Background: Due to greater infection susceptibility, sepsis is the main cause of death in burn patients. Quick diagnosis and patient stratification, early and appropriated antimicrobial therapy, and focus control are crucial for patients’survival. On the other hand, superfluous extension of therapy is associated with adverse events and arousal of microbial resistance. The use of biomarkers, necessarily coupled with close clinical examination, may predict outcomes, stratifying patients who need more intensive care, and monitor the efficacy of antimicrobial therapy, allowing faster de-escalation or stop, reducing the development of resistance and possibly the financial burden, without increasing mortality. The aim of this work is to check the suitability of procalcitonin (PCT) to fulfill these goals in a large sample of septic burn patients. Methods: One hundred and one patients, with 15% or more of total body surface area (TBSA) burned, admitted from January 2011 to December 2014 at Coimbra Burns Unit (CBU), in Portugal were included in the sample. All patients had a diagnosis of sepsis, according to the American Burn Association (ABA) criteria. The sample was factored by survival (68 survivors and 33 non-survivors). The maximum value of PCT in each day was used for statistical analysis. Data were summarized by location measures (mean, median, minimum, maximum, quartiles) and dispersion measures (standard error and range measures). Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS?23.0 IBM? for Windows?. Results: There were statistically significant differences between PCT levels of patients from the survivor and non-survivor groups during the first and the last weeks of hospitalization as well as during the first week after sepsis suspicion, being slightly higher during this period. During the first 7 days of antimicrobial therapy, PCT was always higher in the non-survivor, still without reaching statistical significance, but when the analysis was extended till the 15th

Let G = (V (G), E (G)) be an (n, m)-graph and X a nonempty proper subset of V (G). Let Xc = V (G) \X. The edge density of X in G is given by (Equation Presented) where EX (G) is the set of edges in G with one end in X and the other in Xc. The Laplacian spread of a graph is the difference between the greatest Laplacian eigenvalue and the algebraic connectivity. In this paper, we use the edge density of some nonempty proper subsets of vertices in G to establish new lower bounds for the Laplacian spread. Also, using some known numerical inequalities some lower bounds for the Laplacian spread of a graph with a prescribed degree sequence are presented. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. ℓ-boson stars are static, spherical, multifield self-gravitating solitons. They are asymptotically flat, finite energy solutions of Einstein’s gravity minimally coupled to an odd number of massive, complex scalar fields. A previous study assessed the stability of ℓ-boson stars under spherical perturbations, finding that there are both stable and unstable branches of solutions, as for single-field boson stars (ℓ=0). In this work we probe the stability of ℓ-boson stars against nonspherical perturbations by performing numerical evolutions of the Einstein-Klein-Gordon system, with a 3D code. For the timescales explored, the ℓ-boson stars belonging to the spherical stable branch do not exhibit measurable growing modes. We find, however, evidence of zero modes; that is, nonspherical perturbations that neither grow nor decay. This suggests the branching off toward a larger family of equilibrium solutions: we conjecture that ℓ-boson stars are the enhanced isometry point of a larger family of static (and possibly stationary), nonspherical multifield self-gravitating solitons.

We discuss the search for a CP-odd scalar decaying into gauge bosons in the frameworks of a CP-conserving two-Higgs doublet model (2HDM) and of a 2HDM extended with a vectorlike quark (VLQ) at the Large Hadron Collider and at a future 100 TeV collider. The rate of decay of a pseudoscalar to Z bosons could be important to ascertain the CP nature of the scalars in the model. In the 2HDM A→ZZ will be extremely hard to detect even at a future 100 TeV pp collider while in the 2HDM+VLQ this decay can be probed even during the present LHC run. We further discuss all decays of the pseudoscalar into gauge bosons at the LHC and at a future 100 TeV collider in the alignment limit where the lightest scalar is the 125 GeV Higgs with SM-like couplings to the fermions and gauge bosons.

