Evaluation of a novel alginate gel dressing: Cytotoxicity to fibroblastsin vitroand foreign-body reaction in pig skinin vivo

Calcium alginate dressings have beneficial effects on wound healing by providing a moist wound environment. However, cytotoxicity and the nonbiodegradable nature of calcium alginate dressings induce unresolved chronic foreign-body reaction. In this study, a novel freeze-dried alginate gel dressing (AGA-100) low in calcium ions was evaluated for cytotoxicity to L929 cells in vitro and in full-thickness pig wounds in vivo . Cytotoxicity testing on L929 cells showed the cytocompatibility of AGA-100 extracts, while extracts from Kaltostat, a well-established alginate dressing, induced cytopathic effects. In an in vivo study using pigskin, AGA-100, Kaltostat, and gauze were applied on 1-in-diameter circular full-thickness wounds on the back of pigs and the time course of wound closure was evaluated. Kaltostat and gauze dressings were used as controls. For histologic evaluation, wound tissue was harvested on day 18. AGA-100-treated wounds showed rapid wound closure compared to control wounds on day 15. Foreign-body reaction was marked in Kaltostat- and gauze-treated wounds, and differed significantly from AGA-100-treated wounds. Based on these data, AGA-100 could reduce the cytotoxicity to fibroblasts and foreign-body reaction that have been observed with currently available calcium alginate dressings; it was also found to be useful as an alginate dressing. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Selective chemical etching and atomic force microscope (AFM) examination has been performed to delineate two-dimensional (2-d) dopants profiles of p/n-type well and junction areas. Selectivity strongly depended on the types of dopants and the ratio of etching solutions. Calibration showed that the carrier concentrations in both p/n-type regions could be delineated down to a level of ∼1×1017/cm3. The AFM-induced profiles were compared with the calculated data provided by the 2-d process simulators such as TrIM and SUPrEM-IV.

The Effects of the Addition of CF 4 , Cl 2 , and N 2 TO O 2 ECr Plasma on the ETCH rate, Selectivity and Etched Profile of ruO 2 Film

In this study, we investigated the effects of the addition of CF4, Cl2, and N2 gases to oxygen electron cyclotron resonance (ECr) plasma on the reactive ion etching (rIE) properties of ruO2 film such as etch rate, selectivity, and etched profile. The concentration of the etching species in the plasma was analyzed with an optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and a quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS). The etch product was also examined with QMS. p]The addition of a small amount of CF4, Cl2, or N2 to the O2 plasma increases the concentration of oxygen radicals and accordingly increases the etch rate of the rUO2 films appreciably. The etch rate of the ruO2 film was enhanced more with the addition of a small amount of CF4 and CI2 than with the addition of N2. On the contrary, the etched profile obtained in O2/N2 plasma was superior, without any damaged layer at the sidewall, to O2/CF4 and O2/Cl2 plasma. The selectivity of ruO2 to Si)2 mask was over 20:1 for each of the additive gas proportion at which the etch rate was maximum for each plasma system.

Error tracking mode AC current waveform control method for three-phase self-commutated voltage source power converters

He joined Tokyo Electric Power Co. Ltd. in April of the same year. He was engaged in maintenance and inspection work of protective relays at Shinagawa and Ohi power stations from 1978 to 1980. After working on investigation of new technologies he was engaged in the research and development project of sodium sulfur battery systems for customers and networks. He is currently a Deputy Head of Power Electronics Department of Power Engineering R&D at Power Technology Center. He is a member of the IEEE EPE Association and Electrochemical Association.

