Organizations open up their software platforms and reusable assets to others, including partners and third-party developers around the world, creating software ecosystems (SECOs). It can contribute to minimize nontechnical barriers of software reuse in industry because it explores potential benefits from the relations among companies and stakeholders. An inhibitor is the complexity in defining value for reusable assets in a scenario where producers try to meet customers' expectations, and vice-versa. This paper presents a value-based mechanism to support component negotiation and socialization processes in a reuse repository in the SECO context as an extension of the Brechó-EcoSys environment. Social resources were integrated into the mechanism in order to aid component negotiation. An evaluation of the negotiation mechanism was performed, based on an analysis of its elements and functions against critical factors in the negotiation within a SECO, identified in a previous systematic literature review. In addition, an analysis of the social resources supporting the negotiation mechanism was performed against popular sociotechnical elements for SECOs, identified in a previous survey with experts in the field.

Provenance refers to the origin of a particular object. In computational terms, provenance is a historical record of the derivation of data that can help to understand the current record. In this context, this work presents a proposal for software processes improvement using a provenance data model and an ontology. This improvement can be obtained by process data execution analysis with an approach called PROV-Process, which uses a layer for storing process provenance and an ontology based on PROV-O.

Software process definition is a complex, time consuming and error prone activity. Such activity can be facilitated by a process reuse strategy. This strategy can be implemented through process line and components structures. This work presents a case study of a real process line creation in the context of an oil and gas company in Brazil. This paper's main goal is to structure an initial research on the Software Ecosystem (SECO) field, regarding the so called CAMSS (Cloud, Analytics, Mobile, Social and Security) and IoT (Internet of Things) technologies. Our main goal is to share our first ideas and some observations we have been conducting in an empirical way. As such, Cloud SECOs bring the ecosystem environment to another level, with new challenges in all three dimensions: technology, social and business. Besides that, we have been observing a possible shift in the center of some SECOs, i.e., Those "things" connected to the Internet have introduced new players - at least in the sense they interact with the environment by providing data. As new software architectures and technologies emerge to support the new scenario being drawn, our research tries to characterize this new ecosystem and identify challenges, providing a roadmap that could help new entrants.

Collaboration monitoring in software process is important to check if the collaboration is indeed happening as planned, but there are few approaches that define how to measure and monitor collaboration. By assessing collaboration during an ongoing process execution, project managers can take corrective actions that might improve the process execution and, consequently, reflect on quality gains of the final product. This research work proposes to evaluate the level of coordination achieved by a running software process through social network analysis metrics. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

Given a set of underwater sensors coordinates that are usually determined by a specialist for the design of a watershed monitoring system, where should be placed the sinks and the base station? The answer may be the minimization of the Variable Internode Distance. In such cases, a two dimensional architecture is acceptable because it is a shallow water system. Hence, in this paper, it is proposed a two-level node distance minimization for Underwater Wireless Sensor Network for monitoring systems. The mathematical method employed for optimization is the Hyperbolic Smoothing approach and the proposed method includes the placement of the base-station in the algorithm. Copyright 2014 ACM.

Software development projects with geographically disperse teams, especially when use UML models for code generation, may gain performance by using tools with collaborative capabilities. This study reviews the distributed collaborative UML editors available in the literature. The UML Editors were compared using a Workstyle Model. Then, we discuss the fundamental challenges which these kind of UML Editors face to assist distributed developers and stakeholders across disperse locations.

Developing and evolving critical information systems in order to cope with changes in regulations and laws is a constant worry for governments in the e-Government era. Due to the frequent challenges and some previous frustrating experiences, the Brazilian Government has searched for an alternative development method that could better fit its needs. At the same time, Brazilian Academia, represented in this case by the computer science department of coppe/ufrj, has been researching how to bridge the gaps in order to harness the promise of Model-Driven Architecture in real life projects. A successful partnership between both started in 2005, which gave birth to a complete MDA development environment that would later be known as MDArte. The MDArte framework has been freely available since 2009 through the SPB portal (Brazilian Public Software Portal - ***) and throughout its construction and evolution more than a dozen real projects have been built and maintained. During the development of such real life projects a lot of critical organizational aspects raised. The main contribution of this paper is to reveal and motivate the discussion on such organizational aspects that must be faced when deciding to adopt an MDA approach. In order to contextualize our perceptions, we present the MDArte experience, including its origin, evolution and current state. The major challenging and complex systems that have been developed with MDArte are presented as success cases along with an analysis of the benefits of using a Model Driven Development (MDD) approach.

The treatment of economic and social issues in Software engineering was pointed out as a challenge for the next years. Companies and organizations have directly (or not) opened up their software platforms and assets to others, including partners and third-party developers around the world, generating software ecosystems (SECOs). This changes the traditional software industry because it requires mature research in software requirements and architecture in an environment where business models and socio-technical networks can impact the management of the platforms' needs and demands overtime. However, one strong inhibitor is the complexity in defining and modeling SECOs elements to improve their comprehension and analysis and their impacts on requirements engineering. So, this paper introduces an approach to support SECO definition and modeling based on the SECOs domain. The goal consists in dealing with the stakeholders' value proposition and realization in SECOs, as well as treating nontechnical issues in components and social repositories.