Stabilities for a class of higher order integro-differential equations

This work is devoted to analyse different kinds of stabilities for higher order integro-differential equations within appropriate metric spaces. We will consider the σ-semi-Hyers-Ulam stability which is a new kind of stability somehow between the Hyers-Ulam and the Hyers-Ulam-Rassias stabilities. Sufficient conditions are obtained in view to guarantee Hyers-Ulam, σ-semi-Hyers-Ulam and Hyers-Ulam-Rassias stabilities for such a class of integro-differential equations. We will be considering finite and infinite intervals as integration domains. Among the used techniques, we have fixed point arguments and generalizations of the Bielecki metric.

In this paper we explore some results concerning the spread of the line and the total graph of a given graph. In particular, it is proved that for an (n,m) connected graph G with m > n . 4 the spread of G is less than or equal to the spread of its line graph, where the equality holds if and only if G is regular bipartite. A sufficient condition for the spread of the graph not be greater than the signless Laplacian spread for a class of non bipartite and non regular graphs is proved. Additionally, we derive an upper bound for the spread of the line graph of graphs on n vertices having a vertex (edge) connectivity less than or equal to a positive integer k. Combining techniques of interlacing of eigenvalues, we derive lower bounds for the Laplacian and signless Laplacian spread of the total graph of a connected graph. In this paper we deal with circulant and partitioned into n-by-n circulant blocks matrices and introduce spectral results concerning this class of matrices. The problem of finding lists of complex numbers corresponding to a set of eigenvalues of a nonnegative block matrix with circulant blocks is treated. Along the paper we call realizable list if its elements are the eigenvalues of a nonnegative matrix. The Guo's index λ0 of a realizable list is the minimum spectral radius such that the list (up to the initial spectral radius) together with λ0 is realizable. The Guo's index of block circulant matrices with circulant blocks is obtained, and in consequence, necessary and sufficient conditions concerning the NIEP, Nonnegative Inverse Eigenvalue Problem, for the realizability of some spectra are given. Time series analysis by state space models applied to a water quality data in Portugal

Time series analysis by state space models provide a very flexible tool for analysing dynamic phenomena and evolving systems, and have significantly contributed to extending the classical domains of application of statistical time series analysis. In this study, in the context of a surface water quality monitoring problem in a river basin, it is proposed an approach for the structural time series analysis based on the state space models associated to the Kalman filter. The main goals are to analyse and evaluate the temporal evolution of the environmental time series, and to identify trends or possible changes in the water quality on a dynamic monitoring procedure. The data concerns the River Ave’s hydrological basin located in the Northwest of Portugal, where monitoring has become a priority in water quality planning and management because its water has been in a state of obvious environmental degradation for many years. As a result, the watershed is now monitored by seven monitoring sites distributed along the River Ave and its main streams. For the modeling process we consider the monthly dissolved oxygen concentration dataset between January 1999 and January 2014. The framework of the state space models shows versatility to incorporate unobserved components, such as trends, cycles and seasonals, that have a natural interpretation and represent the salient features of the environmental time series under investigation. From the environmental point of view, the proposed approach allows to obtain pertinent findings concerning water surface quality interpretation and change point, thus highlighting the potential value of this type of analysis, and it is also relevant to identify unanticipated changes that are important in the management process and for the assessment of water quality.

First and second fundamental solutions of the time-fractional telegraph equation of order 2α

In this work we obtain the first and second fundamental solutions of the multidimensional time-fractional equation of order 2α, α ∈]0, 1], where the two time-fractional derivatives are in the Caputo sense. We obtain representations of the fundamental solutions in terms of Hankel transform, double Mellin-Barnes integral, and H-functions of two variables. As an application, the fundamental solutions are used to solve a Cauchy problem, and to study telegraph process with Brownian time.

Quantum splines are curves in a Hilbert space or, equivalently, in the corresponding Hilbert projective space, which generalize the notion of Riemannian cubic splines to the quantum domain. In this paper, we present a generalization of this concept to general density matrices with a Hamiltonian approach and using a geometrical formulation of quantum mechanics. Our main goal is to formulate an optimal control problem for a nonlinear system on u∗(n) which corresponds to the variational problem of quantum splines. The corresponding Hamiltonian equations and interpolation conditions are derived.
