Experimental studies have been used as a mechanism to acquire knowledge through a scientific approach based on measurement of phenomena in different areas. However it is hard to run such studies when they require models (simulation), produce amount of information, and explore science in scale. In this case, a computerized infrastructure is necessary and constitutes a complex system to be built. In this paper we discuss an experimentation environment that has being built to support large scale experimentation and scientific knowledge management in software engineering.

Provenance refers to the origin of a particular object. In computational terms, provenance is a historical record of the derivation of data that can help to understand the current record. In this context, this work presents a proposal for software processes improvement using a provenance data model and an ontology. This improvement can be obtained by process data execution analysis with an approach called PROV-Process, which uses a layer for storing process provenance and an ontology based on PROV-O.

The creation of tools, techniques and methodologies to support the manipulation of large data sets has been receiving special attention of both scientific and industrial communities, in order to discover new ways of dealing with the underlying information, including learning purposes, identification of patterns, decision making support, amongst others. However, making use of computing resources to enhance awareness and understanding of software information and the software itself is still a challenge in software/systems engineering, since it involves the identification of suitable mechanisms, adequate abstractions, and studies on stimulation of the human perceptive and cognitive abilities. This paper presents some of the challenges in this context, based on current trends of software development lifecycle, program comprehension, and software engineering education. At the end, a special focus is given on ongoing research on using and improving current mechanisms for supporting software reuse practices and software comprehension in general. © 2012 IEEE.

Federal Government publishes laws and decrees daily. However, a simple search can return inconsistent information about this document, when its status has been changed later in another document through a government act like publication, grinding, re-publication, cancellation and amendment. The goal of this paper is to present the solution adopted by the Federal Budget Secretary responsible for monitoring decrees, legislation, jurisprudence and administrative actions related to federal budget control. Thus, the knowledge represented treat the lifecycle of this type of documents by adding properties such as signature date, signing authority and role of authority at time of signature, providing chronological and semantic processing on the search for document types. The RDF conceptual model for knowledge representation was adopted, since it is a standard for open data from federal government on the Web to facilitate citizen access to information, thus fulfilling the constitutional provision that defines the citizen as the holder of the access right to information. On the Case Study performed was necessary to crawl and mining Brazilian Official Gazette for documents identification of Federal Budget domain and the subsequent extraction of knowledge about the transformations undergone by each decree. © 2011 IADIS.

With the fast growth of electronic commerce, there is increased demand and greater potential for online negotiation services. Negotiation is the means through which participants arrive at a specific agreement under conditions of strategic interaction or interdependent decision making. Furthermore, negotiation environment information, knowledge about both parties, and previous experience in negotiations can be useful in new negotiations. This scenario requires a management model which should be able to capture and manage this knowledge, disseminating it to the negotiators, providing the right knowledge at the right time during a negotiation, and improving the results. Our approach proposes an environment to support negotiation processes, which combines a business process model, a negotiation protocol and a workflow-based architecture to facilitate cooperation among users, managing the acquired knowledge in each negotiation and disseminating it to the organization. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

In a decision-making process, a systematic method to manage and measure negotiation aspects provides crucial information to negotiators and has emerged as a key factor to determine agreements' success or failure. Accordingly, this work aims at presenting a negotiation support system which provides functionalities to create negotiation models through settlements' historical information. These models are interpreted as Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCM) and the software tests as the convergence of each model. Thus, the system intends to facilitate decision-markers to predict future negotiations behavior and, consequently, improve the chances of an agreement. Besides, this work examines a case study through the lenses of FCM to illustrate real negotiations outcomes and expected value quantifications. The proposal is to compare a model map developed from old negotiations with the results obtained through FCM simulations. As a result, from the use of these mechanisms, negotiators could better visualize alternative ways to improve the chances of successful agreements.

The activities executed in the scientific environment are extremely dependent on knowledge from their performers. Thus, knowledge management initiatives are very important in this environment. One of the possibilities for improving the knowledge flow is to explore past experiences, resulting from the modeling and execution of previous scientific activities and handled by a workflow management system. This work presents Thoth, a system which aims at knowledge reuse in the scientific environment, during the planning, design and execution of scientific activities. This approach is integrated, with a CBR approach, also described in this paper, with workflow systems and the use of ontologies.

Collaboration is important for productivity, quality, and knowledge sharing in software development. In this context, the use of social networks analysis can help to track the level of collaboration in a development project. In this work, an exploratory study was conducted, in the context of free/open source software, using EvolTrack-SocialNetwork tool, to investigate collaboration in software teams. The preliminary results indicate a potential to increase one's ability to understand the course that the collaboration is taking. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Many current version control systems use a simple data model that is barely sufficient to manipulate source-code. This simple data model is not sufficient to provide versioning capabilities for software modeling environments, which are strongly focused on analysis and architectural design artifacts. In this work, we introduce a flexible version control system for UML model elements. This version control system, named Odyssey-VCS, deals with the complex data model used by UML-based CASE tools. Moreover, it allows the configuration of both the unit of versioning and unit of comparison for each specific project, respecting the different needs of the diverse development scenarios.
