This article presents the Bill of Experiments tool (BOE), a collaborative environment for the reuse of scientific experiments. The tool is a Web-based system aimed at scientists and suppliers of scientific artifacts. It is capable of pointing out the best alternatives for the accomplishment of scientific experiments based on cost criteria, deadline attainment and quality, in an analogy with the bill of materials process. With the aid of a scientific database on experiments we can describe a collaborative environment for the explicit description, combination, generation (design) and reuse of scientific knowledge. For this work we used concepts from various research areas, like knowledge management, databases, artificial intelligence workflow and CSCW. We present a study case applied to the biological area. We obtained the best alternatives for the experiment's detailed accomplishment and an explanation of why the inference module was chosen, and the advantage of using CLP techniques over conventional optimization techniques. BOE acts as an Internet portal that unites researchers, institutions and companies in a paradigm similar to B2B.

Context: Several code guidelines aim at providing a common perspective on the readability and comprehensibility of source code. However, in many cases, they are contradictory on how to improve these quality characteristics. Objective: To analyze the influence of three contradictory source code attributes - indentation spacing, identifier length and code size - on the source code reada-bility and comprehensibility, interpreting whether programming experience and domain knowledge can support explaining these contradictions. Method: To per-form an empirical study with software developers collecting quantitative (Likert scale) and qualitative data to assess the readability and comprehensibility of de-velopers regarding Python snippets. To observe eventual perceptions contradic-tions and whether their levels of experience and knowledge have something to do with such contrary results. Results: Regardless their programming experience, 4-spaces indentation dominated the readability preference of participants. While the readability and comprehensibility preferences towards long and complete-word identifiers were mostly true for both novice/experts, developers with more experience and low domain knowledge level seemed to be more affected by the length of identifiers. Furthermore, while all participants showed more positive comprehensibility perceptions for Pythin snippets with more lines of code, their readability perceptions regardnig code size were contradictory since the less experienced participants preferred more lines of code and the more experienced ones prefer fewer lines. Conclusion: The results presented in the technical literature seemed to be caused by the interchangeable use of the readability and comprehensibility concepts. Further investigation is still needed to observe whether other confounding factors might support the explanation of such contrary results.

According to some researchers, the wave of crowds we are witnessing in recent years is another example of the challenges for the CSCW community, a line of research that fights against the dilemma of fragmentation. The reflexes of this phenomena in projects of different branches have caused a change of paradigm in how products and services are idealized and how the projects are conducted in a collaborative way. Successful examples have attracted the attention of entrepreneurs in various areas and increased the business vocabulary with terms like crowd wisdom, crowdsourcing, crowdfunding and open innovation. It is a different reality from the one we are used to in the context of groupware systems, and it brings new challenges that leave some relevant open research questions. This paper proposes a characterization of crowd computing systems, contextualizing the design activity within this domain, presents a research agenda in the context of CSCW and discusses possible implications of the mass phenomena on the line of action of the community of computer Supported Cooperative Work in Design. © 2012 IEEE.

Economic and social issues are pointed out as Software engineering (SE) challenges for the next years, since the field needs to treat issues beyond the technical side. These challenges require analyzing the field of SE from another perspective. In this sense, the study of software ecosystems (SECOs) is an emerging discipline that investigates the relationships among companies in the software industry. Companies work cooperatively and competitively in order to achieve their strategic objectives. They must engage in a new perspective, now also including third parties motivations and movements in the ecosystem, besides their own business viewpoint. Inspired on properties of natural and business ecosystems, SECO covers technical and business aspects of software development as well as partnership among companies. In this paper, we undertake a review on SECOs status as an emerging research topic in SE community. We map what is currently known about SECOs and also analyze them in a three-dimensional perspective in SE, i.e., technical, business and social. We observed that SECOs research is concentrated in eight main areas in which the most relevant ones are open source software, ecosystem modeling, and business issues. This paper also contributes to summarize the body of knowledge and presents a research agenda in SECOs. © 2012 IEEE.

Many components are usually created within a Domain engineering (DE) process. These components may exchange a great number of messages among them, and many times this interaction occurs within a specific group of components. The more messages the components exchange, the more complex the domain architecture becomes, thus compromising its understandability, maintainability and ultimately its reusability. This paper presents some elements of a components grouping technique that aims to identify and propose solutions to components coupling problems. This technique is being proposed within a domain engineering process called CBD-Arch-DE focused on component-based architectural design. © 2005 IEEE.

Software processes have been the focus of discussion in literature, but defining a software process remains a challenge. The Software Process Line (SPrL) technique offers a systematic process reuse approach that identifies processes' similarities and variability. This study aims to characterize the state-of-the-art of the software process definition using SPrL. A systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted and 26 papers were identified to be studied in depth. The results indicate a concentration of approaches that use mapping/rules techniques to support variability resolution and the need for integrated supporting tools. In addition, three problems that affect the software process definition using SPrL were observed: (1) low understanding of SPrL models complexity and their impact, (2) lack of understanding about the impacts of the defined software process, and (3) experts' knowledge dependence issues in decision-making to solve variability.

Pattern development for complex systems is a common practice nowadays. These patterns delineate the development of many systems, identifying behaviours and structures that can be re-used in several problems. Autonomic Data Killing Patterns represent a need when thinking about the final destination of data. Nowadays, the knowledge on data killing is as important as the knowledge on data storage. This work discusses this idea and shows patterns to deal with related issues. This approach can help organizations and people to control irrelevant data through the knowledge of different ways to eliminate them. The patterns are described using high- level Petri nets and active rules. This strategy allows to monitor and to act in the environment, an important characteristic of autonomic systems.

It is expected that managing process variations and organizing process domain knowledge in a reusable way can provide support to handle complexity in software process definition. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to describe a systematic software process reuse methodology, by combining process reuse techniques, such as Software Process Line and Component Based Process Definition, aiming to increase reuse possibilities. SPrL approach manages the variability aspect inherent to software process domain and CBPD focuses on modularizing the domain process information into process components. The proposed SPrL modelling metamodel and notation address reusable process elements, explicitly representing the variability concept in both process domain structure and behaviour. Based on the results of the evaluation studies, it was possible to get evidences of the approach feasibility, with a higher expressiveness when using the process variability notation proposed, which allow that more semantic concepts inherent to SPrL scenarios can be graphically described. Also, the set of heuristics to support mappings among artefacts in distinct abstraction levels was considered useful to keep the traceability of variability properties, relationships and restrictions. Further research is being conducted to explore ways to support project managers during the decision-making in new software process definitions. © 2018 by SCITEPRESS - science and Technology Publications, Lda.

Dynamism of day-to-day activities in organizations is inextricably linked and there is a variety of information, insight and reasoning being processed between people and systems, in carrying out a business process. We argue that flexibility in processes could be managed in real time, using context information collected in the work environment. This paper proposes a context management architecture approach that aims to improve and automate dynamic process adaptation. We explain how process adaptation may occur in real time and discuss a scenario for this proposal © 2011 IEEE.
