With the increase in adoption of remote work groups and teams working in non-collocated environments, several opportunities for interaction have been lost. Contact with colleagues and discovery of opportunities, previously easy due to physical proximity, is made harder with distance. In this paper, we describe an agent-based framework to assist users in finding opportunities for interaction that may have been overlooked.

Microkernel based systems tend to depend heavily on IPC. This paper addresses the problem of a system response spanning more than one task in an embedded real-time system. The approach is based on a mix of classical response time analysis equations and a graph based approach to estimate the impact of different parts of the system on the time needed by the system to respond. This approach has the major advantage of being intuitive.

This paper presents MODENA, an architecture for scientific models management using Computational Grid platform. This architecture is comprised of two systems: ModManager and ModRunner. ModManager deals with knowledge management about scientific models, acting as a scientific models library allowing for cataloguing, searching, reutilization and generation of new models. To achieve this, a metamodel is proposed to classify models, in order to support the organization, searching and retrieving of models. ModRunner manages the execution of models in a Grid environment allowing for model composition to generate a scientific Grid Workflow to be executed by distributed services offered by Grid Services. An initial prototype of ModManager is presented.

Software inspections improve software quality by the analysis of software artifacts, detecting their defects for removal before these artifacts are delivered to the following software life cycle activities. Some knowledge regarding software inspections have been acquired by empirical studies. However, we found no indication that computational support for the whole software inspection process using appropriately such knowledge is available. This paper describes a computational framework whose requirements set was derived from knowledge acquired by empirical studies to support software inspections. To evaluate the feasibility of such framework, two studies have been accomplished: one case study, which has shown the feasibility of using the framework to support inspections, and an experimental study that evaluated the supported software inspection planning activity. Preliminary results of this experimental study suggested that unexperienced subjects are able to plan inspections with higher defect detection effectiveness, and in less time, when using this computational framework.

Software engineers face the dilemma of verifying process conformance and having the Hawthorne effect distorting the results or not doing it and as a consequence not being able to know if the proposed process is actually carried out. We addressed this issue by classifying and proposing the use of some approaches based on unobtrusive observation. These approaches include cognitive labs, remote monitoring and metrics collection. In addition, a tool supporting the application of perspective based reading (PER) for requirements inspection has been used and is also presented to exemplify metrics collection. Among other features, PBR Tool unobtrusively collects metrics in order to monitor if the reading technique is faithfully applied. Two studies evaluating the feasibility of such a tool are also reported.

We present a new hybrid system that merges fuzzy logic with dynamic Bayesian networks (DBN's): the fuzzy hidden Markov predictor. It is a modification of the hidden Markov model, a particular case of DBN's, in order to enable it to predict continuous values of a time series. A DBN is a Bayesian network that represents a temporal probability model. This hybrid system is applied to the task of monthly electric load single-step forecasting and successfully compared with three regression-by-discretization systems, two fuzzy hybrid systems, two Kalman filter models, and Box-Jenkins and Winters exponential smoothing. The employed time series present a sudden significant changing behavior at their last years, as it occurs in an energy rationing.

We present the WebComposer tool for the automatic composition and execution of Web service-based workflows. We use ontologies to describe and browse workflows. We associate messages and operations with workflow domain concepts using WSDL extensibility. The automatic workflow implementation through WebComposer enables the full separation of the workflow logic and the implementation technology. WebComposer provides the execution of ad-hoc programs by users and the automatic maintenance of these programs, as the available Web services are altered.
