Fractional derivative analysis of axial wave propagation studies in carbon nanorods with elastic medium support using nonlocal strain gradient theory

The present study provides new insights into the analysis of axial wave propagation in carbon nanorods using fractional derivative analysis and nonlocal strain gradient theory. The conventional classical nonlocal strain theory employs a two-length scale to capture nonlocal phenomena, whereas the proposed fractional derivative approach introduces two additional length scales. This new approach offers a more comprehensive understanding of the axial wave propagation phenomena in carbon nanorods with four-length scales. The study includes investigating the dispersion curve, phase speed, and group speed of wave propagation. For the first time, the effect of the newly proposed two additional length scales shows interesting phenomena in axial wave studies of carbon nanorods besides the two existing length scales in nonlocal strain gradient theory. Furthermore, the present axial wave propagation investigation incorporates the effect of elastic medium support modeled with nonlocal strain gradient theory by including the Caputo fractional derivative approach. © 2024, CC BY.

An Assessment of Potential Economic Gain from Weather Forecast Based Irrigation Scheduling for Marginal Farmers in Karnataka, Southern State in India

This study is aimed to assess the usefulness of weather forecasts for irrigation scheduling in crops to economize water use. The short-term gains for the farmers come from reducing costs of irrigation with the help of advisory for when not to irrigate because rain is predicted (risk-free because the wrong forecast only delays irrigation within tolerance). Here, a quantitative assessment of saving (indirect income) if irrigation is avoided as rain is imminent (as per forecast), using a five-year archived forecast data over Karnataka state at hobli (a cluster of small villages) level is presented. Estimates showed that the economic benefits to the farmers from such advisories were significant. The potential gain in annual income from such forecast-based irrigation scheduling was of the order of 10% - 15%. Our analysis also indicated that the use of advisory by a small percentage of more than 10 million marginal farmers (landholding < 3 acres) in Karnataka could lead to huge cumulative savings of the order of many crores.

The nanofluid, composed of kerosene and tantalum and nickel nanoparticles, is propagating through a porous, elastic surface. The kerosene base fluid is incompressible and electrically conducting. The energy equation for this nanofluid is formulated taking into account the viscous dissipation. The mathematical modeling is performed with the help of a similarity transformation. The developed governing equations are numerically solved using the shooting technique and the Matlab software. The physical behavior of different parameters in the model is discussed through tabular and graphical forms. The present results are also compared to past results. The results indicate that the flow propagates faster for higher values of Darcy number and Tantalum nanoparticles and that the magnetic field opposes the fluid motion. Also that the thermal boundary layer decreases in the presence of Tantalum and Nickel nanoparticles.

Throughout its history, Operational Research has evolved to include a variety of methods, models and algorithms that have been applied to a diverse and wide range of contexts. This encyclopedic article consists of two main sections: methods and applications. The first aims to summarise the up-to-date knowledge and provide an overview of the state-of-the-art methods and key developments in the various subdomains of the field. The second offers a wide-ranging list of areas where Operational Research has been applied. The article is meant to be read in a nonlinear fashion. It should be used as a point of reference or first-port-of-call for a diverse pool of readers: academics, researchers, students, and practitioners. The entries within the methods and applications sections are presented in alphabetical order. The authors dedicate this paper to the 2023 Turkey/Syria earthquake victims. We sincerely hope that advances in OR will play a role towards minimising the pain and suffering caused by this and future catastrophes. © 2023, CC BY.

Drag-force regimes in granular impact

We study the penetration dynamics of a projectile incident normally on a substrate comprising of smaller granular particles in three-dimensions using the discrete element method. Scaling of the penetration depth is consistent with experimental observations for small velocity impacts. Our studies are consistent with the observation that the normal or drag force experienced by the penetrating grain obeys the generalized Poncelet law, which has been extensively invoked in understanding the drag force in the recent experimental data. We find that the normal force experienced by the projectile consists of position and kinetic-energy-dependent pieces. Three different penetration regimes are identified in our studies for low-impact velocities. The first two regimes are observed immediately after the impact and in the early penetration stage, respectively, during which the drag force is seen to depend on the kinetic energy. The depth dependence of the drag force becomes significant in the third regime when the projectile is moving slowly and is partially immersed in the substrate. These regimes relate to the different configurations of the bed: the initial loose surface packed state, fluidized bed below the region of impact, and the state after the crater formation commences.

There are formalisms available in the literature for determining the force and torque on a particle moving in a fluid at zero and low Reynolds numbers. The formalism for determining the force and torque on a particle in a fluid at arbitrary Reynolds numbers has only recently been developed, Magnaudet [1]. This paper focuses on developing a formalism for the special case of a sphere moving in a quiescent fluid at arbitrary Reynolds numbers using the formalism of Magnaudet. © (2013) Trans tech publications, Switzerland.

The problem regarding the reflection of plane waves in a transversely isotropic dissipative medium is considered, in which we are studying about the reflection of incidence waves in initially stressed dissipative half space. After solving the governing equations, we find the two complex quasi-P (qP) and quasi-SV (qSV) waves. The occurrence of reflected waves is studied to calculate the reflection coefficient and the energy partition of incidence wave at the plane boundary of the dissipative medium. Numerical example is considered for the reflection coefficient and the partition of incident energy, in which we study about the effect of rotation, initial stresses and magnetic field.

Denial-of-Service attacks (DoS) have become a widespread problem on the Internet. These attacks are easy to execute. Low rate attacks are relatively new variants of DoS attacks. Low rate DoS attacks are difficult to detect since attacker sends attack stream with low volume and the countermeasures used to handle the high rate DoS attacks are not suitable for these types of attacks. RTS/CTS attack is one type of Low rate DoS attack. In this paper, we analyze RTS/CTS attack which exploits the medium reservation mechanism of 802.11 networks through duration field. We propose variants of RTS/CTS attacks in wireless networks. We simulate the attacks behaviour in ns2 simulation environment to demonstrate the attack feasibility as well as potential negative impact of these attacks on 802.11 based networks. We have created an application that has the capability to create test bed environment for the attacks, perform RTS/CTS attacks and generate suitable graphs to analyze the attack's behaviour. We also briefly discuss possible ways of detecting and mitigating such Low rate DoS attacks in wireless networks.
