In this paper, we assess the performance of DSMIO cachecoherence algorithm implemented in a parallel object-based database management system (ODBMS). The distinguishing feature of DSMIO is its use of the lazy release memory consistency model and multiplewriter protocol to reduce both the number and size of coherence messages required to keep coherent a distributed ODBMS across a cluster of PC servers. Using a large distributed database and several application workloads we evaluate DSMIO performance and also compare it against that of the well-known Call-Back Locking (CBL) algorithm. Our results showt hat both algorithms perform very well for read operations whereas DSMIO outperforms significantly CBL for write operations with DSMIO speed-ups attaining as much as 5.4 while CBL speed-ups reach at most 1.4 for an 8-node cluster. Overall, these results suggest that designers of cluster-based ODBMS should consider D. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002

In Software engineering, context can be understood as the overall set of information used to characterize the situation of an entity. A software system is context-aware if it uses the context to provide relevant information or services to the user. Nowadays, different types of software systems with a profound impact on the user's life can be considered context-aware (e.g., ubiquitous and Internet of Things software systems). Therefore, it is crucial to guarantee that they behave correctly. Software Testing is the primary process for verifying system behavior. Because of the particularities of Context-Aware Software systems (CASS), conventional testing methods are not enough to test such systems. Based on that, we propose CATS#, a technique to support software engineers with the specification of CASS test cases and capture not only the context itself but its variation as well. CATS# is an evolution of the CATS (Context-Aware Test Suite) Design technique. It introduces two relevant evolutions: test case models and a new test template. The test case models were proposed after we searched for context-aware applications through the literature and realized that the context could affect the test process in different manners. The test template was proposed to capture the variation of context by specifying which variation should occur during the test case and when it should occur. We selected one example application to apply our technique, deriving different types of test cases and showing its relevance in these initial steps. © CIbSE 2020.

The evolution of science has been supported by complex computerized infrastructures with growing interest in simulation based experiments. This trend can also be observed in Software engineering. Our capacity of acquiring evidences to describe phenomena of interest in the field allowed the building of in silico models that can virtually replicate feasible software behaviors and improve our capacity of observation. In silico experiments demand additional concerns for its planning. One of them is regarding the scientific workflow conception. This task is not easy and to apply ad-hoc approaches can risky the experiment execution, validity and future replications. Regarding this topic, this paper presents some initial results from our research towards an approach to support the conception of scientific workflows for in silico experiments in Software engineering are presented. © 2010 ACM.

This paper presents a literature survey of action research (AR) studies published in nine major Software engineering (SE) journals and three conference proceedings in the period 1993 to June 2009. A strict selection based on distinguishing SE from Information systems research has identified 16 papers. Although they represent a very small fraction of the studies being conducted in SE, such papers concern with different SE contexts allowing to get information about the increasing tendency in the AR use in software engineering. However, as shown by the initial results, SE researchers should invest more on rigor when defining, applying and reporting AR studies in SE. © 2009 IEEE.

The extreme learning machine (ELM) is known for being a fast learning neural model. This work presents a performance comparison between ELM and the WiSARD weightless neural network model, regarding training and testing times, and classification accuracy as well. The two models were implemented in the same programming language and experiments were carried out on the same hardware environment. By using a group of datasets from the public repositories UCI and Statlog, experimental results shows that the WiSARD presented training times approximately one order of magnitude smaller than ELM, while classification accuracy varied according the number of classes involved. However, while WiSARD's architecture setups were not exhaustively searched, architecture setups for ELM were kept the same as the ones found in the literature as the best for each given dataset. © ESANN 2017 - Proceedings, 25th European Symposium on Artificial Neural Networks, Computational Intelligence and Machine Learning. Software systems are growing quickly in needs of functionality, complexity, size and structure. Therefore, it becomes necessary to advance the ways where the software suffers changes, so it can be modified more easily to accommodate these needs. However, anticipating to the changes is not an easy task, once there are a lot of reasons why systems change. The Laws of Software Evolution describe how a system behaves throughout their successive versions regarding its decaying. Most of the experimental studies supporting these Laws are concerned with legacy systems' source code. However, we believe the Laws can also be observed and applied when dealing with other software development process phases, including evolutive maintenance. Therefore, we present a set of hypotheses to experimentally verify whether the Laws of Software Evolution can also be observed in the object-oriented software. A case study demonstrating the framework's use is also described.

Speculative Multithreading (SpMT) increases the performance by means of executing multiple threads speculatively to exploit thread-level parallelism. By combining software and hardware approaches, we have improved the capabilities of previous WaveScalar ISA on the basis of Transactional Memory system for the WaveCache Architecture. Threads are extracted at the course of static compiling, and speculatively executed as a thread-level transaction that is supported by extra hardware components, such as Thread-Context-Table (TCT) and Thread-Memory-History (TMH). We have evaluated the SpMT WaveCache with 6 real benchmarks from SPEC, Mediabench and Mibench. On the whole, the SpMT WaveCache outperforms superscalar architecture ranging from 2X to 3X, and great performance gains are achieved over original WaveCache and Transactional WaveCache as well. © 2008 IEEE.

In this paper we present the architecture for the Personal Autonomic Desktop Manager, a self managing application designed to act on behalf of the user in several aspects: protection, healing, optimization and configuration. The overall goal of this research is to improve the correlation of the autonomic self* properties and doing so also enhance the overall self-management capacity of the desktop (autonomicity). We introduce the Circulatory Computing (CC) model, a self-managing system initiative based on the biological metaphor of the cardiovascular system, and use its concepts in the design and implementation of the architecture.

We have proposed a checklist-based usability inspection technique (WDP - Web Design Perspectives-Based Usability Evaluation) specific for Web applications' usability evaluation and we are following an experimentation-based methodology to support its development and improvement. This paper describes an observational study conducted, aimed at eliciting how inspectors apply the WDP technique. We discuss the quantitative and qualitative results of the result and their impact on improving the WDP technique. We analyzed the qualitative data using the procedures from the Grounded Theory (GT) method. © 2009 IEEE.
