It has been a quarter of a century since the publication of the first edition of the IEEE International Conference on computer Supported Cooperative Work in Design (CSCWD) held in 1996 in Beijing, China. Despite some attempts to empirically examine the evolution and identity of the field of CSCW and its related communities and disciplines, the scarcity of scientometric studies on the IEEE CSCWD research productivity is noteworthy. To fill this gap, this study reports on an exploratory quantitative analysis of the literature published in the IEEE CSCWD conference proceedings with the purpose of visualizing and understanding its structure and evolution for the 2001-2019 period. The findings offer valuable insights into the paper and author distribution, country and citation-level productivity indicators, degree of collaboration, and collaboration index. Through this analysis we also expect to get an initial overview of the IEEE CSCWD conference concerning the main topics being presented, most cited papers, and variances in the number of keywords, full-text views, and references.

Over the past decades, the use of digital technologies to support participatory urban planning and design has been repeatedly described as a crucial instrument and critical building block for tackling historical problems of participation in such processes. Social media, e-participation platforms, and crowdsourcing applications are examples of technologies that can involve citizens in decision-making processes and thus leverage the benefits of collective intelligence. However, despite the extensive use of social media platforms, old problems related to engagement and participation still occur in digital initiatives. Successful collaboration examples between citizens, policymakers, and strategic stakeholders are still scarce based on online social practices. This study aims to introduce a collective intelligence model, which combines crowdsourcing and social storytelling to support participatory urban planning and design from a bottom-up perspective. The paper concludes by discussing a scenario where citizens can engage in mapping, taking photos, sending ideas, or even creating collective stories about their university issues in a post-pandemic future.

Over the past decade, online crowdsourcing has established itself as an emerging paradigm that industry and government have been using to harness the cognitive abilities of a multitude of users distributed around the world. In this context, microtask crowdsourcing has become the method of choice for addressing a wide range of diverse problems. Microtasks typically require a minimum of time and cognitive effort, but combined individual efforts have made it possible to accomplish great achievements. The goal of this paper is to contribute to the ongoing effort of understanding whether the same success that microtask crowdsourcing has achieved in other domains can be obtained in the field of social news curation. In particular, we ask whether it is possible to turn online news curation, typically a social and collaborative activity on the Web, into a model in which curatorial activities are mapped into microtasks to be performed by a crowd of online users.

Context: Several code guidelines aim at providing a common perspective on the readability and comprehensibility of source code. However, in many cases, they are contradictory on how to improve these quality characteristics. Objective: To analyze the influence of three contradictory source code attributes - indentation spacing, identifier length and code size - on the source code reada-bility and comprehensibility, interpreting whether programming experience and domain knowledge can support explaining these contradictions. Method: To per-form an empirical study with software developers collecting quantitative (Likert scale) and qualitative data to assess the readability and comprehensibility of de-velopers regarding Python snippets. To observe eventual perceptions contradic-tions and whether their levels of experience and knowledge have something to do with such contrary results. Results: Regardless their programming experience, 4-spaces indentation dominated the readability preference of participants. While the readability and comprehensibility preferences towards long and complete-word identifiers were mostly true for both novice/experts, developers with more experience and low domain knowledge level seemed to be more affected by the length of identifiers. Furthermore, while all participants showed more positive comprehensibility perceptions for Pythin snippets with more lines of code, their readability perceptions regardnig code size were contradictory since the less experienced participants preferred more lines of code and the more experienced ones prefer fewer lines. Conclusion: The results presented in the technical literature seemed to be caused by the interchangeable use of the readability and comprehensibility concepts. Further investigation is still needed to observe whether other confounding factors might support the explanation of such contrary results.

Software Ecosystem (SECO) is often understood as a set of actors interacting among themselves and manipulating artifacts with the support of a common technology platform. Usually, SECO approaches can be designed as an environment whose component repository is gathering stakeholders as well as software products and components. By manipulating software artifacts, a technical network emerges from interactions made over the component repository in order to reuse artifacts, improving code quality, downloading, selling, buying etc. Although technical repositories are essential to store SECO’s artifacts, the interaction among actors in an emerging social network is a key factor to strengthen the SECO’s through increasing actor’s participation, e.g., developing new software, reporting bugs, and communicating with suppliers. In the SECO context, both the internal and external actors keep the platform’s components updated and documented, and even support requirements and suggestions for new releases and bug fixes. However, those repositories often lack resources to support actors’ relationships and consequently to improve the reuse processes by stimulating actors’ interactions, information exchange and better understanding on how artifacts are manipulated by actors. In this paper, we focused on investigating SECO as component repositories that include socio-technical resources. As such, we present a survey that allowed us to identify the relevance of each resource for a SECO based on component repositories, initially focused on the Brazilian scenario. This paper also describes the analysis of the data collected in that survey. Information of other SECO elements extracted from the data is also presented, e.g., the participants’ profile and how they behave within a SECO. Given a set of underwater sensors coordinates that are usually determined by a specialist for the design of a watershed monitoring system, where should be placed the sinks and the base station? The answer may be the minimization of the Variable Internode Distance. In such cases, a two dimensional architecture is acceptable because it is a shallow water system. Hence, in this paper, it is proposed a two-level node distance minimization for Underwater Wireless Sensor Network for monitoring systems. The mathematical method employed for optimization is the Hyperbolic Smoothing approach and the proposed method includes the placement of the base-station in the algorithm. Copyright 2014 ACM.

Music tracking is a useful technique for many music related tasks. Some applications include evaluating musicians performance, automatic score page turning and syncing music lyrics. In this work, we describe a WiSARD-based system for real-time music tracking and evaluate the performance of the corresponding implementation. Given any audio example, the system is capable of recognizing which point of the original signal is currently playing and of dynamically tracking it. In other words, if the music restarts or jumps to another position, the system is capable of following it. This is accomplished thanks to the low complexity training and classifying of the models used, which continually keep track of all possible points of the music, and not only of the current neighboring region. Experiments are provided in order to analyze the performance of the system in three test scenarios: tracking continuous playing, tracking multiple jumps and self predicting errors. The final results demonstrate that the system is efficient even when applied to musics with some level of repetitions and short periods of silence.

The treatment of economic and social issues in Software engineering was pointed out as a challenge for the next years. Companies and organizations have directly (or not) opened up their software platforms and assets to others, including partners and third-party developers around the world, generating software ecosystems (SECOs). This changes the traditional software industry because it requires mature research in software requirements and architecture in an environment where business models and socio-technical networks can impact the management of the platforms' needs and demands overtime. However, one strong inhibitor is the complexity in defining and modeling SECOs elements to improve their comprehension and analysis and their impacts on requirements engineering. So, this paper introduces an approach to support SECO definition and modeling based on the SECOs domain. The goal consists in dealing with the stakeholders' value proposition and realization in SECOs, as well as treating nontechnical issues in components and social repositories.

Dynamic adaptation is the customization of a business process to make it applicable to a particular situation at any time of its life cycle. Adapting requires experience, and involves knowledge about various, internal and external, aspects of business. Thus, we argue for the application of adaptation rules, considering the context of a particular process instance. Furthermore, we state that a context-based adaptation environment should go beyond, and learn from decisions, as well as continuously identify new unforeseen situations (context definitions). The aim of this paper is to present a computational engine that infers the need to update situations and adaptation rules, suggesting changes to them. An application scenario is presented to discuss the usage of the proposal.
