A novel methodology for estimating the optimum pole allocation of allpass group delay equalizers with real coefficients is introduced. A computer-aided algorithm, whose input is this initial estimate, is developed. Results verifying the effectiveness of the proposed approach are presented and compared to other procedures described in the literature.

In this article, we derive conditions for existence of zero-forcing multiuser detectors which achieve perfect reconstruction of the transmitted symbols. Compared to similar works in the literature, the derived conditions allow a reduction in the length of the equalizer filters, while imposing no constraints on the channel order and on the order of the precoder filters. Since the analysis is carried out in time domain, time varying filters are also considered.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a transmultiplex (TMUX) technique characterized by a low computational complexity and reduced inter-symbol/inter-carrier interferences (ISI/ICI). Recently, new TMUX structures based on multicarrier modulation have been proposed aiming at even better performances. Such new structures include a cosine-modulated filter bank (CMFB) and a modified DFT filter bank (MDFTB). This work introduces design techniques for the CMFB and MDFTB structures with a large number of subbands (several hundreds or more), zero ISI, and small levels of ICI for most practical applications. The design is based on the concept of an Mth-band Nyquist filter, which inherently yields zero ISI and a highly selective filter bank, and in the FRM structure enabling one to synthesize FIR filters with a significantly reduced number of coefficients. The prototype filter is optimized to minimize the resulting ICI. A design example is included to illustrate the benefits of the proposed technique in filter bank applications demanding a very large number of channels.

Subband adaptive filtering techniques have been recently developed for a number of applications, such as acoustic echo cancellation and wideband active noise control. Such applications require adaptive filters with hundreds of taps, resulting in high computational complexity and low convergence rate for LMS based algorithms. For fullband systems, a variety of adaptive algorithms, which improve the adaptation convergence rate, have been developed. Most of them (such as the affine projection algorithm), however, present larger complexity than the conventional LMS algorithm. Such computational load can be reduced by making use of subband processing techniques. Considering these matters, we apply the affine projection algorithm (APA) in a recently proposed subband adaptive filter structure.

Subband adaptive filtering techniques have been recently developed for a number of applications, such as acoustic echo cancellation and wideband active noise control. Considering these matters, we apply the affine projection algorithm (APA) in a recently proposed subband adaptive filter structure.

Designs of shunt and series active filter controllers are presented in systems that have voltage and current with unbalances and/or harmonics. The control strategy considers the presence of harmonics and unbalances simultaneously in the system voltage and load current. Although fundaments of the instantaneous active and reactive power theory (the pq Theory) are used to design the controller, it is not directly used, since the Clarke Transformation (abc to αβo transformation) is avoided. These fundaments and a method of minimization, together with a robust synchronizing circuit (PLL control circuit), are combined to form a concise control strategy. The shunt control strategy provides current compensation, such that the compensated current drawn from the network is sinusoidal, balanced and minimized. In other words, the compensated current corresponds to the active component (that component in phase with the system voltage) of the fundamental positive-sequence current of the load. The series control strategy provides compensated voltages in such a way that the voltage delivered to the critical load is sinusoidal and balanced (it comprises only the fundamental positive-sequence component). Simulation results are presented to validate the proposed control strategies. © 2003 IEEE.

This paper presents a control strategy for a unified power quality conditioner. This control strategy is used in three-phase three-wire systems. The UPQC device combines a shunt-active filter together with a series-active filter in a back-to-back configuration, to simultaneously compensate the supply voltage and the load current. Previous works presented a control strategy for shunt-active filter that guarantees sinusoidal, balanced and minimized source currents even if under unbalanced and/or distorted system voltages, also known as "sinusoidal fryze currents". Then, this control strategy was extended to develop a dual control strategy for series-active filter. Now, this paper develops the integration principles of shunt current compensation and series voltages compensation, both based on instantaneous active and non-active powers, directly calculated from a-b-c phase voltages and line currents. Simulation results are presented to validate the proposed UPQC control strategy. © 2003 IEEE.

This paper extends the idea of "multiple resonance networks" to networks where a series of grounded inductors are coupled through a network of capacitances. The networks discussed have the property of transferring all the energy initially stored in a set of capacitors connected to a node of the network, or in an inductor, to another set of capacitors connected to another node, or to another inductor, through a lossless linear transient.
