This paper outlines an awareness application called Ticketape. Tickertape is a tool that displays event notifications in the form of scrolling messages across a single-line window. The Tickertape message window provides an interface to a world of highly tailorable transient information. We provide an overview of Tickertape features and then discuss its specific use within a semi-commercial research organisation. We note that although Tickertape's evolution was incidental rather than purposeful, it is being extensively used within our organisation. Usage data and interviews suggest that there is a select core group of users who use Tickertape for both work and leisure. Other more casual users use the tool sporadically for leisure purposes only. We highlight our current goal which is to optimise Tickertape usage within the work environment. Our long-term vision involves the incorporation of Tickertape into Orbit-Gold, our collaborative working environment and to make the tool accessible to external organisations.

The article reports on initial investigation into a software architecture for component systems. Described is a geometrically based, cellular framework for the organization of component computation and communication. These structures are called Cellular Component Manifolds. The starting point for this work is the observation that the concept of address space is a pervasive abstraction across all computing and communicating systems. Accordingly, a generalized model of an idealized address space is proposed. A particular geometry with a suitable algebraic structure is chosen to provide addressing within this model. This results in an n-dimensional, hierarchical, cellular aggregate address space that is also a vector space with "nice" properties. The address spare, when populated with suitable components, becomes a Cellular Component Manifold. A component system architecture is given. This software architecture consists of three major layers: component framework framework, component frameworks and components. In addition to providing a basis for component system organization, this structure natively supports a range of scientific and engineering applications. As an example, the architecture is applied to the problem of handoff management in wireless overlay networks.

We present a software architecture which facilitates nomadic computing in an open distributed computing environment. We introduce a model for the description of mobile objects (users, computers and application objects) and their types. The descriptions create an information base for protocols managing mobility of the mobile objects. We present an architecture of servers which extend a distributed computing environment to implement these mobility management protocols.

The Reference Model for Open distributed Processing provides a framework for building distributed heterogeneous applications and creates a good basis for building mobile (ubiquitous) computing applications. We analyse the requirements imposed by mobile computing on distributed environments and characterise adaptability strategies which can be applied in nomadic environments to cope with the quality of service changes due to user, computer or application mobility. We then describe the design of an architecture which extends the ODP architecture to provide support for mobile computing. We characterise the functionality of the architecture, the RPC semantics used for communication in this architecture as well as a prototype built in a CORBA environment.

The converging trend of relational database technology and object-oriented database technology results in object-relational database systems which extend the relational systems with add-on object features. Efforts from both academic research and industry have been directed into extended data type processing by fully functioned database systems. In this paper, we put forward an approach for realizing objectrelational systems by deploying current distributed database technology. The paper first discusses the object-relational data model and its query language. Then a hetrogeneous database architecture is presented for realizing object-relational technology by integrating relational and object-oriented database systems. Two main functions of the architecture: schema transformation and query translation are further discussed and correspondent algorithms are proposed. © 1997, Springer-Verlag. All rights reserved.

By integrating the many different technologies and approaches involved in electronic education and commerce, we can effectively support advanced applications in these areas. This paper describes an architecture which can be used to facilitate the specification, execution, and distribution of incremental trade documents among heterogeneous interchanges. We argue that the conventional, top-down, centralized approach to workflow, in its current state, is not suitable to support the undetermined nature of an advanced trade application. What this approach lacks is a unified object-oriented model which can be used to design interoperable trading systems with a single set of well-defined abstractions. This paper, in an attempt to overcome the limitations imposed by the conventional approach, presents an overview of principles relating to object interoperability, semantic heterogeneity, and the document-centric paradigm associated with trade documents. A view object model and its relevant components are also discussed.

The wOrlds project is concerned with developing next generation collaboration frameworks. We strongly believe that real progress in enhancing the usability of collaborative systems hinges on improving our understanding of work, and applying the resulting insights to development of collaborative work support frameworks. We are investigating the thesis that appropriate bases for such an approach can be drawn from existing results in sociology, specifically the work of sociologist Anselm Strauss, and his notion of social worlds (A. Strauss, 1993). We motivate and overview wOrlds, the collaborative environment we have built in order to explore our ideas and insights. We then critique wOrlds (and by implication, the class of systems known as MUDs of which it is a member), and point to future directions for investigation.

Until recently the World Wide Web (WWW) and associated browser technologies have provided no support for the delivery of continuous media in real time. Instead, files have been down-loaded completely and then played back. There are now some systems available that provide support for streaming of audio and/or video between WWW servers and clients. However the Internet comprises a vast range of networks and end systems with different characteristics, which together determine the level of continuous media service quality that can be supported for a given connection. A quality of service (QoS) model is required that will encompass the heterogeneity of the Internet environment. In this paper we present our approach to delivering continuous media in WWW environments, based on a model of end-to-end QoS management. We have developed an experimental implementation that permits real-time delivery of audio and video within the WWW. Significantly our implementation incorporates end-to-end QoS negotiation and QoS adaptation, which adjusts the delivery stream to match prevailing network and system conditions. We describe the design and implementation of our WWW-based QoS model. We then discuss some issues arising from our experience, including a proposal for future work based on a more open, object oriented architecture. © 1997 The British Computer Society,.

Open distributed processing aims to support cooperation within and between large-scale heterogeneous and autonomous computing environments. An inherent issue in such environments is enabling the interoperation of objects whose interfaces have been defined in different type models. In this paper, we present a type management system which provides a means for representing, storing, retrieving and translating types, and for expressing and evaluating relationships between types in a heterogeneous distributed computing environment. This system allows multiple type languages and models, and can relate types expressed in different ones. The type management system is designed to support the instantiation and dynamic binding of objects, run-time type checking of object interactions, and the discovery of new resources (e.g. services) within the system. Current approaches to interface definition in distributed systems are mainly based on the use of a single interface definition language (IDL). While this provides a level of common agreement about the types of system interfaces, the type models of existing IDLs are not rich enough to model either the overall architecture of a system or the behaviour of objects. We illustrate this by briefly describing some aspects of an enhanced type model with the emphasis on the model's impact on the design of the type management system. © 1997 The British Computer Society.

Outlines a semantic model for open distributed systems which provides a foundation for a corresponding architecture description language. This semantic model is based on architecture models reported by Berry et al. (1995) and in ISO/IEC 10746 (ODP), with a number of refinements to support abstraction and composition. The model is specifically designed to describe open distributed systems independent of implementation details such as communication protocols and middleware systems. The modelling concepts in the semantic model are: object (a model of an entity), event (a unit of interaction between an object and its environment), event relationship (a specification of behaviour defining the relationships amongst a set of events), interface (an abstraction of an object's interaction with its environment) and binding (a context for interaction between objects). The binding concept is particularly important because it can describe any kind of interaction in an open distributed system, ranging from remote procedure calls and multicasting to more complex, enterprise interactions. Special attention is given to the problem of composition and abstraction of events and behaviour in the model. This is needed to reflect the reuse, evolution and interworking requirements of open distributed systems. Our approach allows for the effective modelling of asynchrony, concurrency and complex flows of information in open distributed systems.
