Decision-making involves choosing between one ore more alternatives, to achieve one or more goals. To support this process, there are decision support systems that employ different approaches, supporting groups or not. Generally, however, these systems do not have great flexibility; their users have to follow pre- established decision methods. This paper, after exposing some decision-making processes, describes a system, LaSca (from Large Scale), to support decisions in large-scale groups. This system, besides allowing effective achievement of the benefits of deciding in large groups through the proper structuring of the group, also allows its users to define themselves how this structuring will happen, based or not in the existing theories on the subject. So, in addition to facilitate the decision-making process, LaSca also allows its users to decide how to decide.

Decision-making involves choosing between one ore more alternatives, to achieve one ore more goals. This process is composed of a series of steps, ranging from the identification of the problem itself, going trough the definition of criteria that characterize possible solutions to the problem, to the decision-making itself, in which a possible solution to the exposed problem is finally adopted. These steps can be performed by a single person or by a group of people. In group decisions, the solution choice at the end of the process must be effectively made by the group. To support this process, there are decision support systems that employ different approaches, supporting groups or not. This paper defines the decision-making process, presenting benefits of group decision and describes a system to support decisions in large scale groups. Participatory design in the BamPetro environment preservation project seeks to bring a large number of end users into the design process to take into account different perspectives, and help the group cope with multi-objective decisions. These decisions demand synergy among users of the environment preservation project, even though they represent different areas, competencies, political agendas and social interests.

In multi-agent systems, blackboard communication provides an easy way for agents to communicate. However, in a distributed architecture, the blackboard is commonly implemented in a single node, that is the "blackboard server". This approach may work well for a small number of agents. Nevertheless, when the number of agents increases, the blackboard server becomes the bottleneck for the system scalability. In this work we propose a novel agent communication system based on distributed-shared mechanisms that allows the implementation of a shared address space on a distributed system, without centralizing the blackboard. Our idea is to distribute the shared data over the nodes and use a message passing sub-system, totally transparent to the agents. We implemented this idea in a multi-agent system based on social laws, and used a distributed-shared memory system to handle the messaging. We created a conflict simulator, and showed that the distributed-shared mechanisms easy the implementation of a truly distributed blackboard.

OBJECTIVE: To propose a conceptual framework that supports the identification of the level of adherence of software projects regarding ubiquitous computing METHOD: To run systematic reviews to characterize 1) ubiquitous computing, 2) its main features and 3) its specific requirements RESULTS: Fifty seven papers were analyzed regarding: (1) the ubiquitous computing definition, (2) ubiquitous applications, and, (3) 10 dimensions characterizing ubiquitous applications To complement these results, other systematic review was accomplished In this case, fifty nine papers were analyzed identifying a set of 123 functional and 45 nonfunctional requirements associated to the ubiquitous dimensions CONCLUSIONS: It is possible to have a common perspective to work with the ubiquitous software engineering area including the definition for ubiquitous computing and ubiquitous dimensions, and functional and non-functional requirements associated to each ubiquitous dimension Therefore, a conceptual framework to classify software projects according to the adherence to the ubiquity perspective has been organized and discussed in this work.

OBJECTIVE – The objective of this paper is to determine under what circumstances individual organisations would be able to rely on cross-company based estimation models. METHOD – We performed a systematic review of studies that compared predictions from cross-company models with predictions from within-company models based on analysis of project data. RESULTS – Ten papers compared cross-company and within-company estimation models, however, only seven of the papers presented independent results. Of those seven, three found that cross-company models were as good as within-company models, four found cross-company models were significantly worse than within-company models. Experimental procedures used by the studies differed making it impossible to undertake formal meta-analysis of the results. In project teams, having an unique vocabulary and a common understanding about terms is essential to the success of the project. This issue especially disturbs a design project, which has a multidisciplinary team and must consist of people with specific and different knowledge, from diverse domains, to execute special activities. Negotiation arises from this context as a process for the construction of consensus. The goal of this work is to present a model of negotiation to obtain the consensus of meanings, based on models of business negotiation, and consequently, deal with conflicts and the multiplicity of understandings of a concept, making this negotiation a way for creating value for all agents involved

Domain engineering (DE) and Component-based Development (CBD) are approaches that focus on reuse. On the one hand, DE methods emphasize variability modeling in analysis phase. With the grown availability of large and specialized online ontologies, the questions about the integration of independently developed ontologies have become even more important. To facilitate the ontology integration process, this paper presents an ontology integration support module, that promotes the creation of new ontologies by reusing others. The hypothesis is that the ontology designer will achieve a reduction in the time dedicated to create a new ontology, as well as obtain ontologies with better quality. The experimental use of the prototype developed showed evidence that the hypothesis can be confirmed.

The activities executed in the scientific environment are extremely dependent on knowledge from their performers. Thus, knowledge management initiatives are very important in this environment. One of the possibilities for improving the knowledge flow is to explore past experiences, resulting from the modeling and execution of previous scientific activities and handled by a workflow management system. This work presents Thoth, a system which aims at knowledge reuse in the scientific environment, during the planning, design and execution of scientific activities. This approach is integrated, with a CBR approach, also described in this paper, with workflow systems and the use of ontologies.
