In this paper we present a novel framework supporting distributed network management using a self-organizing peer-to-peer over-lay network. The overlay consists of several distributed Network Agents which can perform distributed tests and distributed monitoring for fault and performance management. In that way, the concept is able to over-come disadvantages that come along with a central management unit, like lack of scalability and reliability. So far, little attention has been payed to the quality of service experienced by the end user. Our self-organizing management overlay provides a reliable and scalable basis for distributed tests that incorporate the end user. The use of a distributed, self-organizing software will also reduce capital and operational expenditures of the operator since fewer entities have to be installed and operated. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Some of the key issues in building services for large scale distributed systems, realizing Vishwa, a peer-to-peer (P2P) middleware architecture for developing grid applications are discussed. Researchers are producing large amounts of scientific data and believe that distributed computations on the data must be scheduled and available to a large number of scientists. It is suggested that the platform must scale up to a large number of nodes and data units in the system and must also be scalable geographically. A scalable, reconfigurable shared-object space over the two-layer architecture can be developed that incorporates mechanisms to maintain replicated data and must also provide a shared-object abstraction over a wide-area distributed system.

When transacting and interacting through open computer networks, traditional methods used in the physical world for establishing trust can no longer be used. Creating virtual network substitutes with which people, organisations and software agents can derive trust in other parties requires computerised analysis of the underlying trust networks. This article describes an approach to trust network analysis using subjective logic (TNA-SL), that consists of the three following elements. Firstly it uses a concise notation with which trust transitivity and parallel combination of trust paths can be expressed. Secondly it defines a method for simplifying complex trust networks so that they can be expressed in this concise form. Finally it allows trust measures to be expressed as beliefs, so that derived trust can be automatically and securely computed with subjective logic. We compare our approach with trust derivation algorithms that are based on normalisation such as PageRank and EigenTrust. We also provide a numerical example to illustrates how TNA-SL can be applied. © 2006 - IOS Press and the authors. All rights reserved.

The main focuses of the 2nd International Middleware Doctoral Symposium took place at Middleware 2005 are discussed. The symposium is a forum for an invited group of doctoral students and it provides an opportunity for them to obtain guidance from mentors and to meet with their peers. The event is aimed to give students constructive criticism before their thesis defense and foster discussions related to future career opportunities. The symposium attracted many high-quality submissions, ensuring a competitive selection process.

The evaluation framework for e-Government services proposed in this paper is designed to be a comprehensive guidance. The framework, which is intentionally used to ensure that government services meet the settled objective and citizens' needs, comprises of leading principles as stated in the Control Objectives for Information and related technology (COBIT), and the ISO 9000 quality standard, which are then merged into the technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The resulting framework is aimed at providing management with a direction to better achieve the quality goals of e-Government services and assure citizens about the quality of services provided by government organizations. © 2006 Suree, Gerald, Wichian, and Roland.

In this paper, we present a robot middleware technology named robot software communications architecture (RSCA) for its use in networked home service robots. The RSCA provides a standard operating environment for the robot applications together with a framework that expedites the development of such applications. The operating environment is comprised of a real-time operating system, a communication middleware, and a deployment middleware. Particularly, the deployment middleware supports the reconfiguration of component-based robot applications including installation, creation, start, stop, tear-down, and un-installation. In designing RSCA, we have adopted a middleware called SCA from the software defined radio domain and extend it since the original SCA lacks the real-time guarantees and appropriate event services. We have fully implemented RSCA and performed measurements to quantify its run-time performance. Our implementation clearly shows the viability of RSCA

Data replication is one of the key components in data grid architecture as it enhances data access and reliability and minimises the cost of data transmission. In this paper, we address the problem of reducing the overheads of the replication mechanisms that drive the data management components of a data grid. We propose an approach that extends the resource broker with policies that factor in user quality of service as well as service costs when replicating and transferring data. A realistic model of the data grid was created to simulate and explore the performance of the proposed policy. The policy displayed an effective means of improving the performance of the grid network traffic and is indicated by the improvement of speed and cost of transfers by brokers.

QoS-aware adaptive multipath routing protocol in ad hoc networks

Based on QoS framework-SWAN, A gateway-centric adaptive QoS-aware multipath routing protocol (GC-AQMR) is presented. It can ensure that each mobile node has a set of link-disjoint and loop-free routing to the gateway. Moreover, the intermediate node in the path also has the multipath information to the gateway. When the intermediate node experiences the congestion or link-break, it can switch adaptively to an alternate path with the additional path information. Simulations have shown that the SWAN system adopting GC-AQMR outperforms the SWAN with AODV protocol on all the performance metrics: Packet delivery ratio, average end-to-end delay/throughput and the fairness among real-time flows.

This paper addresses the need of semantic component in the grid environment to discover and describe the grid resources semantically. We propose semantic grid architecture by introducing a knowledge layer at the top of Gridbus broker architecture and thereby enabling broker to discover resources semantically. The semantic component in the knowledge layer enables semantic description of grid resources with the help of ontology template. The ontology template has been created using Protege-OWL editor for different types of computing resources in the grid environment. The Globus Toolkit's MDS is used to gather grid resource information and Protege-OWL libraries are used to dynamically create knowledge base of grid resources. Algernon inference engine is used for interacting with the knowledge base to discover suitable resources.
