Effective exploitation of the application-specific parallel patterns and computation operations through their direct implementation in hardware is the base for construction of high-quality application-specific (re-)configurable application specific instruction set processors (ASIPs) and hardware accelerators for modern highly-demanding applications. Although it receives a lot of attention from the researchers and practitioners, a very important problem of hardware reuse in ASIP and accelerator synthesis is clearly underestimated and does not get enough attention in the published research. This paper is an effect of an industry and academic collaborative research. It analyses the problem of hardware sharing, shows its high practical relevance, as well as a big influence of hardware sharing on the major circuit and system parameters, and its importance for the multi-objective optimization and tradeoff exploitation. It also demonstrates that the state-of-the-art synthesis tools do not sufficiently address this problem and gives several guidelines related to enhancement of the hardware reuse.

This paper proposes a multiobjective heuristic search approach to support a project portfolio selection technique on scenarios with a large number of candidate projects. The original formulation for the technique requires analyzing all combinations of candidate projects, which is unfeasible when more than a few alternatives are available. We have used a multiobjective genetic algorithm to partially explore the search space of project combinations and select the most effective ones. We present an experimental study based on four project selection problems that compares the results found by the genetic algorithm to those yielded by a non-systematic search procedure. Results show evidence that the project selection technique can be used in large-scale scenarios and that GA presents better results than simpler search strategy. Recently, the problem of robust diagnosis against intermittent loss of observations (RDILO) has been proposed in the literature, where a model for the plant subject to intermittent loss of event observations is presented, and fault diagnosability verification methods are proposed based on the new plant model. In this method it is assumed that some sensors of the system are reliable and are always capable of communicating their readings to the diagnoser, while the other sensors, or communication channels between sensors and diagnoser, are subject to intermittent failures. The case of unreliable communication of all observable events cannot be addressed using the RDILO since the model of the plant subject to intermittent loss of event observations also represents their permanent losses. In this paper, we formulate a different problem of robust diagnosis that considers only intermittent loss of observations, which allows considering the case that all communication channels between the plant and diagnoser are not reliable. The new formulation leads to a different notion of robust diagnosability, called K-loss robust diagnosability.

The rapid change of trading values from tangible assets to Intelectual Property has put both businesses and academia in a race to acquire and protect the rights to exploit such property. This is mainly accomplished in the form of patent issuing by the governments, being time consuming and complicated due to the vast amount of documents that need to be analyzed in order to assert the novelty or validity of a patent application. Patent information retrieval research is thus growing quickly to support document analysis across multiple domains and information systems. One of the big challenges in patent analysis is the identification of the elements of innovation (concepts, processes, materials) and the relations between them, in the patent text. This paper presents a method for extracting semantic information from patent claims by using semantic annotations on phrasal structures, abstracting domain ontology information and outputting ontology-friendly structures to achieve generalization. An extraction system built upon the method is briefly evaluated on a document sample from INPI, the Brazilian patent office, a challenging information source.

The average grey-levels (AVGL) calculated from B-Mode images were assessed for non-invasive temperature estimation in a porcine kidney sample. The porcine kidney was subjected to heating and cooling procedure with temperature varying from 36℃ to 45℃. The sample was continuously imaged with an ultrasound scanner, and simultaneously temperature was measured at each 5 s using two Type-T thermocouples placed at the central region and at the bottom of the sample. The result shows that AVGL/Temperature relations were highly correlated for both regions, and considering heating and cooling periods. Besides, AVGL/Temperature functions estimated fitting errors inferior to ± 0.25℃, indicating that it might be possible to track temperature changes from both tissues using AVGL. This result is innovative since it suggests that AVGL seems to be robust to estimate non-invasively temperature variations in B-mode images from tissues presenting a complex morphological structure.

PatternLab for proteomics is a self-contained computational environment for analyzing shotgun proteomic data. Recent improvements incorporate modules to facilitate the computational analysis, such as FastaDBXtractor for sequence database preparation and ProLuCID runner for simplifying and managing the protein identification search engine;modules for pushing the limits on proteomics standards, such as SEPro, which relies on a semi-labeled decoy approach for increasing confidence in filtering and organizing peptide spectrum matches;and modules with novel features, such as SEProQ for enabling labelfree quantitation by extracted ion chromatograms according to a distributed normalized ion abundance factor approach (dNIAF). Existing modules were also improved, such as the TFold module for pinpointing differentially expressed proteins. These new modules are integrated into the previously described arsenal of tools for further data analysis. Here we provide detailed instructions for operating and understanding them. © 2012 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The rise of artificial intelligence agents and information technology platforms governed by data-driven algorithms has had profound impacts on the way knowledge work is managed and carried out. Concerning the novel uses of digital work platforms, the arising tensions might suggest that the socio-technical design frameworks adopted by major tech firms are becoming less viable and in some cases ineffective. We propose a conceptual architecture to support a socio-technical framework for exploring Personal Knowledge Ecologies in the context of the digital knowledge economy. This framework aims to increase the degree of individual freedom for the interoperation of these knowledge information infrastructures.

Citizen engagement in building user-curated narratives of complex or long-lasting news stories has been the key foundation of the design and implementation of the Acropolis virtual environment. Previous user studies have shown, by positive evidence, that this goal can be pragmatically achieved, but the challenge now lies in assessing: a) the extent to which an environment like Acropolis can be used to empower citizens; and b) whether and how the tool could be used to support the work of professional curators. Findings from a focus group study highlighted the tool's potential to engage citizens with news, the usefulness of the environment to build virtual memories, and the convenience of using Acropolis to support professional journalistic work.

We report the first findings of an empirical study aimed at investigating how COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the work practices and lifestyles of digital nomads (DN). To do this, we analyzed messages, questions and comments posted by digital nomads in a specific online discussion community of the Reddit social network. Preliminary findings indicate COVID-19 as an opportunity to test DN lifestyle by aspiring digital nomads who want to plan their careers and also present evidence of an overload of online channels for actual DNs. On the other hand, we found that much of the literature on digital nomadism is fragmented and scattered through different disciplines and perspectives, with a strong focus on digital nomads' lifestyles. In order to obtain a holistic and unified understanding of digital nomads, we conducted a comprehensive literature review to further conceptualize the phenomenon under study.

In this paper, we report on new findings about the results of an empirical study which aims to investigate how the COVID-19 pandemic has been shaping nomadic work practices and also challenging the lifestyles of digital nomads (DN). To do this, we collected textual data from posts in a Reddit community. We argue that, in order to understand how to design technical solutions for the so-called ‘new normal’ working conditions, one way to approach this is to understand how digital nomads are being impacted in their work practices and routines, and also how they are seeing the future of their technology-mediated work-life space. Finally, we show how evidence collected from DNs about their experiences and difficulties perceived during the pandemic period can inform CSCW researchers worldwide about future design-oriented strands.