A novel design theory for a three-phase self-commutated power conversion system (PCS) to perform as an ac current source is proposed. In this new ac current waveform control-method termed error tracking mode, the switching instructions of main devices are decided only by the error function of ac current at every data sampling time that comes in a constant period. The performance is theoretically evaluated. Simulation by SPICE also is executed and the characteristics are inspected. Error tracking mode has the following attractive features. It can treat two arbitrary current waveforms as target functions of two-phase arbitrary ac currents. The error between actual ac current value and the objective function value can be controlled and guaranteed to be less than an arbitrary value, which is given beforehand. All control components can be digitized. The minimum continuous on and off time of main devices is guaranteed in advance. No special starting control is necessary because actual ac currents are guaranteed to start tracking the target functions automatically. Error tracking mode makes contributions to improve precision in current control and to reduce current harmonics of self-commutated voltage source power converters.

Studies were made on the effects of braking force distribution, on a vehicle's lateral and longitudinal directions. The studies were made on distribution on non-linear regions, under combined high lateral acceleration and deceleration conditions, using the value of the yaw moment versus the side slip angle. consequently, a method for obtaining optimum braking force distribution was found. controlling the lateral distribution Of the braking force on the front wheels was found to be effective for the improvement of vehicle stability, while that on the rear wheels was found to be effective for extending the limit of vehicle motion. Therefore, controlling the lateral distribution of the braking force on both the front and rear wheels achieves the two effects mentioned above. Simulation tests were carried out to confirm these effects in terms of turning performance and controllability to avoiding obstacles in emergency situations.

(S'75–S'79–M'79–SM'86) received the Ph.D. degree from Southern Methodist University Dallas TX in 1979. He spent the next two years working as a Visiting Professor in Egypt after which he moved to Ottawa Canada in 1982. He assumed teaching and research positions in Carleton and Manitoba Univerities and later moved to Concordia University Montreal Canada in 1983 where he is now a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He has published numerous papers in IEEE and international journals in the areas of spread spectrum and networking. He is a well-known expert in these areas and serves as a consultant to many companies. His current research interests include wide-band metropolitan networks switching architectures and performance of on-board multibeam satellites acquisitionless CDMA networks code distribution and orthogonalization of CDMA signals responsive congestion control for ATM-based networks ARQ techniques and investigation of the novel SUGAR CDMA systems in fading channels. Dr. Elhakeem is a Senior Member of the Canadian Electrical Engineering Society and Armed Forces Association. In this paper, we study the performance of a prioritized on-board baseband switch in conjunction with a multibeam satellite handling integrated services. The services considered for the analysis include voice, video, file transfer and interactive data. The prioritized switch uses both input and output buffering, switch speed-up as well as a two-phase head-of-line resolution algorithm, in order to reduce the buffer loss while maintaining acceptable user delays. The minimum required buffer capacity and switch speed-up for each service in a prioritized environment are found under uniform traffic conditions. It is shown that under uniform traffic conditions, only minimal buffering and switch speed-up are needed even for the lowest priority users. The performance dependence on the switch size is also substantially reduced with head of line resolution and buffering even in a prioritized environment.

We introduce a control method of container crane using fuzzy control to transport the load correctly, rapidly, safely, and without swing. First, anti-swing fuzzy control rules are made from skilled operators' experience. Next, traveling acceleration time is calculated with considering the position of obstructions and rope length at the maximum traveling speed. Finally, when trolley decelerates, we adjust the traveling time of constant speed section by refering swing angle and change rate of swing angle at the beginning of deceleration. We also investigate the operation of container crane by using model experimental apparatus.< >

A robotic manipulator is usually a very complicated system whose dynamics is too computationally time consuming for real-time control. The authors propose general criteria for designing an ideal robot whose dynamics is very much simpler than that of the conventional one. In this paper, dynamic characteristics of an ideally designed robot are investigated. The design guidelines were applied to a 6-degree-of-freedom PUMA 560 robot. Based upon the design concept dynamic equations of the redesigned robot were derived. Utilizing these equations, dynamic characteristics of the redesigned robot are investigated with respect to the computation efforts required, variation of the inertia matrix, joint input torque characteristics, and couplings between the joints. A detailed comparison study is also made between the redesigned and conventional robots.
