Peer-to-peer (P2P) offers good solutions for many applications such as large data sharing and collaboration. Thus, it appears as a powerful paradigm to develop scalable distributed applications, as reflected by the increasing number of emerging projects based on this technology. However, building trustworthy P2P collaborative tool is difficult because they must be deployed on a large number of autonomous nodes, which may be part of the virtual community and to make the collaboration effectively happen among the nodes. Within this scenario, this article presents an autonomic recommendation mechanism of knowledge chains, which is based on the apprentice profile and his current knowledge to recommend the best learning strategy after the analysis of the learning community in this peer-to-peer environment.

With the increasing popularity of web-based map browsers, remotely obtaining a high quality depiction of cartographic information has become commonplace. Most web mapping systems, however, rely on high-capacity servers transmitting pre-rendered tiled maps in raster format. That approach is capable of producing good quality renderings on the client side while using limited bandwidth and exploiting the browser's image cache. These goals are harder to achieve for maps in vector format. In this work, we present an alternative client-server architecture capable of progressively transmitting vector maps in levels-of-detail (LOD) by using techniques such as polygonal line simplification, spatial data structures and, most importantly, a customized memory management algorithm. A multiplatform implementation of this system is described, where the client application is written entirely in JavaScript and processed within the web browser, avoiding the need of external applications or plug-ins. Results of experiments aimed at gauging both the performance and the display quality obtained with the system are presented and explained. Extensions to the system are also discussed, including issues such as level-of-detail versus visual importance tradeoffs and the handling of closed polygonal lines.

In a decision-making process, a systematic method to manage and measure negotiation aspects provides crucial information to negotiators and has emerged as a key factor to determine agreements' success or failure. Accordingly, this work aims at presenting a negotiation support system which provides functionalities to create negotiation models through settlements' historical information. These models are interpreted as Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCM) and the software tests as the convergence of each model. Thus, the system intends to facilitate decision-markers to predict future negotiations behavior and, consequently, improve the chances of an agreement. Besides, this work examines a case study through the lenses of FCM to illustrate real negotiations outcomes and expected value quantifications. The proposal is to compare a model map developed from old negotiations with the results obtained through FCM simulations. As a result, from the use of these mechanisms, negotiators could better visualize alternative ways to improve the chances of successful agreements.

The technical literature regarding Model-based Testing (MBT) has several techniques with different characteristics and goals available to be applied in software projects. Besides the lack of information regarding these techniques, they could be applied together in a software project aiming at improving the testing coverage. However, this decision needs to be carefully analyzed to avoid loss of resources in a software project. Based on this scenario, this paper proposes an approach with the purpose of supporting the unique or combined selection of MBT techniques for a given software project considering two aspects: the adequacy level between MBT techniques and the software project characteristics and impact of more than one MBT technique in some testing process variables. At the end, preliminary results of an experimental evaluation are presented.

One of the most popular approaches to work with software reuse is component-based software engineering (CBSE). Despite a strategic importance in the global economy and the existent component repositories, the promised benefits of CBSE could not be broadly evaluated until now due to the lack of mature and well-established component marketplaces. Moreover, to create and maintain these markets, historical data and value considerations can be strategies to investigate. This paper proposes a value-based approach to address these strategies, Brecho-VCM, focusing on the stakeholders' value realization and on building a value chain.

Knowledge has always been an advantage in any social activity that involves dispute. To possess knowledge on the domain of a negotiation can give one the edge to attain one's desired goals. In order to obtain such knowledge, an alternative can be the collaboration between allied negotiators where past experiences, acquired in negotiation, can be important and a powerful tool to future efforts. To facilitate this collaboration, this work presents an application of the 3C model for negotiation, the NK-Sys, a tool whose goal is to support the negotiator in decision-making; this tool takes Knowledge Management into account to allow cooperation between negotiators.

Parallel rendering algorithms usually suffer from high load imbalance during execution, due to the irregular nature of the datasets. In this paper, we propose a new load balancing scheme for tile-based parallel rendering that includes strategies for load estimation, tile decomposition and tile assignment. The load estimation strategy computes the rendering cost for each pixel, and uses it as a prediction for the next frame. The tile decomposition strategy adaptively divides the screen into tiles based on the computed costs, until an evenly tile partition is achieved. The tile assignment strategy distributes the tiles among rendering processors, based on a 2-optimal scheduling. Experimental results show that our scheme achieves significant performance gains by reducing the load imbalance when compared to the traditional tile subdivision and static random distribution schemes.

Currently, the number of developers involved in a software development project is increasing because of the need to deliver systems with higher complexity and quality and to reduce time-to-market. In order to have the software development process executing in an organized way, we must provide mechanisms to control concurrent access over the project artifacts. These mechanisms are implemented by concurrency control policies in version control systems, which may allow (optimistic policy) or inhibit (pessimistic policy) parallel development. This work presents the Orion approach, which analyzes the project historical changes and selects the most appropriate concurrency control policy for each software element. In addition, it identifies critical elements, which are candidates to refactoring. This selection aims at minimizing conflict situations, and thus improving the development team productivity. A prototype was built to enable the application of the proposed approach and two experimental studies were performed as a preliminary evaluation.

This work presents a spatial distribution analysis of Brazilian Atlantic Forest Bromeliad species catalogued by the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Gardens Research Institute. Our analysis aims at identifying probable endangered species and conservation areas (environmental reservations) for specific Bromeliad species. For that, we propose a solution using Data Mining techniques and the data visualization through the TerraView tool. Thus, it was possible to define where are typical species, allowing more effective field tours.
