Conveyor belts are commonly used in the mining industry for efficient material transport. However, they are prone to failures such as idler anomalies, belt tears, and misalignment. Current monitoring systems only evaluate the conveyor or idle belt's condition at the installation point. This study proposes a method to detect faults in conveyor belts, specifically idler anomalies and belt deviation, using two IMUs installed at the lateral extremities of the belt to evaluate its health along its route. In a reduced-scale conveyor belt, we conducted experiments by collecting gyroscopes and accelerometer data in various scenarios, including normal conditions and anomaly situations. We modified the idlers' physical structure or changed the belt tracks to create these scenarios. We used similarity analysis techniques to compare the data collected and performed statistical hypothesis analysis to observe the influence of the anomaly scenarios on the gyroscope and accelerometer data. We used Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) for gyroscope data to compare ground truth with anomaly scenarios. For the acceleration data, we performed vibration analysis by converting the time domain data to the frequency using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and evaluating the difference in spectral density between the reference and anomaly data. Statistical hypothesis analysis revealed that anomaly scenar-ios influenced the gyroscope x-axis and z-axis more. According to the spectral density analysis of the accelerometer, it was revealed that belt misalignment on the y-axis may be detected. © 2023 IEEE.

Early recognition of clinical deterioration (CD) has vital importance in patients’ survival from exacerbation or death. Electronic health records (EHRs) data have been widely employed in Early Warning Scores (EWS) to measure CD risk in hospitalized patients. Recently, EHRs data have been utilized in Machine Learning (ML) models to predict mortality and CD. The ML models have shown superior performance in CD prediction compared to EWS. Since EHRs data are structured and tabular, conventional ML models are generally applied to them, and less effort is put into evaluating the artificial neural network’s performance on EHRs data. Thus, in this article, an extremely boosted neural network (XBNet) is used to predict CD, and its performance is compared to eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and random forest (RF) models. For this purpose, 103,105 samples from thirteen Brazilian hospitals are used to generate the models. Moreover, the principal component analysis (PCA) is employed to verify whether it can improve the adopted models’ performance. The performance of ML models and Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS), an EWS candidate, are evaluated in CD prediction regarding the accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and geometric mean (G-mean) metrics in a 10-fold cross-validation approach. The rapid development of Internet of Things (IoT) technology has enabled the widespread deployment of health monitoring systems. Traditionally, the health monitoring system has been limited by centralized processing and storage in the cloud, leading to latency issues and potential data loss. This paper introduces a smart sleep monitoring system based on edge computing, utilizing microservices architecture and caching techniques. The proposed system employs edge computing to enable data processing closer to the source, reducing latency and improving real-time monitoring capabilities. Caching is employed to reduce database load and optimize random access memory (RAM) usage. This research addresses latency and response time challenges on IoT health monitoring platforms in environments with poor network quality while optimizing database load and resource usage on Jetson Nano as the edge computing device. Using Electrocardiogram (ECG) data as input, the proposed system yields impressive performance metrics. The research results indicate that the proposed system can increase throughput by 26.92 KB/s, reduce response time by 18.8 ms, and decrease latency by 20.86 ms compared to the previous work. Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) integration reduces CPU usage by approximately 40% and RAM usage by about 81.24%.

Recently, cooking oil has been widely discussed on social media. Many people ask how to analyze this phenomenon, one of which is using a sentiment analysis application on Twitter that performs a scientific analysis of the tweets of this media user. This study aims to test the performance of the sentiment analysis algorithm utilizing the Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) algorithm from Twitter, which is used to classify the types of tweets processed in 2000 tweets. The study shows the results of the confusion matrix, accuracy, and precision. The study obtained a fairly good accuracy and precision performance of 84%, which occurred at a learning rate of 1e-6 and epoch 5. The author also discusses the factors that affect the performance of BERT, such as;pre-processing, data quantity, and data variation. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper provides an examination of the impact of lightning strikes on a 220 kV double circuit (D/C) high voltage transmission line in Bhutan. The study employs the ATP-EMTP software to identify the leading causes of transmission line faults, which are primarily attributed to lightning strikes. Since the transmission lines run through areas in Bhutan that are prone to severe weather conditions and lightning strikes, they are vulnerable to damage, leading to an unreliable power supply. To address this issue, the author proposes several solutions, such as enhancing the tower footing resistance and installing line surge arresters. The author also created models of different transmission towers and analyzed an 18 km stretch of the transmission line that is highly susceptible to lightning strikes. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper develops a system based on cyber-physical concepts to support robots in tasks that require cooperative work and information sharing. The work's inspiration is the need of the 4.0 industry for cobots visiting different workstations to assist human workers, for tools and raw material transportation, and other tasks. As in any industrial environment, unexpected events may occur, and the cobots must face them, reducing their effects on the production line. In this work, multiple robots (MR) managed by a system with cyber-physical (CP) features cooperate in an experimental dynamic environment to safely accomplish several tasks. For this, the robots must visit targets (analogous to workstations) in an orderly way, while one support robot must deal with oil stains on the environment's floor detected along the robots' navigation (unexpected event). The proposed CP-MR system is evaluated through experimental results allowing a performance analysis.

