Economic and social issues are pointed out as Software engineering (SE) challenges for the next years, since the field needs to treat issues beyond the technical side. These challenges require analyzing the field of SE from another perspective. In this sense, the study of software ecosystems (SECOs) is an emerging discipline that investigates the relationships among companies in the software industry. Companies work cooperatively and competitively in order to achieve their strategic objectives. They must engage in a new perspective, now also including third parties motivations and movements in the ecosystem, besides their own business viewpoint. Inspired on properties of natural and business ecosystems, SECO covers technical and business aspects of software development as well as partnership among companies. In this paper, we undertake a review on SECOs status as an emerging research topic in SE community. We map what is currently known about SECOs and also analyze them in a three-dimensional perspective in SE, i.e., technical, business and social. We observed that SECOs research is concentrated in eight main areas in which the most relevant ones are open source software, ecosystem modeling, and business issues. This paper also contributes to summarize the body of knowledge and presents a research agenda in SECOs. © 2012 IEEE.

A major activity performed by the manager before starting a software project is tailoring its development process. Such activity requires information about the context under which the project will be executed, including organizational, project, and team characteristics. In addition, it also requires pondering many factors and evaluating all existing constraints. In this scenario, we claim that a balance between collaboration and discipline can be the drivers to tailor software development processes in order to meet project and organization needs. With the purpose of facilitating this balancing, it is possible to automate some of the steps to solve the problem, reducing the effort required to execute this task and improving the obtained process. Therefore, this work presents an optimization-based approach where the balancing in process tailoring is defined, modeled and briefly analyzed. This approach uses collaboration and discipline as utility functions to select the most appropriate process for a software development project, considering its current context. © 2010 IEEE.

Since systems and software development processes present challenges beyond the technical side, Software Ecosystems (SECOs) have emerged as an approach to improve Software engineering (SE) mindset in industry, considering relations among companies and stakeholders. Developing a system has been changed to designing and maintaining a platform and its interface in order to support multiple products developed by a set of distributed and different third-part developers. This fact changes software industry because it requires linking an architectural, a business and a social-based environment in an integrated way and it focuses on software reuse processes. This concern motivated a proposal of a framework for SECOs management and engineering called ReuseECOS. The approach aims at outlining a set of steps that combines those three bases (or dimensions) of SECOs and joins different perspectives in SECOs research literature through a survey. In this paper, the focus is on the last dimension, that is, the social one. A preliminary analysis, done on a Software Reuse Lab's SECOs at coppe/UFRJ, points out that concepts explored by researchers can be merged in a broader SE approach. © 2012 IEEE.

Neither traditional, agile or free/open software development models can be effective to all projects contexts. We claim that collaboration and discipline can be the driver to tailor software development processes to meet projects and organizations needs. The paper addresses an approach to behavior testing in object oriented systems. This approach is used in the MEMPHIS project (C.M.I. Werner et al., 1997) and emphasis on state based testing. The key elements are the generation of testing sequences based on the state transition diagram to test the system objects and the creation of testing scenarios, which allow the verification of object integration.

As software evolves, analysis and design models should be modified, correspondingly. In this scenario, one of the main problems is to detect which elements should be changed due to a given change. This paper presents an approach that applies data mining over a versioned UML repository in order to detect change patterns among model elements at different abstraction levels. These patterns are presented to the software engineer together with contextual information obtained from a change control system, so he can decide the software evolution task at hand.

The treatment of economic and social issues in Software engineering was pointed out as a challenge in the coming years. Organizations have opened up their platforms and assets to others, including partners and third-party developers around the world, generating software ecosystems (SECOs). SECOs research can contribute to minimize nontechnical barriers of software reuse in industry because it explores potential relations among companies and stakeholders. However, an inhibitor is the complexity in defining value for reusable assets. This paper presents an extension of the Brechó-EcoSys environment to support components negotiations in reuse repositories. The focus is on complementing the stakeholders' value proposition and realization, as well as incorporating a nontechnical mechanism in components repositories.

Economic and social issues were pointed out as Software engineering (SE) challenges for the next years, since the field needs to treat issues beyond the technical side, which requires observing it in another perspective. In this sense, Software Ecosystems (SECOs) have emerged as an approach to improve software reuse in global software development (GSD) industry considering relations among companies and stakeholders around the world. Companies and organizations have opened up their platforms and artifacts to others, including partners and third-part developers. This scenario changes the traditional software industry and requires mature research in software architecture, component-based software engineering and software product line (SPL) in a global market and business environment. So, GSD requires linking an architectural, a business and a social-based environment in an integrated way, as well as a focus on SECO-based management and engineering. This concern motivated a proposal of a "3+1" framework for SECOs management and engineering called Reuse ECOS. The approach aims at outlining a set of steps that combines those three dimensions and joins different perspectives in SECOs literature from a survey through a research strategy and a solution proposal for GSD with SECO and SPL. It was observed that SECO concepts can be merged in a broader GSD approach in SE industry.

Information Technology (IT) supports companies' business processes and decision making through the use of technologies and tools that are provided by suppliers. Companies that are suppliers and consumers establish relationships through contracts of purchasing products and consulting, for example. These relationships, i.e., the companies involved and the information exchanged between the parties are considered elements of Software Ecosystems (SECOs). All of these elements can be considered SECO assets and need to be supported via SECO governance since their organization and evolution represent an IT Architecture. So, IT companies or their IT divisions can use the ISO/IEC 19770 standard for Software Asset Management (SAM) in order to control costs and optimize software investments. In this sense, this paper describes a SECO Governance approach for enabling an IT Architecture based on SAM. © 2013 IEEE.
