There is growing interest in the use of context-awareness as a technique for developing pervasive computing applications that are flexible, adaptable, and capable of acting autonomously on behalf of users. However, context-awareness introduces various software engineering challenges, as well as privacy and usability concerns. In this paper, we present a conceptual framework and software infrastructure that together address known software engineering challenges, and enable further practical exploration of social and usability issues by facilitating the prototyping and fine-tuning of context-aware applications.

Most recently developed context-aware software applications make unrealistic assumptions about the quality of the available context information, which can lead to inappropriate actions by the application and frustration on the part of the user. Here, we explore the problem of imperfect context information and some of its causes, and propose a novel approach for modelling incomplete and inaccurate information. Additionally, we present a discussion of our experiences in developing a context-aware communication application, highlighting design issues that are pertinent when developing applications that rely on imperfect context information.

The MOF (Meta Object Facility) query, view and transformation RFP, issued by OMG will result in a key enabling technology for model-driven development of large distributed systems. We have designed a transformation language which will meet the requirements of this RFP, and several others besides. The language is declarative and patterns based. Transformation descriptions are explicitly reusable and modular. Rules that make up such descriptions may be aspect-driven, allowing for transformations to be written to address semantic concepts rather than structural features. This paper introduces the language and its rationale, and shows how it is used to solve s small but non-trivial MDA problem.

In the move from the industrial to the knowledge economy, organisations have shifted the focus from the improvement of their production processes to the improvement of their collaborative processes in a bid to optimise the effectiveness of their human capital. Our goal is to provide stakeholders of knowledge-intensive business processes with information about the performance of their process that allows them to make practical improvements to the process to gain a competitive edge. In this paper, we present the framework that we have developed to evaluate the tender response process for its organisational knowledge creation capability. We report here on the progress of our research and our interim findings.

The Meta-Object Facility (MOF) provides a standardized framework for object-oriented models. An instance of a MOF model contains objects and links whose interfaces are entirely derived from that model. Information contained in these objects can be accessed directly, however, in order to realize the Model-Driven Architecture@trade; (MDA), we must have a mechanism for representing and evaluating structured queries on these instances. The MOF Query Language (MQL) is a language that extends the UML's Object Constraint Language (OCL) to provide more expressive power, such as higher-order queries, parametric polymorphism and argument polymorphism. Not only do these features allow more powerful queries, but they also encourage a greater degree of modularization and re-use, resulting in faster prototyping and facilitating automated integrity analysis. This paper presents an overview of the motivations for developing MQL and also discusses its abstract syntax, presented as a MOF model, and its semantics.

There is rapidly increasing interest in Australia in on-line sharing of information stored in corporate databases, especially within and between staff of independent government agencies. Biological collections databases and population health GIS are good examples of the frequent situation where database custodians are looking for dynamic, distributed, heterogenous federated information system models for information sharing within loosely constituted communities. This paper describes a security model for authentication and access control to federated systems. The model supports single sign-on for users; a high level of autonomy for database custodians; and a low maintenance overhead. The model's implementation using PKI and Web technology is described.

The seamless integration of people, devices and computation will soon become part of our daily life. Sensors, actuators, wireless networks and ubiquitous devices powered by intelligent computation will blend into future environments in which people will live. Despite showing great promise, research into future computing technologies is often far removed from the needs of users. The nature of such future systems is often too obtrusive, seemingly denying their purpose. Furthermore, most research on context-aware environments and ubiquitous computing conducted so far has concentrated on supporting people while at work. This paper presents research issues that need to be addressed to enhance the quality of life for people living in context-aware homes. We survey current research and present strategies that facilitate the diffusion of information technology into homes in order to inspire positive emotions, encourage effortless exploration of content and help occupants to achieve tasks at hand.

While developments in distributed object computing environments, such as the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) by the Object Management Group (2000) and the Telecommunication Intelligent Network Architecture (TINA) by H. Mulder (2002), have enabled interoperability between domains in large open distributed systems, managing the resources within such systems has become an increasingly complex task. This challenge has been considered for several years within the distributed systems management research community and policy-based management has recently emerged as a promising solution. Large evolving enterprises present a significant challenge for policy-based management partly due to the requirement to support both mutual transparency and individual autonomy between domains according to C. Bidan and V. Issarny (1998), but also because the fluidity and complexity of interactions occurring within such environments requires an ability to cope with the existence of multiple, potentially inconsistent policies. This paper discusses the need for providing both dynamic (run-time) and static (compile-time) conflict detection and resolution for policies in such systems and builds on our earlier conflict detection work (Dunlop et al., 2001, 2002) to introduce the methods for conflict resolution in large open distributed systems.

Existing techniques for the transfer of information in and out of model-based repositories, and in particular the XMI format, are designed for expedient machine processing, and have significant drawbacks for human users. The article describes a system that automatically generates a producer and consumer for a human-usable textual notation corresponding to a given information model. This HUTN system is based on the Meta-Object Facility, an OMG standard for the definition of information models and the subsequent mapping of these models to CORBA interfaces. The primary design goal of the system is human usability, and this is achieved through consideration of the successes and failures of common programming languages. The system uses an abstract base syntax that is applied to all models, and allows for user alteration of the language through the provision of several language customisations.

Modern enterprise inter-connectivity should also enable a market for third-party value-added information resellers. Resellers can offer integrated information products, made out of information sourced dynamically from multiple heterogeneous enterprise information resources. The Internet Marketplace is an information infrastructure designed for this environment. In this paper we address the design of inter-enterprise information systems by introducing a UML architectural template for services and applications built on the Internet Marketplace information infrastructure. The template is applied to a particular case study, involving a federation of state and local government agencies. The Internet Marketplace Template addresses some of the unique constraints of this type of application, offering application designers a tool for modelling and designing inter-enterprise applications that make use of the information infrastructure. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.