The rapid proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices has posed significant challenges for network resource allocation and management. In this paper, we propose a novel methodology for efficient resource allocation in Software-Defined Networks (SDNs) to meet the unique requirements of IoT applications. Our approach leverages the flexibility and programmability of SDN to dynamically allocate network resources based on the specific needs of IoT devices. Our proposal combines reinforcement learning with dynamic resource allocation, demonstrating its effectiveness in optimizing resource allocation and enhancing network performance. The results highlight the potential of our approach to addressing the resource challenges in SDN-based IoT environments. The proposed method obtains results superior to 30% of throughput in comparison to a traditional resource allocation in SDN to IoT applications. © 2023 University of Split, FESB.

Distributed Acoustic Sensors (DAS) are able to measure dynamic strain and temperature signals quantitatively along several kilometers of optical fiber using the properties of backscattering light. A drawback of DAS is the sensing resolution of around 1 meter long. This paper analyses the use of DAS as a vibration sensor for a thin plate structure using an acoustic excitation. A coiled method of arranging the sensing optical fibers enhances the measured signal and using a calibration method, the strain in the sensed region is obtained. The method can be used to characterize structures acoustically allowing the structure to detect the direction and reconstruct nearby acoustic events. Acoustic excitations were performed using a speaker at 1 meter distance to a 1 millimeter thick free-free 40 centimeters by 73 centimeter instrumented stainless steel plate inside an anechoic chamber. Results measured using reference microphones and accelerometers were compared to the optical fiber sensor through a Finite Element Model. The results demonstrate that the optical fiber system is able to measure the frequency response with an average 54 dB sound pressure level sound source chirp signal for flexural modes with a clear differentiation between angles of incidence up to 500 Hz.

In the rapidly evolving field of Augmented Reality (AR), delivering real-time, immersive experiences places a significant demand on computational resources, particularly in the context of video-based Artificial Intelligence (AI) inference tasks. Some solutions explorate optimize the tasks using the potential of Mobile Edge Computing (MEC), in which MEC brings the advantages of reduced latency and network congestion, which are critical for AR systems. In this work, we designed a novel algorithm named AR-MEC Optimization for the distribution of AI inference tasks among edge servers while considering several factors including task complexity, server capacity, and network conditions. Our approach not only ensures low-latency responses but also improves overall system efficiency and the user's Quality of Experience (QoE). Experimental results demonstrate that our unified approach significantly outperforms traditional cloud-based methods in terms of response time and computational efficiency, thereby highlighting the potential of MEC-assisted AR systems for real-world applications. © 2023 University of Split, FESB.

Immersive learning has gained significant attention with the rising trend of spatial computing, particularly in the after-pandemic era. Numerous research has explored the potential of immersive learning in higher education, primarily on the educational sector. However, prior research has frequently focused too narrowly on the effects of technology and neglected to address the crucial element influencing successful immersive learning in higher education. This study seeks to pinpoint the crucial element contributing to the development of immersive learning experiences. The methodology uses a systematic literature review (SLR) from 2018 up to 2023 to investigate the critical factors of immersive Learning in Higher Education. From the 728 papers initially retrieved, 274 were considered potential candidates, and ultimately, 86 articles were selected based on their relevance to the research question. The results reveal that the critical factors include learning design, technology, immersion, engagement, interactivity, and usability. Academic interests will benefit from this SLR's consequences as institutions create models for designing suitable immersive learning, especially within the context of higher education. © 2023 IEEE.
