Oil-based mud (OBM) is the first choice for complex deep wells due to its advantages of high-temperature resistance, good lubrication and borehole stability. But barite sagging under ultra-high temperature during the long-time stationary completion operation may lead to serious problems in ultra-deep wells, for instance, pipe sticking, density variation and well control problems. In this paper, the influence of high-temperature and high-pressure (HTHP) on the performance of oil-based completion fluid was studied, and a model of rheological parameters was established with HTHP static sag law. The barite sagging stability was evaluated by a high temperature (220°C) and high pressure (100MPa) sag instrument. The results indicated that rM6 value and static shearing force were the main factors of affecting the settlement stability. The viscosity of the completion fluid significantly decreased with the increase of temperature, but increased with the increase of pressure. In addition, the relationship was also studied between HTHP rheology and atmospheric pressure rheology at 50°C. The results showed that when rM6 value was kept above 10, the sag stability factor (SF) of oil-based completion fluid was less than 0.52 at 190°C for 10 days, which proved a good high-temperature sag stability. Furthermore, the anti-high temperature property of oil-based completion fluid was improved through enhancing the temperature-resistance of the additives. And the high-temperature-resistant organic soil was introduced to raise the rM6 value and the static shearing force. Based on these solutions, the barite sag under high temperature of the oil-based completion fluid was prevented during drilling and completion operation in ultra-high temperature wells. The oil-based completion fluid was successfully used in Well Keshen 17 (175°C, 7475 m) in Kuche piedmont structure and TT 1 well (210°C, 6500 m) in Sichuan basin. For fractured low permeability reservoirs, there are challenges to enhance oil recovery after water flooding with high water cut contents. Because of unsatisfied surfactant polymer flooding, we explored the integrated EOr techniques of conformance control treatment and surfactant flooding. This paper analyzes the results of pilot tests with four injectors and 16 producers and concludes the effectiveness of integrated EOr techniques. Based on lab results of conformance control core flooding tests and surfactant based chemical EOr reservoir core flooding experiments, we did pilot simulation studies to develop pilot design parameters. Then through history match and detailed compositional simulation, we made EOr integrated technology design and compared several injection scenarios by predicting the potential performance. Finally, an integrated EOr technique with two conformance control treatments and surfactant flooding was selected and executed for three injectors in the interested pilot block. For the fourth injector, only surfactant flooding was used to compare. Lab results of conformance control core flooding tests showed the efficiency of plugging and a good fluid diversion performance of conformance polymer agents. Surfactant based chemical EOr reservoir core flooding experiments resulted from 70% to 98% residual crude oil recovery. The experimental data obtained was implemented in a numerical simulator model to find the potential incremental recovery associated with conformance control treatments and chemical flooding. A refined sector model used to further evaluate the effect of them. Positive simulation results boost pilot tests. Five fluid injection slugs including the cleaning slug, pre-flooding slug, near wellbore plugging slug, in deep conformance control slug, and surfactant flooding slug were run for three injectors in the range of eight to ten months of treatment. Temperature and pressure are important factors affecting the density of drilling fluid. As exploration and development gradually progress to deep layers and deep waters, formation temperature and pressure are getting higher and higher. Ignoring the influence of temperature and pressure on the density of drilling fluid will lead to large deviations in drilling hydraulic calculations and increase the probability of accidents such as lost circulation and overflow. In this paper, the density change of a set of field oil-based drilling fluids is measured through laboratory experiments. The temperature range is 20-180°C, and the pressure range is 0.1 MPa-180 MPa. A high-temperature and high-pressure density prediction model for oil-based drilling fluids is established based on the weighted linear regression method. Based on the established model, the high-temperature and high-pressure density of the experimental drilling fluid is predicted. The results show that the prediction error is less than 5%, and the calculation accuracy is high, which can guide on-site operation and construction. © 2024 IEEE.

Horizontal well technology is a favorable means for the efficient development of "deep, low permeability, offshore, unconventional" and other complex reservoirs, and its key is to improve the drilling rate of the target geological body. Based on the analysis of the business process and requirements of geosteering, aiming at the geological characteristics of China's continental shale, carbonate and glutenite reservoirs, the key technical problems such as geo-steering based stratigraphic structure model modeling, main LWd instrument curve forward modeling, interactive geological model editing, dynamic extraction of stratigraphic parameters, multi-information fusion seismic inversion and so on have been solved, and a full vector geosteering comprehensive analysis software named OneSteer was developed. The software is applied to the field geo-steering analysis of carbonate reservoir in southwest of China and shale reservoirs in Xinjiang oilfields, which improves the drilling encounter rate, reduces the drilling risk, improves the drilling efficiency, and achieves satisfactory results. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

