In this paper, the problem of tonal disturbance rejection via direct adaptive control is considered. The key problem feature is compared with the usual adaptive tracking problem. Traditional model reference and pole placement approaches are attempted, and their advantages and drawbacks are given. We then propose an adaptive solution based on a new parameterization scheme which is unique to the given problem. Simulation studies are used to compare these different schemes. © 1998 AACC.

Many practical applications of control system design based on input-output measurements permit the repeated application of a system identification procedure operating on closed loop data together with successive refinement of the designed controller. Recently several iterative schemes for mutually enhanced plant identification and robust control design have been proposed [l]-[3]. In this paper we shall analyze the methodology of [1] from the viewpoint of closed loop signal conditioning and investigate the effect of the noise modelling error and plant modelling error on the closed loop performance.

A data-driven model-free control design method has been proposed in Hjalmarsson et al. (1994). It is based on the minimization of a control criterion with respect to the controller parameters using an iterative gradient technique. In this paper, we extend this method to the case where both the plant and the controller can be nonlinear. It is shown that an estimate of the gradient can be constructed using only signal based information. It is also shown that by using open loop identification techniques, one can obtain a good approximation of the gradient of the control criterion while performing fewer experiments on the actual system.

We derive an upper bound on the bit error probability in breadth first limited search detection over a finite interference channel, which includes finite length ISI channels and multiuser channels as two special cases. We show that the bit error probability of the breadth first algorithm is bounded from above by the sum of three terms: the Forney (1972) upper bound on the error probability in the Viterbi algorithm (VA) detection and two upper bounds on the two types of the error probability caused by the correct path loss event. We also show that the error propagation (in terms of the mean recovery step number) is finite for all finite interference channels. The procedures can be applied to time variant interference channels in which the multiuser interference (MUI) channel is a special case. The results can also be used to construct convolutional codes for the M-algorithm.

This paper considers a restricted complexity LQG controller design using an existing iterative identification and control design scheme applied to a disturbance rejection problem. The cornerstone of this iterative method is a frequency weighting derived from experimental closed loop input/output signals. This frequency weighting characterises mismatch between two closed loop systems, one in which the controller design is conducted and the other in which the controller is implemented. It is shown that the frequency weighting is mechanism which translates the closed loop mismatch into better control performance when the enhanced LQG controller acts on the true plant. The results obtained provide an intuitive link between the iterative design method and an existing closed loop controller reduction technique.

Milling of sugar cane is concerned with the extraction of sugar bearing juice by crushing in a cascaded series of mills. The problem dealt with in this paper is the design and testing of a mill control system to provide good extraction in spite of large variations in the milling properties of the cane. The control strategy adopted is based on a Linear Quadratic Gaussian with Loop Transfer Recovery (LQG/LTR) method toreject the disturbances due to the cane changes and modified to accommodate plant constraints. By judicious selection of the disturbance model, a robust linear control strategy is developed in which the variety changes are followed using a state estimator. This is a strategy which is widely applicable in place of fully adaptive approaches. The ensuing controller was tested on the operating mill with some qualified success. A method of jointly estimating the parameters of a number of superimposed convolutional coded communication signals incident on an antenna array and demodulating these signals is presented. The method would allow simpler arrays to be designed due to the threshold extension obtained by this method. It also has the potential to increase the throughput of current multiple access channel systems, for example, satellite communications and digital mobile cellular phones, by using an antenna array. The concept is based on the use of sequence estimation combined jointly with parameter estimation in array processing problems. In the simulations it is shown that a significant improvement in the accuracy of the demodulated signals and in the estimation of the signals angle of arrivals is obtained compared to a deterministic maximum likelihood estimation method.

System Identification Methods Applied to a Helicopter Vibration Control Problem

In this paper we report on a system identification procedure that was performed as part of a helicopter vibration control application. We show how a prion knowledge plays a key role in identifying a suitable model. The experiment design is given a great deal of consideration and includes a number of novel signal processing steps. The resulting model has a very low order and this is due to the fact that its choice is ultimately dictated by its use in control design. This low order model would likely be judged as unacceptable when based on conventional identification performance criteria but we demonstrate that it is a good model for this application since it yields an effective low complexity controller.

A discrete-time partially observed LQG control problem, with exponential quadratic running cost is considered. The dynamics are linear though the control may enter nonlinearly. Explicit solutions for a forward Zakai equation and a backward adjoint equation are derived. This enables the problem to be expressed in terms of observable, finite dimensional dynamics. A separation principle is obtained.
