In this work we present one efficient structure based on Wiener filter to perform channel equalization in a block communications system. We show that it is possible to derive a structure to estimate a block of transmitted symbols that use the same Wiener filter to estimate all symbols in the block. In terms of bit error rate, experimental results show that the system performs better than Discrete MultiTone (DMT) for a wide range of signal-to-noise ratios. A multistage Wiener filter recently introduced was used to implement a reduced-rank version of the equalizer, and the performance of the system was shown to remain almost unchanged for rank values much smaller than the signal autocovariance matrix rank.

A non-uniform subband adaptive structure with critical sampling of the subband signals is derived. With the assumption of non-overlapping between non-adjacent analysis filters, the resulting structure yields exact modeling of an arbitrary FIR system. An LMS-type adaptation algorithm, which minimizes the sum of the subband squared-errors, is obtained for updating the coefficients of the proposed structure, resulting in significant convergence rate improvement for colored input signals when compared to the fullband LMS algorithm. Computer simulations illustrate the convergence behavior of the proposed non-uniform subband adaptive filter in the applications of system identification and acoustic echo cancellation.

This paper shows how switched-current filters can be derived from passive filters obtained by the unbalancing of doubly terminated LC lattice structures. The process is similar to what would be done for the simulation of more conventional ladder structures, but the use of lattice prototypes allows the realization in an almost physically symmetrical structure. A comparation of sensitivity characteristics between second-generation and component-simulation switched-current filters is also shown.

We propose an alternative technique to the implementation of discrete wavelet multitone systems based on fractional-delay filter banks. The technique yields orthogonal subband signals and allows independent equalization for each subband at the receiver end. When compared to systems employing cosine-modulated filter banks, our technique shows better performance in terms of bit-error rate, particularly for low signal-to-noise ratios and highly selective channels.

Subband adaptive filtering has been recently studied by a large number of researchers. Subband structures with non-critical sampling of the subband signals have been frequently employed in order to avoid aliasing effects. Recently, new subband structures with critical sampling have been developed in which the aliasing between adjacent subbands is completely cancelled. In this paper, the convergence behavior and the computational complexity of oversampled and critically sampled subband structures are compared for acoustic echo cancelling application. A theoretical convergence analysis is presented, from which the convergence rates can be estimated.

This work shows an Artificial Neural Network using the Kohonen Layer architecture in a modified approach to support supervised learning, and the evaluation of its performance in the classification of QRS complexes of the Electrocardiogram (ECG) from patients with cardiac arrhythmias. A second aim of this study was to investigate the ability of ANN to classify QRS complexes when the original data samples are used as input variables. The classifier was developed and tested with the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database. The obtained results become equivalent to the most sophisticated methods in the literature when input data are properly pre-processed and the final classifier is allowed to adapt to the normal pattern of each analyzed patient.

This work aims to apply the discrete biorthogonal wavelet transform and adaptive arithmetic encoding (AAE) for ECG data compression. Using the 9-7 linear phase biorthogonal wavelet and symmetric extension at the signal boundaries, the number of subband samples required for synthesis becomes the same as the ones of the original data. The encoding EZW algorithm was used to explore the similarities between subbands, and AAE to represent the generated symbols with a rate close to its entropy. Such method was applied to MIT-BIH Arryhythmia Database (24 Hs, 2 channels of data sampled with a 360 Hz with 11 bits), for different compression ratios (CR). Fixing CR to 12:1, the data shape is preserved. The obtained PRD, 3.58±1.56% (mean±standard deviation), indicates the suitability of the method.

In this paper we describe a software tool (Wideband CDMA Simulation Tool for Third Generation Mobile Communications, WAST3G) that simulates a mobile communication system based on UMTS. It can be used as a test-bed for new algorithms and methods for deconvolution, demodulation, despreading, equalization and detection, aiming on 3G systems performance and technics. It can also be used as a learning tool for the operation of wireless communications systems in general, and 3G systems in particular, because it implements all necessary steps for a mobile station that was 'turned off' to achieve communication, including synchronization and system registration procedures. All these features make WAST3G a very powerful tool for academic and industrial purposes. © 2000 EUSIPCO.
