The importance of socio-technical resources for software ecosystems management

Software Ecosystem (SECO) is often understood as a set of actors interacting among themselves and manipulating artifacts with the support of a common technology platform. Usually, SECO approaches can be designed as an environment whose component repository is gathering stakeholders as well as software products and components. By manipulating software artifacts, a technical network emerges from interactions made over the component repository in order to reuse artifacts, improving code quality, downloading, selling, buying etc. Although technical repositories are essential to store SECO’s artifacts, the interaction among actors in an emerging social network is a key factor to strengthen the SECO’s through increasing actor’s participation, e.g., developing new software, reporting bugs, and communicating with suppliers. In the SECO context, both the internal and external actors keep the platform’s components updated and documented, and even support requirements and suggestions for new releases and bug fixes. However, those repositories often lack resources to support actors’ relationships and consequently to improve the reuse processes by stimulating actors’ interactions, information exchange and better understanding on how artifacts are manipulated by actors. In this paper, we focused on investigating SECO as component repositories that include socio-technical resources. As such, we present a survey that allowed us to identify the relevance of each resource for a SECO based on component repositories, initially focused on the Brazilian scenario. This paper also describes the analysis of the data collected in that survey. Information of other SECO elements extracted from the data is also presented, e.g., the participants’ profile and how they behave within a SECO. A variation of the classical clock synchronization problem is to synchronize clocks with an error that is proportinal to their distance in the network. Among several applications, gradient clock synchronization in wireless sensor networks can yield precise time coordination of packet transmissions, allowing for time-based collision free transmission scheduling. In this paper, we propose a simple and robust gradient clock synchronization (RGCS) algorithm designed for wireless sensor networks. The algorithm is fully distributed and operates independently of network topology, network routing and has no parameters to tune. It also does not require strict timing or reliability in clock synchronization messages or any global time reference. In particular, RGCS is based on a running average of logical clock rates and addresses specific aspects of gradient synchronization, such as estimating the logical clock of neighbors. We evaluate the algorithm through realistic simulations in various scenarios to illustrate the benefits of our approach. We also compare our results with GTSP a prominent gradient clock synchronization algorithm. Our results indicates that RCGS can operate adequately under high loss rates (50%) and high variability in the period of synchronization messages.

One of the most popular approaches to work with software reuse is component-based software engineering (CBSE). Despite a strategic importance in the global economy and the existent component repositories, the promised benefits of CBSE could not be broadly evaluated until now due to the lack of mature and well-established component marketplaces. Moreover, to create and maintain these markets, historical data and value considerations can be strategies to investigate. This paper proposes a value-based approach to address these strategies, Brecho-VCM, focusing on the stakeholders' value realization and on building a value chain.

Organizations open up their software platforms and reusable assets to others, including partners and third-party developers around the world, creating software ecosystems (SECOs). It can contribute to minimize nontechnical barriers of software reuse in industry because it explores potential benefits from the relations among companies and stakeholders. An inhibitor is the complexity in defining value for reusable assets in a scenario where producers try to meet customers' expectations, and vice-versa. This paper presents a value-based mechanism to support component negotiation and socialization processes in a reuse repository in the SECO context as an extension of the Brechó-EcoSys environment. Social resources were integrated into the mechanism in order to aid component negotiation. An evaluation of the negotiation mechanism was performed, based on an analysis of its elements and functions against critical factors in the negotiation within a SECO, identified in a previous systematic literature review. In addition, an analysis of the social resources supporting the negotiation mechanism was performed against popular sociotechnical elements for SECOs, identified in a previous survey with experts in the field.

The Metaverse is very challenging to implement solutions for eXtended Reality applications (XR apps), due to the combination of complex concerns that should be addressed: multiple users with non-traditional input and output devices, different hardware platforms that should be addressed, forceful interactive rates, and experimental interaction techniques, among other issues. Therefore, this work aims to present a Software Product Line (SPL)-based approach to support the development of Web XR apps. More specifically, we define a features model that represents similarities and variables (domain analysis); we defined a core composed of generic and reusable software artifacts (domain design); and we developed an interface to support the instantiation of a Web XR app family, named MetaSee Features Model Editor (domain implementation). This approach integrates with a component of the MetaSEE architecture (Metaverse for Software engineering Education). A preliminary assessment found that Features Model has conceptual consistency from the point of view of the complexity of Web XR Apps multimodal interaction. As future work, features model and artifacts will be increased with improvements and an evaluation with a significant number of participants will be performed.

Many components are usually created within a Domain engineering (DE) process. These components may exchange a great number of messages among them, and many times this interaction occurs within a specific group of components. The more messages the components exchange, the more complex the domain architecture becomes, thus compromising its understandability, maintainability and ultimately its reusability. This paper presents some elements of a components grouping technique that aims to identify and propose solutions to components coupling problems. This technique is being proposed within a domain engineering process called CBD-Arch-DE focused on component-based architectural design. © 2005 IEEE.

Considering the computer science challenge related to quality in technology development, the teaching and learning process of Software engineering (SE) takes an important role because it impacts the formation of human resources. However, SE does not explore the broader development and use of didactic material such as games. These resources can propitiate an experience that reflects typical situations of real world and motivate students. This paper presents UbiRE, a game to understand Requirements engineering in the context of ubiquitous systems. Its design, development and initial evaluation experience is discussed from a development process of educational game perspective, contributing to improve this process in the SE education scenario.

Collaboration networks are social networks in which relationships represent some kind of professional collaboration. The study of collaboration networks can help identify members that are important or influential within a given community. This work is divided into two parts. The first part is a study of the topological properties of two collaboration networks: the global collaboration network and the Brazilian collaboration network of authors of scientific papers within the area of computer science. The second part presents a ranking metric for vertices based on the intensities of their relationships. Using the proposed metric and other more classical metrics, we rank the researchers in Brazil in computer science. The proposed metric was compared with subjective evaluation of researchers made by CNPq. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed metric in identifying influential researchers when compared to another metrics in the literature.
