This work describe the research to the development of a remote monitoring system to obtain premature failures diagnoses in stationary lead-acid batteries (flooded and valve regulated) by measurements of its internal resistance and voltage. All the management and analysis of these measurements are included as a new feature of the "Battery Management Software", presented at INTELEC 2010.

This paper presents a new approach to upgrade the current passive optical network (PON) by using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) in the standardized optical grid of gigabit PON (In-band WDM PON overlay). The aim is to increase the number of optical distribution networks (ODNs) fed by a single fiber while preserving the users bandwidth. In this approach four downstream (DS) wavelengths signals are transmitted from an optical line terminal (OLT) to four different ODNs using the standard DS PON spectrum ranging from 1480 to 1500 nm. The upstream (US) signals from the four different ODNs are also wavelength multiplexed within the standardized US PON spectrum ranging from 1270 to 1330 nm. Proofs of concept are presented in a 20 km PON serving 32 ONTs in order to demonstrate the feasibility of this proposal. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper presents the implementation of an IPv6 Testbed performed on the Experimental Network of GIGA Project and some experimental results, where the use of IPv6 integrated to current and emerging technologies used in LAN, MAN and WAN -10 Gigabit Ethernet, DWDM and GPON was tested. These protocols and technologies are part of a brand new technological scenario that has great perspectives to be more and more adopted in the coming years.

This work describes the experimental demonstration of a 80 km-reach PON system, with a 1:128 split ratio, using a conventional Gigabit-Capable Passive Optical Network (GPON) equipment. The experiment was made possible by the use of bidirectional 1310/1490 nm semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) as well as by a change on the medium access control (MAC) protocol. Results for packet-loss ratio and power budget are given as a function of split ratio and network reach of a field-trial PON. © 2011 IEEE.

In this work we propose a novel wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) configuration. The system is based on a colorless optical source employing the injection of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) into a reflective SOA (R-SOA). In addition, optical detection at the ONTs is carried out by PIN based receivers, without decision threshold level adjustment (DTLA). We investigated the system performance for four directly modulated 1.25 Gb/s channels at the C-band in the presence of chromatic dispersion and experimentally demonstrated error free operation for downstream traffic in a 20 km reach, with 1.0 dB penalty. © 2011 IEEE.

The research was conducted with 14 lithium-ion batteries acquired in the international market from two different manufacturers: 4 batteries of manufacturer A (type A) and 10 of manufacturer B (type B). The electrical characteristics of battery type A are 42 Ah/48 V and the type B is 100 Ah/48 V. Tests were conducted to assess the electrical performance and safety.

Social media (i.e., Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, YouTube) and other services with user-generated content have made a staggering amount of information (and misinformation) available. Government officials seek to leverage these resources to improve services and communication with citizens. Yet, the sheer volume of social data streams generates substantial noise that must be filtered. Nonetheless, potential exists to identify issues in real time, such that emergency management can monitor and respond to issues concerning public safety. By detecting meaningful patterns and trends in the stream of messages and information flow, events can be identified as spikes in activity, while meaning can be deciphered through changes in content. This paper presents findings from a pilot study we conducted between June and December 2010 with government officials in Arlington, Virginia (and the greater National Capitol Region around Washington, DC) with a view to understanding the use of social media by government officials as well as community organizations, businesses and the public. We are especially interested in understanding social media use in crisis situations (whether severe or fairly common, such as traffic or weather crises). © 2011 ACM.

This work describes a study to obtain premature failures diagnoses in stationary lead acid batteries (flooded and valve regulated) by measurements of its internal resistance. The main goal was to obtain a methodology to estimate the future conditions of the batteries and replace then before failures. To achieve this goal we planned and executed some accelerated aging tests in different models of flooded and VRLA batteries used by LIGHT in cpqd's Batteries Laboratory. By analyze of the records, was developed a mathematical algorithm to predict the state of degradation of 2 V lead acid flooded and VRLA batteries for the next 24 months. From this prediction algorithm, based on conductance and/or impedance measurements, was developed a software implemented in WEB, JAVA language and SQL Server Database.
