. Finally, reasoning on the proposed graph is performed via graph convolutional networks. Moreover, we simultaneously obtain global quality using the entire omnidirectional image without viewport sampling to boost the performance according to the viewing experience. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed model outperforms state-of-the-art full-reference and no-reference IQA metrics on two public omnidirectional IQA databases. In recent years, deep learning has achieved promising success for multimedia quality assessment, especially for image quality assessment (IQA). However, since there exist more complex temporal characteristics in videos, very little work has been done on video quality assessment (VQA) by exploiting powerful deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs). In this paper, we propose an efficient VQA method named Deep SpatioTemporal video Quality assessor (DeepSTQ) to predict the perceptual quality of various distorted videos in a no-reference manner. In the proposed DeepSTQ, we first extract local and global spatiotemporal features by pre-trained deep learning models without fine-tuning or training from scratch. The composited features consider distorted video frames as well as frame difference maps from both global and local views. Then, the feature aggregation is conducted by the regression model to predict the perceptual video quality. Finally, experimental results demonstrate that our proposed DeepSTQ outperforms state-of-the-art quality assessment algorithms. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

StyleAM: Perception-Oriented Unsupervised Domain Adaption for Non-reference Image Quality Assessment

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have shown great potential in non-reference image quality assessment (NR-IQA). However, the annotation of NR-IQA is labor-intensive and time-consuming, which severely limits their application especially for authentic images. To relieve the dependence on quality annotation, some works have applied unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) to NR-IQA. However, the above methods ignore that the alignment space used in classification is suboptimal, since the space is not elaborately designed for perception. To solve this challenge, we propose an effective perception-oriented unsupervised domain adaptation method StyleAM for NR-IQA, which transfers sufficient knowledge from label-rich source domain data to label-free target domain images via Style Alignment and Mixup. Specifically, we find a more compact and reliable space i.e., feature style space for perception-oriented UDA based on an interesting/amazing observation, that the feature style (i.e., the mean and variance) of the deep layer in DNNs is exactly associated with the quality score in NR-IQA. Therefore, we propose to align the source and target domains in a more perceptual-oriented space i.e., the feature style space, to reduce the intervention from other quality-irrelevant feature factors. Furthermore, to increase the consistency between quality score and its feature style, we also propose a novel feature augmentation strategy Style Mixup, which mixes the feature styles (i.e., the mean and variance) before the last layer of DNNs together with mixing their labels. Extensive experimental results on two typical cross-domain settings (i.e., synthetic to authentic, and multiple distortions to one distortion) have demonstrated the effectiveness of our proposed StyleAM on NR-IQA. Attribute Artifacts Removal for geometry-based Point Cloud Compression

geometry-based point cloud compression (G-PCC) can achieve remarkable compression efficiency for point clouds. However, it still leads to serious attribute compression artifacts, especially under low bitrate scenarios. In this paper, we propose a Multi-Scale Graph Attention Network (MS-GAT) to remove the artifacts of point cloud attributes compressed by G-PCC. We first construct a graph based on point cloud geometry coordinates and then use the Chebyshev graph convolutions to extract features of point cloud attributes. Considering that one point may be correlated with points both near and far away from it, we propose a multi-scale scheme to capture the short- and long-range correlations between the current point and its neighboring and distant points. To address the problem that various points may have different degrees of artifacts caused by adaptive quantization, we introduce the quantization step per point as an extra input to the proposed network. We also incorporate a weighted graph attentional layer into the network to pay special attention to the points with more attribute artifacts. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attribute artifacts removal method for G-PCC. We validate the effectiveness of our method over various point clouds. Objective comparison results show that our proposed method achieves an average of 9.74% BD-rate reduction compared with Predlift and 10.13% BD-rate reduction compared with RAHT. Subjective comparison results present that visual artifacts such as color shifting, blurring, and quantization noise are reduced. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Hybrid-distorted image restoration (HD-IR) is dedicated to restore real distorted image that is degraded by multiple distortions. Existing HD-IR approaches usually ignore the inherent interference among hybrid distortions which compromises the restoration performance. To decompose such interference, we introduce the concept of Disentangled Feature Learning to achieve the feature-level divide-and-conquer of hybrid distortions. Specifically, we propose the feature disentanglement module (FDM) to distribute feature representations of different distortions into different channels by revising gain-control-based normalization. We also propose a feature aggregation module (FAM) with channel-wise attention to adaptively filter out the distortion representations and aggregate useful content information from different channels for the construction of raw image. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified by visualizing the correlation matrix of features and channel responses of different distortions. Extensive experimental results also prove superior performance of our approach compared with the latest HD-IR schemes. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.
