Non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) has been a popular data analysis tool and has been widely applied in computer vision. However, conventional NMF methods cannot adaptively learn grouping structure froma *** paper proposes a non-negative low-rank and group-sparse matrix factorization (NLRGS) method to overcome this deficiency. Particularly, NLRGS captures the relationships among examples by constraining rank of the coefficients meanwhile identifies the grouping structure via group sparsity regularization. By both constraints, NLRGS boosts NMF in both classification and clustering. However, NLRGS is difficult to be optimized because it needs to deal with the low-rank constraint. To relax such hard constraint, we approximate the low-rank constraint with the nuclear norm and then develop an optimization algorithm for NLRGS in the frame of augmented Lagrangian method(ALM). Experimental results of both face recognition and clustering on four popular face datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of NLRGS in quantities. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) is a powerful dimension reduction method and has been widely used in many pattern recognition and computer vision problems. However, conventional NMF methods are neither robust enough as their loss functions are sensitive to outliers, nor discriminative because they completely ignore labels in a dataset. In this paper, we proposed a correntropy supervised NMF (CSNMF) to simultaneously overcome aforementioned deficiencies. In particular, CSNMF maximizes the correntropy between the data matrix and its reconstruction in low-dimensional space to inhibit outliers during learning the subspace, and narrows the minimizes the distances between coefficients of any two samples with the same class labels to enhance the subsequent classification performance. To solve CSNMF, we developed a multiplicative update rules and theoretically proved its convergence. Experimental results on popular face image datasets verify the effectiveness of CSNMF comparing with NMF, its supervised variants, and its robustified variants.

Complex cloud services rely on different elasticity control processes to deal with dynamic requirement changes and workloads. However, enforcing an elasticity control process to a cloud service does not always lead to an optimal gain in terms of quality or cost, due to the complexity of service structures, deployment strategies, and underlying infrastructure dynamics. Therefore, being able, a priori, to estimate and evaluate the relation between cloud service elasticity behavior and elasticity control processes is crucial for runtime choices of appropriate elasticity control processes. In this paper we present ADVISE, a framework for estimating and evaluating cloud service elasticity behavior. ADVISE gathers service structure, deployment, service runtime, control processes, and cloud infrastructure information. Based on this information, ADVISE utilizes clustering techniques to identify cloud elasticity behavior produced by elasticity control. Our experiments show that ADVISE can estimate the expected elasticity behavior, in time, for different cloud services thus being a useful tool to elasticity controllers for improving the quality of runtime elasticity control decisions. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

In this paper we present and analyze HSkip+, a self-stabilizing overlay network for nodes with arbitrary heterogeneous bandwidths. HSkip+ has the same topology as the Skip+ graph proposed by Jacob et al. [1] but its self-stabilization mechanism significantly outperforms the self-stabilization mechanism proposed for Skip+. Also, the nodes are now ordered according to their bandwidths and not according to their identifiers. Various other solutions have already been proposed for overlay networks with heterogeneous bandwidths, but they are not self-stabilizing. In addition to HSkip+ being self-stabilizing, its performance is on par with the best previous bounds on the time and work for joining or leaving a network of peers of logarithmic diameter and degree and arbitrary bandwidths. Also, the dilation and congestion for routing messages is on par with the best previous bounds for such networks, so that HSkip+ combines the advantages of both worlds. Our theoretical investigations are backed by simulations demonstrating that HSkip+ is indeed performing much better than Skip+ and working correctly under high churn rates. © 2014 IEEE.

Demand-side energy management improves robustness and efficiency in Smart Grids. Load-adjustment and load-shifting are performed to match demand to available supply. These operations come at a discomfort cost for consumers as their lifestyle is influenced when they adjust or shift in time their demand. Performance of demand-side energy management mainly concerns how robustness is maximized or discomfort is minimized. However, measuring and controlling the distribution of discomfort as perceived between different consumers provides an enriched notion of fairness in demand-side energy management that is missing in current approaches. This paper defines unfairness in demand-side energy management and shows how unfairness is measurable and controllable by software agents that plan energy demand in a decentralized fashion. Experimental evaluation using real demand and survey data from two operational Smart Grid projects confirms these findings.

Nonparametric density estimation is a fundamental problem of statistics and data mining. Even though kernel density estimation is the most widely used method, its performance highly depends on the choice of the kernel bandwidth, and it can become computationally expensive for large data sets. WTe present an adaptive sparse-grid-based density estimation method which discretizes the estimated density function on basis functions centered at grid points rather than on kernels centered at the data points. Thus, the costs of evaluating the estimated density function are independent from the number of data points. We give details on how to estimate density functions on sparse grids and develop a cross validation technique for the parameter selection. We show numerical results to confirm that our sparse-grid-based method is well-suited for large data sets, and, finally, employ our method for the classification of astronomical objects to demonstrate that it is competitive to current kernel-based density estimation approaches with respect to classification accuracy and runtime. The Carolo-Cup competition conducted for the eighth time this year, is an international student competition focusing on autonomous driving scenarios implemented on 1:10 scale car models. Three practical sub-competitions have to be realized in this context and represent a complex, interdisciplinary challenge. Hence, students have to cope with all core topics like mechanical development, electronic design, and programming as addressed usually by robotic applications. In this paper we introduce the competition challenges in detail and evaluate the results of all 13 participating teams from the 2014 competition. For this purpose, we analyze technical as well as non-technical configurations of each student group and derive best practices, lessons learned, and criteria as a precondition for a successful participation. Due to the comprehensive orientation of the Carolo-Cup, this knowledge can be applied on comparable projects and related competitions as well.

A number of approaches for endowing systems with self-Adaptive behavior have been proposed over the past years. Among such efforts, architecture-centric solutions with explicit representation of feedback loops have currently been advocated as a promising research landscape. Although noteworthy results have been achieved on some fronts, the lack of systematic representations of architectural knowledge and effective support for well-informed trade-off decisions still poses significant challenges when designing modern self-Adaptive systems. In this paper, we present a systematic and flexible representation of design dimensions related to feedback control concerns, a set of metrics which estimate quality attributes of resulting automated designs, and a search-based approach to find out a set of Pareto-optimal candidate architectures. The proposed approach has been fully implemented in a supporting tool and a case study with a self-Adaptive cloud computing environment has been undertaken. The results indicate that our approach effectively captures the most prominent degrees of freedom when designing self-Adaptive systems, helps to elicit effective subtle designs, and provides useful support for early analysis of trade-off decisions. © 2013 IEEE.

The variable acquisition of distributed sensor perception promises an effective utilization of these data across different applications. Multiple observations enable an increase in the quality of the system output. However, the dynamic composition disables all off-line optimization approaches, especially for sensor-application-scheduling. This paper addresses the need for an online adjustment of periodically working sensors and fusion/control applications. Based on a number of common goals - e.g., minimization of the variance of sensor data or the age of data sets - we deduce different metrics. For one aspect, the number of input counts, we propose a mathematical description and apply related optimizations. We use an an example analysis to illustrate further research goals.
