How the ability to analyse tendencies influences decision satisfaction

Using agents to represent decision-makers is a complex task. It is important that agents can understand the context and be more proactive. Here we propose a model and an algorithm that will allow the agent to analyse tendencies regarding the number of supporters for each alternative along the process. It is intended that agents can be more dynamic and intelligent and can evaluate different contexts throughout the decision-making process. We believe agents will achieve better and consensual decisions more easily. We tested our model in three simulation environments with different complexity levels. Our model proved that agents that use it will obtain higher average consensus and satisfaction levels. Besides that, agents using this model will obtain those higher consensus and satisfaction levels in most of the times compared to agents that do not use it. © IBERAMIA and the authors.

In order to suppress the GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) limitation to track persons in indoor or in dense environments, a pedestrian inertial navigation system can be used. However, this type of systems have huge location estimation errors due to the Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) characteristics and the use of low-cost inertial sensors. To suppress some of these errors we propose a system that uses several sensors spread in person's body combined with information fusion techniques. Information fusion techniques provide lighter algorithms implementations, to count and classify the type of step, to run in mobile devices. Thus, improving pedestrian inertial navigation systems accuracy. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Most of pedestrian inertial navigation system estimates displacement based on the integration of inertial sensors measurements. However, due to low-cost sensors and pedestrian dead reckoning inherent characteristics these systems provide huge location estimation errors. To suppress some of these limitations we propose a pedestrian inertial navigation system based on low-cost sensors and on information fusion and learning techniques. The proposed system introduces a step characterization module that characterizes the step according to the activity that the pedestrian is performing. This module performs three characterizations: terrain, direction and length. Thus, in this work are presented and evaluated several machine learning approaches that perform the terrain characterization. The inclusion of this machine learning module led to a significantly better performance of the pedestrian inertial navigation system. © 2015 SERSC.

The market globalization and the firms’ internationalization hinder the matching of the top managers’ agenda, making it difficult to meet in the same space or time. On the one hand, the appearance of Ubiquitous Group Decision Support Systems (UbiGDSS) ena-bled individuals to gather and make decisions in different spaces at different times, but on the other hand, originated problems related to the lack of human interaction. To under-stand how the arguments used can influence each of the decision-makers, what is their satisfaction regarding the decision made, and other affective issues such as emotions and mood, are some examples of that lack. In order to try to overcome this lack, we propose a theoretical model that is specially designed for agents, helping to understand the interac-tions impact on each agent and their satisfaction with the decision made. © 2015 SERSC.

One of the most important factors to determine the success of an organization is the quality of decisions made. In order to improve the decisions taken and to strengthen the competitiveness of organizations, systems such as Group Decision Support Systems (GDSSs) have been strongly developed and studied in recent decades. The amount of GDSSs incorporating automatic negotiation mechanisms, such as argumentation, is increasing nowadays. The evaluation of these mechanisms and the understanding of their real benefits for the organizations is still a hard challenge. In this article, we propose a model that allows a GDSS to measure the participant's satisfaction with the decision, considering aspects such as problem evaluation, personality, emotions and expectations. This model is intended to enable the understanding of the decision's quality achieved with an argumentation system and to evaluate its capability to potentiate the decision's quality. The proposed model validates all the assumptions found in the literature regarding the participant's satisfaction. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Managing Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy Using Data Mining

When a woman aims to terminate an unplanned pregnancy, she must go to a specialized healthcare unit, such as Júlio Dinis Maternity Hospital. In this unit, the procedures of voluntary interruption of pregnancy are done by two kinds of drug administration: the first one is always done by a nursing team, the second one can be performed at home or by a nursing team, depending on patient features. It is important to give the best option to the pregnant. In this paper, it is proposed to predict whether the second drug phase is done at home or at the hospital. The use of Data Mining (DM) helps in performing this step. Throughout this study, DM models capable to make predictions in a real environment using real data were induced. It was adopted the Cross-Industry Standard Process for Data Mining (CRISP-DM) methodology. Four distinct techniques were considered: Decision Tree (DT), Naïve Bayes (NB), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Generalized Linear Models (GLM) to perform classification tasks. Using these techniques it was possible to obtain acceptable results for each model. A value greater than 89% of accuracy and 91% in sensibility was achieved in some models.

Currently the Ambient Assisted Living and the Ambient Intelligence areas are very prolific. There is a demand of security and comfort that should be ensured at people's homes. The AAL4ALL (ambient assisted living for all) project aims to develop a unified ecosystem and a certification process, allowing the development of fully compatible devices and services. The UserAccess emerges from the AAL4ALL project, being a demonstration of its validity. The UserAccess architecture, implementation, interfaces and test scenario are presented, along with the sensor platform specially developed for the AAL4ALL project. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Nowadays there is an increase of location-aware mobile applications. However, these applications only retrieve location with a mobile device's GPS chip. This means that in indoor or in more dense environments these applications don't work properly. To provide location information everywhere a pedestrian Inertial Navigation System (INS) is typically used, but these systems can have a large estimation error since, in order to turn the system wearable, they use low-cost and low-power sensors. In this work a pedestrian INS is proposed, where force sensors were included to combine with the accelerometer data in order to have a better detection of the stance phase of the human gait cycle, which leads to improvements in location estimation. Besides sensor fusion an information fusion architecture is proposed, based on the information from GPS and several inertial units placed on the pedestrian body, that will be used to learn the pedestrian gait behavior to correct, in real-time, the inertial sensors errors, thus improving location estimation.

The Ambient Assisted Living area has spawned several projects that aim to help the user on his/her daily activities. The AAL4ALL (ambient assisted living for all) project aims to develop a unified ecosystem using fully compatible devices and services. The UserAccess platform is part of the AAL4ALL and has as a goal to provide assistance to a type of actor that is commonly forgotten in the Ambient Assisted Living area, the caregiver. In this paper we propose an architecture for processing endoscopic procedures results. The goal is to create a complete system capable of processing any type of endoscopic multimedia results, in order to overcome the most common issues in the endoscopic domain (e.g. video’s long-duration, gastroenterologist's possible difficulty to maintain the focus and efficiency during the viewing process, imperfections in images/videos). It was this scenario that led to the conception of the MIVprocessing solution, which will address these and other problems, providing an added value to the elaboration of diagnoses. The MIVprocessing is composed of five tasks: Video Summarization (elimination of the "non-informative" frames);Pre-Processing (correction/improvement of the frames);Pre-Detection;Segmentation;and Feature Extraction and Classification. The idea is to create a framework that brings together the capabilities of different but at the same time complementary concepts (e.g. image and signal processing, machine learning, computer vision). This conjugation applied to the endoscopic domain provides a set of features capable of improving the gastroenterologist's activities during and after the procedure. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.
