Matrix factorization (MF) can extract the low-rank features and integrate the information of the data manifold distribution from high-dimensional data, which can consider the nonlinear neighbourhood information. Thus, MF has drawn wide attention for low-rank analysis of sparse big data, e.g., Collaborative Filtering (CF) Recommender systems, Social Networks, and Quality of Service. However, the following two problems exist: 1) huge computational overhead for the construction of the Graph Similarity Matrix (GSM), and 2) huge memory overhead for the intermediate GSM. Therefore, GSM-based MF, e.g., kernel MF, graph regularized MF, etc., cannot be directly applied to the low-rank analysis of sparse big data on cloud and edge platforms. To solve this intractable problem for sparse big data analysis, we propose Locality Sensitive Hashing (LSH) aggregated MF (LSH-MF), which can solve the following problems: 1) The proposed probabilistic projection strategy of LSH-MF can avoid the construction of the GSM. Furthermore, LSH-MF can satisfy the requirement for the accurate projection of sparse big data. 2) To run LSH-MF for fine-grained parallelization and online learning on GPUs, we also propose CULSH-MF, which works on CUDA parallelization. Experimental results show that CULSH-MF can not only reduce the computational time and memory overhead but also obtain higher accuracy. ChatGPT, an AI-based chatbot, was released to provide coherent and useful replies based on analysis of large volumes of data. In this article, leading scientists, researchers and engineers discuss the transformative effects of ChatGPT on modern education. This research seeks to improve our knowledge of ChatGPT capabilities and its use in the education sector, identifying potential concerns and challenges. Our preliminary evaluation concludes that ChatGPT performed differently in each subject area including finance, coding and maths. While ChatGPT has the ability to help educators by creating instructional content, offering suggestions and acting as an online educator to learners by answering questions and promoting group work, there are clear drawbacks in its use, such as the possibility of producing inaccurate or false data and circumventing duplicate content (plagiarism) detectors where originality is essential. The often reported "hallucinations" within Generative AI in general, and also relevant for ChatGPT, can render its use of limited benefit where accuracy is essential. What ChatGPT lacks is a stochastic measure to help provide sincere and sensitive communication with its users. Academic regulations and evaluation practices used in educational institutions need to be updated, should ChatGPT be used as a tool in education. To address the transformative effects of ChatGPT on the learning environment, educating teachers and students alike about its capabilities and limitations will be crucial. © 2023, CC0.

A vehicular network underpinned by the 3-tier vehicle-edge-cloud infrastructure enables an efficient and safer travel experience. The compute-intensive vehicular applications are often offloaded to the edge and/or cloud servers to enhance the applications' Quality of Services (QoS). The underlying edge-cloud servers consume a high among of energy. Consequently, it becomes crucial to optimizing energy consumption in the offloading process. Current energy-efficient offloading strategies in 2-tier vehicle-edge infrastructure, do not account for cloud computing energy consumption. In this paper, we address this void by proposing a machine learning-based energy-aware offloading algorithm, which optimizes the energy of the edge-cloud computing platform. The offloading strategy is enabled by the Support Vector Machine (SVM) regression model machine learning algorithm used for the edge-cloud power prediction. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is a promising approach in energy savings. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

Diabetes is one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide. Health professionals are aiming for machine learning models to support the prognosis of diabetes for better healthcare and to put in place an effective prevention plan. In this paper, we conduct a comparative analysis of the most used machine learning models in the literature to predict the prevalence of diabetes mellitus type 2. We evaluate the models in terms of accuracy, F-measure and execution time with and without feature selection using a real-life diabetes dataset. The detailed analysis is in the paper. © 2020 IEEE.

