This work presents the development of the AGROMET environment: a platform that supports scientific work in a cooperative way providing the reutilization of data, metadata, models, programs and workflow definitions. To reach this goal this environment is composed of five modules that are responsible for: i) data integration;ii) support to the scientific workflows;iii) support to the collaborative decision;iv) scientific knowledge management, and v) document and content management. To understand the questions involved in the scientific work a study case is accomplished in the Agro-Meteorology area in the Brazilian Agricultural Research Enterprise (Embrapa Solos). With this collaborative platform the access, sharing and consequent innovation of the scientific knowledge will be better disseminated in the environment work.

There is a growing interest in empirical study in software engineering, both for validating mature technologies and for guiding improvements of less-mature technologies. This paper introduces an empirical methodology, based on experiences garnered over more than two decades of work by the Empirical Software engineering Group at the University of Maryland and related organizations, for taking a newly proposed improvement to development processes from the conceptual phase through transfer to industry. The methodology presents a series of questions that should be addressed, as well as the types of studies that best address those questions. The methodology is illustrated by a specific research program on inspection processes for Object-Oriented designs. Specific examples of the studies that were performed and how the methodology impacted the development of the inspection process are also described.

Proposes a method for data clustering in a n-dimensional space using the elastic net algorithm which is a variant of the Kohonen topographic map learning algorithm. The elastic net algorithm is a mechanical metaphor in which an elastic ring is attracted by points in a bi-dimensional space while their internal elastic forces try to shun the elastic expansion. The different weights associated with these two kinds of forces lead the elastic to a gradual expansion in the direction of the bi-dimensional points. In this method, the elastic net algorithm is employed with the help of a heuristic framework that improves its performance for application in the n-dimensional space of cluster analysis. Tests were made with two types of data sets: (1) simulated data sets with up to 1000 points randomly generated in groups linearly separable with up to dimension 10 and (2) the Fisher Iris Plant database, a well-known database referred to in the pattern recognition literature. The advantages of the method presented are its simplicity, its fast and stable convergence, beyond efficiency in cluster analysis.

Inspections can be used to identify defects in software artifacts. In this way, inspection methods help to improve software quality, especially when used early in software development. Inspections of software design may be especially crucial since design defects (problems of correctness and completeness with respect to the requirements, internal consistency, or other quality attributes) can directly affect the quality of, and effort required for, the *** have created a set of “reading techniques” (so called because they help a reviewer to “read” a design artifact for the purpose of finding relevant information) that gives specific and practical guidance for identifying defects in Object-Oriented designs. Each reading technique in the family focuses the reviewer on some aspect of the design, with the goal that an inspection team applying the entire family should achieve a high degree of coverage of the design *** this paper, we present an overview of this new set of reading techniques. We discuss how some elements of these techniques are based on empirical results concerning an analogous set of reading techniques that supports defect detection in requirements documents. We present an initial empirical study that was run to assess the feasibility of these new techniques, and discuss the changes made to the latest version of the techniques based on the results of this study.

Carnival is a performance measurement and analysis tool that assists users in understanding the performance of DSM applications and protocols. Using traces of program executions, Carnival presents performance data as a hierarchy of execution profiles. During analysis, Carnival automates the inference process that relates performance phenomena to specific causes in the source code or DSM protocol using techniques that focus on the two most important sources of overhead in DSM systems: waiting time analysis identifies the causes of synchronization overhead, and produces an explanation for each source of waiting time in the program;communication analysis identifies the sequence of requests that result in invalidations, and produces an explanation for each source of communication. We describe these techniques and their implementation in TreadMarks, and show how to use waiting time analysis and communication analysis to improve the running time of two programs froIn the SPLASH application snite when executed on DEC Alphas connected by a DEC Memory Channel network. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1997.

Categorizes the coherence traffic in update-based protocols and shows that, for most applications, more than 90% of all updates generated by such a protocol are unnecessary. We identify application characteristics that generate useless update traffic, and compare the isolated and combined effects of several software and hardware techniques for eliminating useless updates. These techniques include dynamic and static hybrid protocols, a data re-mapping strategy, and coalescing write buffers. Our simulations show that these techniques are effective for different types of useless updates. Overall, software caching (where dynamic data re-mapping is performed under programmer or compiler control) has the potential to significantly increase the percentage of useful traffic in applications. When software caching is not applicable, either the static or the dynamic protocol generates the least useless traffic. Although coalescing write buffers provide great reductions in the total number of messages transferred, these buffers do not necessarily increase the percentage of useful traffic.
