A new generation of curation services provides users with a set of tools to manually curate and manage topical collections of content. However, given curation is ultimately a manual effort, it still requires significant effort on the part of the curator both in terms of collecting and managing content. We are interested in providing additional assistance to users in their curation tasks, in particular when it comes to efficiently adding content to their collection, and examine recommender systems in an effort to automate this task. We examine a number of recommendation strategies using live-user data from the popular *** curation service. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

In this paper we describe a novel approach to case-based product recommendation. It is novel because it does not leverage the usual static, feature-based, purely similarity-driven approaches of traditional case-based recommenders. Instead we harness experiential cases, which are automatically mined from user generated reviews, and we use these as the basis for a form of recommendation that emphasises similarity and sentiment. We test our approach in a realistic product recommendation setting by using live-product data and user reviews. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

In this paper we describe a generic approach to modeling user reputation in online social platforms based on an underlying model of collaboration. This distinguishes our approach from more conventional reputation models which are often based around ad-hoc activity metrics. Supplementing product information with user-generated content such as ratings and reviews can help to convert browsers into buyers. As a result this type of content is now front and centre for many major e-commerce sites such as Amazon. We believe that this type of content can provide a rich source of valuable information that is useful for a variety of purposes. In this work we are interested in harnessing past reviews to support the writing of new useful reviews, especially for novice contributors. We describe how automatic topic extraction and sentiment analysis can be used to mine valuable information from user-generated reviews, to make useful suggestions to users at review writing time about features that they may wish to cover in their own reviews. We describe the results of a live-user trial to show how the resulting system is capable of delivering high quality reviews that are comparable to the best that sites like Amazon have to offer in terms of information content and helpfulness. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Within a wireless sensor networks (WSN), network topology and connectivity is one of the key elements that need to be known in order to perform fault and isolation detection. Many of the faults observed in real WSN (link change, nodes switched off and reboot), create dynamic topology;it is important to understand the occurrence of such dynamic changes within network topologies as they can result in network partitions, isolation and a general degradation of network performance. Intellectus constitutes a first step towards automated online dynamic topology detection and classification of faults. Control change is the key of the Intellectus methodology, and involves each node monitoring local state change and communicating this to the user side in order that localized changes may be fused to derive macro level network understanding. Spatial and temporal correlations from the local decision of every sensor nodes can provide a global overview of the changes in the topology network. © 2013 IEEE.

The world of web search is changing. Mainstream search engines like Google and Bing are adding social signals to conventional query-based services while social networks like Twitter and Facebook are adding query-based search to sharing-based services. Our search and discovery system, Yokie, harnesses the wisdom of the crowd of communities of Twitter users to create indexes of proto-content (or recently shared content) that is typically not yet indexed by mainstream search engines. The system includes an architecture [13] for a range of contextual queries and ranking strategies beyond standard relevance. In this paper, we focus on evaluating Yokie's ability to retrieve timely, relevant and exclusive results with which users interacted and found useful, compared to other standard web services. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Many routing protocols have advanced the Wire- less sensor Network(WSN) paradigm with each new method offering unique ways to maximise Quality of Service(QoS) while minimising energy cost to the network. Tree routing is a well examined method with a proven record in offering a high level of service with trees constructed to fulfil a particular routing objective defined by a chosen metric. The tree structure can be maintained with low overall network overhead but exhibits a weakness with regard to load balancing. Without effective load balancing particular nodes in the network may be subject to excessive network load, leading to uneven energy consumption in the network. This in turn can lead to an unwanted scenario of premature node failure. Neighbourhood metrics is presented in this paper as a means to preserve network objectives while achieving improved load distribution in a tree type routing structure. Neighbourhood metrics offer a framework for expand- ing on currently used metrics to include information on the quality of a nodes neighbourhood in addition to the current forwarding route. Neighbourhood metrics is compared to the current state of the art in the form of the Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks(RPL) implementation using the direct Expected Transmissions(ETX) metric. Neighbourhood metrics exhibits improved load distribution in a number of open public testbeds. © 2013 IEEE.

Ambiently and automatically maintaining a lifelog is an activity that may help individuals track their lifestyle, learning, health and productivity. In this paper we mo- tivate and discuss the technical challenges of developing real-world lifelogging solutions, based on seven years of experience. The gathering, organisation, retrieval and presentation challenges of large-scale lifelogging are dis- cussed and we show how this can be achieved and the benefits that may accrue. A diverse range of faults and errors can occur within a wireless sensor network (WSN), and it is difficult to predict and classify them, especially post-deployment within the environment. Current monitoring and debugging techniques prove deficient for systems which contain bugs characteristic of both distributed and embedded systems. The challenge that faces researchers is how to comprehensively address network, node and data level anomalies within WSNs through the creation, collection and aggregation of local state information while minimizing additional network traffic and node energy expenditure. This paper introduces Intellectus which seeks to develop sensor motes that are both self and environment aware. The sensor node relies on local information in order to monitor itself and that of its neighborhood, by adding a learning approach based upon perceived events and their associated frequency.