Climate change is a challenge of global relevance that requires in-depth understanding and immediate response. Urban CO 2 emissions are one of the main causes of climate change, and their estimation is crucial for planning actions aimed at creating more sustainable cities. Currently, models for estimating CO 2 emissions mainly focus on traffic patterns, energy consumption, or a limited set of socio-economic factors, often overlooking the increasing role of urban services in today’s cities. Moreover, these data are rarely accessible, which limits their usefulness for policy design. In the present paper, a general CO 2 emission estimation approach, based on a large range of often accessible open data as predictors, is presented. Such open data are related to human activity regarding services and (socio-economic) conditions arising in a given (urban) area. The proposed model focuses on fine-scale prediction to better understand the dynamics of emissions via machine learning approaches, while taking into account an innovative study based on open data sources including city services. The resulting best models have been based on XgBoost and GCN (graph convolutional network). The outcomes provided better precision (MAPE in the order of 8%) with respect to the state-of-the-art solutions. The goal has been to understand how specific predictors can contribute to or mitigate CO 2 emissions in the observed area. To this end, the impact of several features has been analyzed in order to identify the related key factors influencing emissions. A formal study has been conducted to perform feature relevance analysis by using eXplainable AI (XAI) approach. The proposed model is useful to define targeted policies reducing the pollutant impact of cities, promote a more ecologically sustainable urban lifestyle and improve sustainable urban planning. With the rapid development of the satellite industry, the information transmission network based on communication satellites has gradually become a major and important part of the future satellite ground integration network. However, the low transmission efficiency of the satellite data relay back mission has become a problem that is currently constraining the construction of the system and needs to be solved urgently. Effectively planning the task of satellite ground networking by reasonably scheduling resources is crucial for the efficient transmission of task data. In this paper, we hope to provide a task execution scheme that maximizes the profit of the networking task for satellite ground network planning considering feeding mode (SGNPFM). To solve the SGNPFM problem, a mixed-integer planning model with the objective of maximizing the gain of the link-building task is constructed, which considers various constraints of the satellite in the feed-switching mode. Based on the problem characteristics, we propose a distance similarity-based genetic optimization algorithm (DSGA), which considers the state characteristics between the tasks and introduces a weighted Euclidean distance method to determine the similarity between the tasks. To obtain more high-quality solutions, different similarity evaluation methods are designed to assist the algorithm in intelligently screening individuals. The DSGAalso uses an adaptive crossover strategy based on similarity mechanism, which guides the algorithm to achieve efficient population search. In addition, a task scheduling algorithm considering the feed-switching mode is designed for decoding the algorithm to generate a highquality scheme. The results of simulation experiments show that the DSGA can effectively solve the SGNPFM problem. Access-Control Lists (ACLs) (a.k.a. "friend lists") are one of the most important privacy features of Online Social Networks (OSNs) as they allow users to restrict the audience of their publications. Nevertheless, creating and maintaining custom ACLs can introduce a high cognitive burden on average OSNs users since it normally requires assessing the trustworthiness of a large number of contacts. In principle, community detection algorithms can be leveraged to support the generation of ACLs by mapping a set of examples (i.e. contacts labelled as "untrusted") to the emerging communities inside the user’s ego-network. However, unlike users’ access-control preferences, traditional community-detection algorithms do not take the homophily characteristics of such communities into account (i.e. attributes shared among members). Consequently, this strategy may lead to inaccurate ACL configurations and privacy breaches under certain homophily scenarios. This work investigates the use of community-detection algorithms for the automatic generation of ACLs in OSNs. Particularly, it analyses the performance of the aforementioned approach under different homophily conditions through a simulation model. Furthermore, since private information may reach the scope of untrusted recipients through the re-sharing affordances of OSNs, information diffusion processes are also modelled and taken explicitly into account. Altogether, the removal of gatekeeper nodes is further explored as a strategy to counteract unwanted data dissemination. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The article presents the issue of scale deposits in sanitary installations. Scale contributes to improper operation of sanitary devices and leads to their degradation. Scale build-up in pipes and measuring elements results in higher water consumption due to inaccurate estimation of this resource consumption. The consequence is that devices based on process automation do not work properly due to disturbances in the actual water flow. The formation of deposits also leads to economic and ecological losses, as sanitary installations elements have to be replaced, which affects the increased use of raw materials and the generation of waste. This is not in line with current trends and global objectives related to circular economy. Scale also results in increased energy consumption and reduced energy efficiency. This is due to the resistance of the flows and the increased work of the pumps. Scale has insulating properties, which results in less efficient heat transfer. In this stady, a mathematical model was developed to detect the formation of scale deposits in sanitary installations. On this basis, it is possible to control the quality status of sanitary installation components. In this way, by taking appropriate action at an early stage of the formation of deposits, it can extend the life of the installation. Having information on scale deposits, it will help avoid wasting water and lead to more accurate measurement of water flows. This is important for the proper operation of devices such as heat pumps, where their operation is automated and requires precise measurements of the energy processes taking place. Scale is a significant problem for households, and also for factories or public institutions that are exposed to hard water environments. © 2021 International Multidisciplinary Scientific Geoconference. The Bavarian higher education environment is aiming to renew its IT strategy. The overall objective is to find an organisational solution which allows both local independence and collaborative solutions in those areas which are either commodities or which are too complex or costly to be solved several times in parallel. All Bavarian CIOs are engaged in the development of a model which respects local governance to be included into the overarching IT strategy of Bavaria, potentially Germany and Europe. As a common framework, COBIT was chosen to structure the process and guarantee completeness. The application of COBIT was started by the agreement to a common model. Further, the description of the respective responsibilities and competencies for all stakeholders was defined. We share this current state of the discussion with the broader community of higher education to promote further discussions about methods and objectives. © 2020 Gesellschaft fur Informatik (GI).