With the application of electrical explosion technology in the oil industry, such as plugging removal, wax removal and micro-cracks generation near the wellbore zone, the impact of shock wave generated by the electrical explosion on cement sheath cannot be ignored. To study the effect of electrical explosion downhole application on the integrity of cement sheath during the operation, a numerical simulation was used. A composite model of casing-cement sheath-rock is established in AUTOdYN. The propagation process of shock waves in the composite and the damage to cement sheath are studied. The results show that the shock wave propagates through the perforation hole in the liquid and keeps a high pressure in the perforated area. In the nonperforated area, the shock wave decays greatly after passing through the casing pipe. When the cement sheath and rock are subjected to the shock waves, the damage area extends outward from the perforation hole. The cement sheath and rock are mainly subjected to the tensile and shear damage by the shock waves. What is more, the casing deformation caused by shock waves may also contribute to the damage of cement sheath behind the casing. Copyright © 2022, International Petroleum technology Conference.

Carbonate rocks are an important oil and gas reservoir rock. Conical PdC (Polycrystalline diamond Compact) cutter, as a special shaped PdC cutter, can significantly improve the rate of penetration (rOP) in hard formations. However, the breakage characteristics and failure mode of the conical PdC cutter penetrating carbonate rock is unclear. A series of single cutter penetration tests were carried out with the conical and conventional PdC cutters. The surface morphology of broken pit and specific energy were analyzed. The conical cutter caused brittle damage on the rock around the broken pit at the rake angle of 10 and 20 degrees. The results of the numerical model based on the cohesive element method show that the conical cutter produce the significant tensile damage on the rock at the rake angle of 10 and 20 degrees. The tensile capacity of the conical cutter is stronger than that of the conventional cutter. The research findings of this work offer insights into the breakage process and failure mode of carbonate rock by the conical cutter. Copyright 2024 ArMA, American rock Mechanics Association.

recent years, both exploration and development have made considerable progress in the duverney block shale gas in Canada. However, technical problems exposed in horizontal drilling engineering need to be optimized: 1) Loss is common in shallow formations;2) High downhole friction torque, low rOP and drilling cuttings accumulation in long horizontal well section;3) Borehole instability leads to hanger or packer failure;4) drill bits and PdM have short servicing life and low efficiency. Optimization comes from three aspects: (1) Based on previous drilling experience and latest formation condition and development requirement, we design a new well profile for the block taking into drilling safety and further development account;(2) Optimize strong inhibitive, easy-maintenance and high cutting-carrying capacity OBM to ensure the safety requirements in the ultra-long open hole section;(3) BHA and parameters optimization. Optimize drill bit with high-abrasiveness and axial efficiency according to logging data, drillability and UCS. Upgrade conventional PdM into high-performance PdM with even-wall thickness. By means of simulation and calculation, drilling parameters suitable for duverney block has been optimized. Based on the optimization above, a stable and efficient well profile has been improved solving hanger failure on-site efficiently and complete with composite casing design (4-1/2 inch plus 5 inch) in reservoir section;a 90/10 oil-water ratio OBM has been optimized and applied onsite;Combined with high performance PdC bit and even-wall PdM as well as optimized drilling parameters, higher rOP and longer horizontal section have been achieved. The optimization has made successful field application results:(1) Completion depth has been deepened gradually, from 18,080 ft in 2013 to 23,208 ft at present, with an increase of 28.3%;(2) Horizontal section length has been increasing dramatically, from 6,190 ft in 2013 to 10,301 ft at present, with an increase of 66.4%;(3) Th

Underground coal gasification (UCG) technology integrates three processes: well construction, coal mining and gasification. It not only overcomes the safety problems of existing mine coal mining, but also avoids the pollution of waste gas, waste water and waste residue in the process of surface coal gasification of traditional coal mining. It has the advantages of low gas production cost, high safety and good environmental benefits. However, effective temperature control technology of production wellbore still needs to be developed. Based on the annulus spray method and the combination of insulated oil pipe and spray device, a set of high-temperature gas spray cooling scheme is developed by using NASA variable specific heat calculation formula, considering the variation of specific heat value of main components of high-temperature mixture with temperature, and the finite element model of production wellbore is established by using commercial software (CFX), The temperature field and pressure field of production wellbore are simulated and analyzed. The analysis results show that the developed spray cooling scheme can effectively control the production wellbore temperature, achieve the design goals of slightly lower than 350 ℃ when the high-temperature gas is output to the ground and no gasification of annulus cooling water. The research methods and results have important practical significance for promoting the development of underground coal gasification process and even engineering application. © 2023 57th US rock Mechanics/Geomechanics Symposium.
