Bringing intelligent decision-making to industrial facilities involves coordinating a complex ecosystem of applications with different performance requirements that often depend on each other. A promising approach to managing this complexity is leveraging loosely coupled software architectures, such as microservices, with distributed infrastructures, such as the Edge-to-Cloud Continuum. The order in which microservices are provisioned in the Edge-to-Cloud Continuum can significantly impact outcomes when distributing tasks to agents. Poor provisioning orderings can lead to non-critical microservices overburdening servers with lower latency while leaving latencysensitive microservices with no option but to run on more distant servers. To address this challenge, we introduce a novel provisioning ordering mechanism within a Multi-Armed Bandit (MAB) algorithm, helping to conquer the problem. Simulations based on real-world specifications indicate a $\mathbf{3 8 \%}$ reduction in latency violations and up to 6% decrease in power consumption compared to an unordered approach.

Industrial facilities are increasingly moving towards integrating sensors and actuators to enable real-time decision-making. The realization of this vision calls for the use of cutting-edge approaches at both the infrastructure and application levels. In the former, the Edge-to-Cloud Continuum has emerged with the idea of distributing computing resources across multiple tiers, opportunistically leveraging the proximity of edge servers to deliver low latency and the scalability of cloud data centers to handle large volumes of data. In the latter, microservices provide a flexible, lightweight way to deploy and manage complex applications. Despite the growing research interest in coordinating these two trends, existing solutions typically do not address certain key aspects. First, they overlook that individual microservices can be shared by multiple machines located at various industrial sites, each with distinct latency needs. Second, they fall short in jointly reducing microservice latency and infrastructure power consumption. To address these gaps, we introduce a novel Multi-Armed Bandit (MAB) algorithm that optimizes microservice provisioning in the Edge-to-Cloud Continuum that considers these two aspects. Simulations based on real-world specifications show that our approach reduces latency by 72% and power consumption by 19% compared to a Pareto-based MAB baseline.

The Hyperledger Indy blockchain platform, aimed at identity management networks, has gained importance, but the traditional, manual approach to network management is slow and error-prone. To reduce this, this paper presents MinIndy, a framework designed to automate the installation, configuration, and management of Indy networks without sacrificing performance. Therefore, MinIndy is a viable alternative for individuals and organizations looking to adopt Indy blockchain networks with less manual intervention. It was evaluated through the performance of its network and the results show that the network built with the framework has no loss of performance compared to one built without it.

Dissipative cell balancing generates heat during its operation. Current techniques do not guarantee optimal balance of battery pack energy, requiring a high-cost Battery Management System (BMS) solution and wasting energy in the form of heat. Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicles uses the combustion engine to recharge the battery. Therefore, this feature requires a BMS balancing system capable of optimizing battery capacity and still be energy efficient. In this way, a non-dissipative balancing system would be interesting, especially if an algorithm works with the former non-dissipative balancing method, which efficiently determines which cells are unbalanced. In this paper, a methodology is proposed to perform non-dissipative balance of lithium-ion cells. This method considers which cells inside a certain range are considered balanced and cells outside this range are considered unbalanced. The range is given by the median of the cells terminal voltage summed with a threshold defined by experimental tests. Due the non-dissipative method presented herein is conceived through Flyback topology, the cells above this range are discharged and their extra energy is employed to charge the lowest charged cells, which were below the range. Simulation results which after the first 5 hours of balancing, the maximum difference does not exceed 1% and the standard deviation 0.5% until the end of the simulation, reducing SOC standard deviation by more than 33 times in one day operation. This result shows the strategy is promising to make a more efficient balancing mechanism for Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicles. © 2019 SAE International. All rights reserved.

This paper presents the technical implementation characteristics of a Voltage Controlled Ring Oscillator (VCRO) with ring architecture using Single Event Effects (SEE) mitigation techniques. By applying the Cadence Virtuoso Analog Design Environment (ADE), the project was implemented at layout level using CMOS UMC 0.18 µm technology based on closed geometry components in accordance with the DARE (Design Against Radiation Effects) standard. Results obtained through simulation indicate current = 14mA, phase noise (PN@1M) = -83.37 dBc/Hz and area = 12.52 µm 2 .

research achievements in hollow-core photonic crystal fibers technology allow ascertaining such fibers as outstanding platforms for delivering high-power laser beams. Indeed, the key property underlying the success of this family of optical fibers for high-power beam delivery is their capability of efficiently transmitting light through empty space with minimal interaction with the fiber microstructure. In this context, here we widen the framework of hollow-core fiber-based beam delivery applications by demonstrating their utilization as promising platforms for Power-over-Fiber systems. Thus, we report on the use of a tubular-lattice hollow-core fiber to deliver a watt-level continuous-wave laser beam onto a photovoltaic converter and activate a representative camera circuit. We believe that the experiments reported herein allow identifying hollow-core fibers as eligible candidates for next-generation Power-over-Fiber devices potentially able to lift the power restrictions of current solid-core fiber-based Power-over-Fiber systems. © 2022, CC BY.

This paper presents the development of power electronics and control of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) used to provide ancillary services in distribution grids with high penetration of renewable sources. It is presented an overview for the BMS (Battery Management System) development which comprises the definition of the cell model, acquisition method of cell parameters through laboratory tests, presentation of SoC (State of Charge), SoH (State of Health) and balancing algorithms, development and implementation hardware and firmware. Purpose: To investigate the use of a Vision Transformer (ViT) to reconstruct/denoise GABA-edited magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) from a quarter of the typically acquired number of transients using spectrograms. Theory and Methods: A quarter of the typically acquired number of transients collected in GABA-edited MRS scans are pre-processed and converted to a spectrogram image representation using the Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT). The image representation of the data allows the adaptation of a pre-trained ViT for reconstructing GABA-edited MRS spectra (Spectro-ViT). The Spectro-ViT is fine-tuned and then tested using in vivo GABA-edited MRS data. The Spectro-ViT performance is compared against other models in the literature using spectral quality metrics and estimated metabolite concentration values. Results: The Spectro-ViT model significantly outperformed all other models in four out of five quantitative metrics (mean squared error, shape score, GABA+/water fit error, and full width at half maximum). The metabolite concentrations estimated (GABA+/water, GABA+/Cr, and Glx/water) were consistent with the metabolite concentrations estimated using typical GABA-edited MRS scans reconstructed with the full amount of typically collected transients. Conclusion: The proposed Spectro-ViT model achieved state-of-the-art results in reconstructing GABA-edited MRS, and the results indicate these scans could be up to four times faster. © 2023, CC BY.
