Many of the Telecommunication Systems used by companies of the Electric Sector (Utilities) are essentials and causes direct impact on the main business, being indispensable that it work without interruptions. As some of the outages on the telecommunications are caused by associated energy systems, every improvement done on these systems affects the process chain. But as those systems act on the background, sometimes they hide systemic problems. This situation can be seen currently in a specific type of battery that is common in this area. Looking for to solve this problem, Eletrobras Furnas has been researching, together with telecommunicationsresearch and developmentcenter (cpqd), the application of the lithium-ion battery technology, a pioneer initiative in Latin America. This work presents details about the research and the strategy adopted by the company since 2005 to introduce this technology in Brazil.

The problem of lightpath provisioning in WDM optical networks has been extensively studied to reduce cost and blocking, but there is still a need of investigating this problem from a power consumption perspective. In this paper, we introduce a novel algorithm for IP/MPLS over WDM networks based on a reduced auxiliary graph that limits the solution space and captures the power consumption of lightpath provisioning. Results derived via simulation demonstrate that our strategy is energy efficient and that it is able to produce acceptable blocking ratio which are close to values produced by algorithms oriented to the reduction of blocking.

The project of wireless communication systems with the purpose to minimize the bit error rate is a current problem and it is motivated increasingly by the growing demand for higher data rates. In this sense, this work proposes a frequency, time and space diversity technique, which applies a space-time code with block repetitions such that space-frequency diversity is obtained, combined with the time spreading of OFDM symbol through Hadamard transform. Simulations showed that performance gain was achieved in high Doppler frequency scenarios followed by improved results at degraded frequency selective fading channels modeled by Rayleigh distributions.
