Reference architectures are the basis for application instantiation in both Domain engineering and Product Line contexts. They are created based on domain requirements, commonalities, and variability. Considering that one of the essential sources of information in this context is the existing systems available in the domain, reverse engineering becomes a key activity to assist in reference architectures specification. Although many approaches consider reengineering existing systems to help in reusable components extraction and variability identification, they do not propose an approach, with well-defined activities and criteria, to support reference architectures specification from existing systems. In this context, this paper describes an approach to help in this task covering three macro-Activities, namely: reverse engineering focusing on architectural elements recovery;recovered architecture quality evaluation;and domain commonalities and variability identification. These activities are guided by general criteria, which can be reused across domains, and are supported by a tool set integrated to a reuse based software development environment, i.e. the Odyssey environment. The results of experimental studies conducted to evaluate the first two macro-Activities are described in this paper. Copyright © (2007) by Knowledge systems Institute (KSI).

In scientific and engineering scenarios we can notice the predominance of explicit knowledge being manipulated and distributed, which makes recommender systems very useful in this environment. But along with a knowledge management approach this kind of system can support the organization in better identifying competences, help engage users in a continuous and dynamic knowledge exchange, and customize knowledge dissemination as much as possible. In this work we detail a collaborative recommender system which is used in a Knowledge Management Environment for Scientific and engineering contexts; we show how this approach can be aimed at a KM process and how this approach can deal with other kinds of knowledge used in research centers and universities.

Customer relationship management -CRM -is a broad term that can cover every mode of customer interaction. This concept has been widely used in business language, enabling companies to gain more knowledge about their customers which, in its turn, can be used to improve marketing and sales targeting, improving their results. University and research institutions (URIs), as any other organizations, also need to cater to the needs of their clients, which may be: society in general, their students, researchers and collaborators; other institutions -of a research or commercial nature with which they interact (supplying data, results from research work, consultancy work, and the execution of partnerships) -or governments that make use of their teaching practices and results from their research work. So, this work is a CRM proposal for URIs, studying the differences between the academic/scientific and business world and proposing an environment to manage all kinds of relationships in the academic and scientific scenario.

The Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) technology has been proposed to support different traffic classes with distinct quality of service (QoS) requirements in broadband metropolitan area networks. Therefore, as part of its specifications, such a system must properly address the combined requirements of wireless communications and multimedia applications. We propose in this paper an extension to the MAC protocol presented in [1, 2], by assigning variable priorities to the network stations sharing access to the communication channel. An analytical model to evaluate the performance of the proposed protocol is also developed and results obtained for the messages waiting times at different stations are presented. In addition, simulation data are used to compare the results obtained from the analytical model presented previously. It is concluded that the proposed variable priority MAC protocol is able to improve channel utilization and provide throughput and queueing delay fairness among the stations in the network. © 2006 SBrT.

Regression Error Characteristic (REC) analysis is a technique for evaluation and comparison of regression models that facilitates the visualization of the performance of many regression functions simultaneously in a single graph. The objective of this work is to present a new approach for model selection in ensembles of Neural Networks, in which we propose the use of REC curves in order to select a good threshold value, so that only residuals greater than that value are considered as errors. The algorithm was empirically evaluated and its results were analyzed also by means of REC curves. © 2006 *** publication. All rights reserved.

OBJECTIVE – The objective of this paper is to determine under what circumstances individual organisations would be able to rely on cross-company based estimation models. METHOD – We performed a systematic review of studies that compared predictions from cross-company models with predictions from within-company models based on analysis of project data. RESULTS – Ten papers compared cross-company and within-company estimation models, however, only seven of the papers presented independent results. Of those seven, three found that cross-company models were as good as within-company models, four found cross-company models were significantly worse than within-company models. Experimental procedures used by the studies differed making it impossible to undertake formal meta-analysis of the results. Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) systems offer a solution for broadband access and high data rate transmission of multimedia services with distinct Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements through a wireless medium. IEEE 802.16 Standard specifies the PHY and MAC layers for BWA systems. However, in spite of including the possibility for QoS support, the standard does not define how to schedule different types of traffic. This article propose a new MAC protocol for BWA systems that incorporates a traffic scheduling mechanism based on messages and/or stations priorities. An analytical model to evaluate the performance of the proposed protocol is also developed and results obtained for the messages waiting times of different traffic classes are presented. © 2005 IEEE.
