This paper addresses the design of a perturbation-based extremum seeking control (ESC) method to maintain the oil production around the optimum point of the well-performance curve in gas lifted wells. The method uses periodic perturbation which is injected into the plant with intention to extract the information about the gradient of the well-performance curve. A simple nonlinear dynamic model is proposed and the essential dynamics of the Eikrem's model are captured, i.e., the transient behavior and the optimal steady state well- performance curve. Based on this simple model, a pre-compensation is developed which allows the application of the ESC scheme without reducing excessively the perturbation frequency. The control performance is evaluated via numerical simulations using an appropriate environment for modelling, simulation and optimization (EMSO) of process dynamic systems.

Direction of Arrival (DOA) estimation of gunshots is an important asset to law-enforcement agencies and defense forces, for shooter localization is key to improving public and troop safety. Solutions vary according to scenario, application, and available resources. As the distance between the firing position and the sensor array increases, as in a typical sniper scenario, signal to noise ratio decreases and the estimation degrades. This paper proposes a gunshot DoA estimation algorithm to be used with highly noisy signals. We combine exhaustive search for selecting pairs of microphones from the array to attain the best DOA estimation results and fast response time for different shooting scenarios. We are particularly interested in highly corrupted signals for which state-of-the-art algorithms fail. Experimental results from simulated and recorded gunshot signals were used to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme.

This paper presents considerations about the design and operation of electrostatic generators based on Bennet's doubler, when realized with microelectromechanics techniques. electrical models taken from mechanical analogs are used to simulate the devices in operation, with the effects of the mechanical operations and interactions with electrical forces taken into account in the models. From the simulated results, guidelines for the design of the actual systems can be obtained.

Information obtained from recorded gunshot signals can be useful for law enforcement agencies and defense forces. Direction of arrival estimation of a gunshot is an important issue in shooter localization. As the distance between the firing position and the sensor increases, signal to noise ratio decreases and this estimation degrades. In that case, some sort of pre-processing of the firing acoustic signal before the application of direction of arrival estimation algorithms becomes necessary. This paper shows that applying spectral subtraction to enhance the signal improves the results. Moreover, it is shown that further improvement is attained when employing a recently proposed data selection algorithm. The tests were carried out with simulated directions by delaying copies of a real gunshot signal and also with real gunshot signals recorded by a microphone array. © 2014 IEEE.

Diophantine equations and Fuzzy Adaptive Simulated Annealing

This work uses the Fuzzy Adaptive Simulated Annealing algorithm to solve many examples of Dio-phantine equations, offering a global optimization alternative for those ones that did not have a general method or even a closed form for their solution. The proposed method uses the built-in integer programming capabilities of Fuzzy ASA and the candidate solutions evolve in n, in contrast to the best known applications of ASA, exposing an almost unexplored feature of that paradigm. Some significant numerical results are introduced, and empirical relationships between number of independent variables and necessary number of cost function evaluations to get to solutions are presented.

This work presents a study on color-image super-resolution algorithms based on adaptive Wiener filtering, which have low computational complexity in comparison to other image resolution enhancement methods. First, the monochrome super-resolution using Wiener filtering is applied to Wavelet Transform coefficients to mitigate the effects of random noise in the low resolution images. Then, the standard and Wavelet-domain super-resolution algorithms using Wiener filtering are applied to color channels to perform the color images super-resolution. A chrominance compression method is proposed to reduce the number of operations required for estimating the high resolution image.

This work discusses some structures of electrostatic generators that can be used for energy harvesting from mechanical vibrations or rotating movement, that do not require any active control circuit for their operation. The structures use an unstable generator to bias another generator, or just variable capacitors, which form the main generator. Their action is similar to electric generators based on electrets.

This paper proposes a deconvolution technique for gunshot signals aiming at improving direction of arrival estimation and weapon recognition. When dealing with field recorded signals, reflections degrade the performance of these tasks and a signal enhancement technique is required. Our scheme improves a gunshot signal by delaying and summing its reflections. Conventional blind deconvolution schemes are not reliable when applied to impulsive signals. While other techniques impose restrictions on the signal in order to ensure stability, the one presented herein can be used without such limitations. The results of the proposed technique were tested with real gunshot signals and both applications performed well.

The diagnosability analysis proposed for Discrete Event Systems (DES) can be extended to Hybrid Systems (HS) which are systems with combined discrete and continuous behavior. In this paper, an approach for the diagnosability analysis of hybrid systems is proposed, based on the combination of the diagnosability of the underlying DES and the distinguishability of the continuous modes of the HS. The main idea is to build an observer of the underlying DES enriched with new events associated to the distinguishability of the continuous variables. A definition of diagnosability of HS and a method to verify if a HS is diagnosable, using a hybrid diagnoser called clustered diagnoser, are also introduced.
