The "tangible file system"/sup 1/ is a document management and access infrastructure for the ubiquitous computing era. It provides a transparent user interface which takes advantage of physical user actions for the purpose of directory management, data sharing and document location tracking. This is achieved by digitally augmenting both documents and document containers to detect the location of physical information and to trigger corresponding update actions in the electronic world. The system is built using the Datlet [9] architecture to allow any 'tool-objects' to be applied to 'data-objects', thereby enabling an even more natural user interaction based on affordances.

This paper surveys and investigates the strengths and weaknesses of a number of recent approaches to advanced workflow modelling. Rather than inventing just another workflow language, we briefly describe recent workflow languages, and we analyse them with respect to their support for advanced workflow topics. Object Coordination Nets, Workflow Graphs, WorkFlow Nets, and an approach based on Workflow Evolution are described as dedicated workflow modelling approaches. In addition, the Unified Modelling Language as the de facto standard in object-oriented modelling is also investigated. These approaches are discussed with respect to coverage of workflow perspectives and support for flexibility and analysis issues in workflow management, which are today seen as two major areas for advanced workflow support. Given the different goals and backgrounds of the approaches mentioned, it is not surprising that each approach has its specific strengths and weaknesses. We clearly identify these strengths and weaknesses, and we conclude with ideas for combining their best features. © 2003, IOS Press. All rights reserved.

Scaling network intrusion detection to high network speeds can be achieved using multiple sensors operating in parallel coupled with a suitable load balancing traffic splitter. This paper examines a splitter architecture that incorporates two methods for improving system performance: the first is the use of early filtering where a portion of the packets is processed on the splitter instead of the sensors. The second is the use of locality buffering, where the splitter reorders packets in a way that improves memory access locality on the sensors. Our experiments suggest that early filtering reduces the number of packets to be processed by 32%, giving a 8% increase in sensor performance, while locality buffers improve sensor performance by about 10%. Combined together, the two methods result in an overall improvement of 20% while the performance of the slowest sensor is improved by 14%.

The problems related to supporting multicast connections with quality of service (QoS) requirements are studied. We investigate the problem of optimal resource allocation in the context of performance dependent costs. In this context each network element can offer several QoS guarantees, each associated with a different cost. This is a natural extension to the commonly used bi-criteria model, where each link is associated with a single delay and a single cost. This framework is simple yet strong enough to model many practical interesting networking problems. The fundamental multicast resource allocation problem under this framework is how to optimally allocate QoS requirements on the links of the multicast tree. One needs to partition the end-to-end QoS requirement along the various paths in a tree. The goal is to satisfy the end-to-end QoS requirement with minimum cost. Previous studies under this framework considered single-source multicast connections, where the end-to-end QoS requirement is specified from the source to all other multicast group members. In this paper we extend these results to the more general, and considerably harder case of multicast sessions, where the end-to-end requirement hold for every path between any two multicast group members. Our aim is to provide rigorous solutions, with proven performance guarantees, by way of algorithmic analysis. The problem under investigation is NP hard for general cost functions, thus we first present a pseudopolynomial exact solution. From this solution we derive two efficient /spl epsi/-approximate solutions. One achieves optimal cost, but may violate the end-to-end delay requirement by a factor of (1 + /spl epsi/), and the other strictly obeys the bounds and achieves a cost within a factor of (1+/spl epsi/) of the optimum. Furthermore, we present improved results for discrete cost functions, and give a simple linear-time exact polynomial solution for a specific, and practically interesting, family of convex

This demo combines active DB technology in open, heterogeneous environments with the Web presence requirements of nomadic users. It illustrates these through profiling of users and Internet-enabled vehicles. A scenario is developed in which useful functionality is provided, such as instrument adjustments, maintenance and diagnostic information handling with the corresponding workflows, and convenience features, such as position-dependent language translation support and traffic information. The customization mechanism relies on an active functionality service.

The amount of information on the web is growing rapidly and search engines that rely on keyword matching usually return too many fow quality matches. To improve search results, a challenging task for search engines is how to effectively calculate a relevane ranking for each web page. This paper discusses in what order a search engine should return the URLs it has produced in response to a user's query so as to show more relevant pages first. Emphasis is given on the ranking functions a-dopted by WebGather that take link structure and user popularity factors into account. Bxperimental results are also presented to evaluate the proposed strategy.

Computational Grids are a promising platform for executing large-scale resource intensive applications. However, resource management and scheduling in the Grid environment is a complex undertaking as resources are (geographically) distributed, heterogeneous in nature, owned by different individuals or organizations with their own policies, have different access and cost models, and have dynamically varying loads and availability. This introduces a number of challenging issues such as site autonomy, heterogeneous interaction, policy extensibility, resource allocation or co-allocation, online control, scalability, transparency, resource brokering, and "computational economy". A number of Grid systems (such as Globus and Legion) have addressed many of these issues with exception of a computational economy. We argue that a computational economy is required in order to create a real world scalable Grid because it provides a mechanism for regulating the Grid resources demand and supply. It offers incentive for resource owners to be part of the Grid and encourages consumers to optimally utilize resources and balance timeframe and access costs. We propose a 'computational economy framework' that builds on the existing Grid middleware systems and offers an infrastructure for resource management and trading in the Grid environment. We discuss the usage economic models for resource trading in the Nimrod/G resource broker and present deadline and cost-based scheduling experimental results on the Grid. © 2001 IEEE.

Workflow technology is currently being deployed in quite diverse domains. However, the element of change is present in some degree and form in almost all domains. A workflow implementation that does not support the process of change will not benefit the organization in the long run. Change can be manifested in different forms in workflow processes. In this paper, we first present a categorization of workflow change characteristics and divide workflow processes into dynamic, adaptive and flexible processes. We define flexibility as the ability of the workflow process to execute on the basis of a loosely, or partially specified model, where the full specification of the model is made at runtime, and may be unique to each instance. To provide a modeling framework that offers true flexibility, we need to consider the factors, which influence the paths of (unique) instances together with the process definition. We advocate an approach that aims at making the process of change part of the workflow process itself. We introduce the notion of an open instance that consists of a core process and several pockets of flexibility, and present a framework based on this notion, which makes use of special build activities that provide the functionality to integrate the process of defining a change, into the open workflow instance. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

Computational intelligence techniques have been successfully used for solving control problems in p ache t-switching network architectures. The introduction of active networking adds a high degree of flexibility in customizing the network infrastructure and introducing new functionality. Therefore, there is a clear need for investigating both the applicability of computational intelligence techniques in this new networking environment, as well as the provisions of active networking technology that computational intelligence techniques can exploit for improved operation. We report on the characteristics of these technologies, their synergy and on outline recent efforts in the design of a computational intelligence toolkit and its application to routing on a novel active networking environment. © 2001 ACM.

The nature of an open distributed environment provides a resoundingly diverse yet potentially chaotic environment for users. A great deal of research has focused on the management of resources in such an environment and policy-based management has emerged as one such promising solution. In order to support large evolving enterprises, we are currently developing a policy model that will be scalable and able to cope with the extraordinarily high rate of change inherent in such environments. To do this, we have developed a number of novel concepts including: enterprise domain, policy space and policy authority which are unique and central to our approach. The overall objective of producing this model is to support dynamic roles, dynamic policies and the subsequent dynamic, conflict analysis. Prevailing policy-based management models largely promote the static definition and analysis of policy. We argue that although these models are suitable for homogenous, largely static environments, they are too rigid to adequately represent large, heterogeneous, evolving enterprise as the fluidity and complexity of interactions occurring in such environments are genuinely difficult and often impossible to pre-empt at the time of policy specification and role assignment.
