Purpose of Review: We survey operational models of water-distribution systems. Although such modeling is important in its own right, our focus is motivated by the growing desire to examine and manage the nexus between water-distribution and electricity systems. As such, our survey discusses computational challenges in modeling water-distribution systems, co-ordination dynamics between water-distribution and electricity systems, and gaps in the literature. Recent Findings: Modeling water-distribution systems is made difficult by their highly non-linear and non-convex physical properties. Co-ordinating water-distribution and electricity systems, especially with the growing supply and demand uncertainties of the latter, requires fast optimization techniques for real-time system management. Although many works suggest means of co-ordinating the two systems, practical applications are limited, due to the systems having separate and autonomous management and ownership. Nonetheless, recent works are navigating this challenge, by seeking methods to foster improved co-ordination of the two systems while respecting their autonomy. Additionally, with the backdrop of increased security threats, there is a growing need to bolster infrastructure protection, which is complicated by the intertwined nature of the two systems. Summary: By providing a steady supply of potable water to satisfy residential, commercial, agricultural, and industrial demands, water-distribution systems are pivotal components of modern society and infrastructure. The extant literature presents many models and optimization strategies that are tailored for operating water-distribution systems. Yet, there remain unexplored problems, particularly related to simplifying model computation, capturing the flexibility of water-distribution systems, and capturing interdependencies between water-distribution and other systems and infrastructures. This paper considers novel ethical issues pertaining to near-future artificial intelligence (AI) systems that seek to support, maintain, or enhance the capabilities of older adults as they age and experience cognitive decline. In particular, we focus on smart assistants (SAs) that would seek to provide proactive assistance and mediate social interactions between users and other members of their social or support networks. Such systems would potentially have significant utility for users and their caregivers if they could reduce the cognitive load for tasks that help older adults maintain their autonomy and independence. However, proactively supporting even simple tasks, such as providing the user with a summary of a meeting or a conversation, would require a future SA to engage with ethical aspects of human interactions which computational systems currently have difficulty identifying, tracking, and navigating. If SAs fail to perceive ethically relevant aspects of social interactions, the resulting deficit in moral discernment would threaten important aspects of user autonomy and well-being. After describing the dynamic that generates these ethical challenges, we note how simple strategies for prompting user oversight of such systems might also undermine their utility. We conclude by considering how near-future SAs could exacerbate current worries about privacy, commodification of users, trust calibration and injustice. © 2020 IEEE.

We examine carbon-policy design for a power system with energy storage as well as renewable and fossil-fuelled generation. A central-planning solution internalises the environmental externality of CO2 emissions and curbs fossil-fuelled generation in proportion to the marginal cost of damage. By contrast, a decentralised solution leads to a bi-level setup-an upper-level welfare-maximising policymaker sets a CO2 tax to impose upon lower-level profit-maximising generators. For completely efficient storage, an optimal CO2 tax in this bi-level setting renders the first-best outcome. However, with inefficient storage, an infinitesimal increase in the CO2 tax induces prices to increase at the same rate. As a result, storage shifts energy to the off-peak period to offset the loss in the value of stored energy. Hence, relative to the marginal cost of damage from emissions under central planning, the optimal CO2 tax for the decentralised case is lower and may be nonmonotonic in energy storage's inefficiency. © 2025 IEEE computer Society. This paper studies the problem of designing work-place electric vehicle (EV) charging tariffs (i.e., fee schedules) while considering their impact to the transportation-electricity nexus. In particular, we consider the morning commute problem where a collection of commuters who drive EV to work must go through a common traffic bottleneck. Individual commuters determine when to leave for work and whether to charge their EV at work by optimizing a payoff function accounting for their generalized travel cost and payoff from charging. As an arrival time dependent charging tariff can directly impact the commuter decisions at the user equilibrium, we tackle the problem of designing tariffs that optimize (a) only the transportation component of the social cost, (b) only the electricity component of the social cost, and (c) the total social cost for the coupled transportation and electricity system. Tariffs incentivizing user equilibria that achieve the same performance as centralized social cost minimization are derived for the first two settings. For the last setting, we establish a tight condition under which it is possible to decentralize social optimal decisions via tariffs, and design optimal and suboptimal tariffs when the condition holds and fails, respectively.

We develop a clearance and settlement model for Peer-to-Peer (P2P) energy trading in low-voltage networks. The model enables direct transactions between parties within an open and distributed system and integrates unused capacity while respecting network constraints. We evaluate the model through simulations of different scenarios (normal operating conditions and extreme conditions) for 24-hour time blocks. Our simulations highlight the benefits of our model in a decentralized energy system, notably its ability to deal with high-trade volumes.

Extended reality (XR) is bridging the gap between virtual and real-world interactions enabling users to interact in realistic virtual worlds, removing physical obstacles, and establishing shared areas that promote greater comprehension and teamwork. The growing demand for high-frequency 5G communication systems supporting these new applications motivates the need of compact and efficient antennas capable of operating at millimeter-wave frequency bands. This work explores how the use of photonic crystal (PhC) leverages the properties of a multi-band antenna operating within the 27.0 GHz and 41.49 GHz resonant bands. The High-Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) software is utilized in this paper to outline a comprehensive design and modeling approach for the proposed microstrip patch *** design process involves optimizing the geometry and periodicity of the PhC structure to obtain resonant modes at the desired frequency bands by exploiting its bandgap properties, whilst enabling high quality resonances within the targeted frequency bands. The electromagnetic simulations and numerical analysis results demonstrate that the designed multi-band PhC-based antenna achieves a gain of 9.57 dBi. The resonant modes exhibit high quality factors, resulting in improved radiation efficiency. The proposed PhC-based antenna compact size, high gain, and multiple resonant bands make it suitable for a wide range of applications, including next-generation wireless communication systems supporting XR, radar systems, or satellite communications in the upper frequency bands.

Quantifying the impact of inverter-based distributed generation (DG) sources on power-flow distribution system cases is arduous. Existing distribution system tools predominately model distributed generation sources as either negative PQ loads or as a PV generator and then employed a PV-PQ switching algorithm to mimic Volt/VAR support. These models neglect the unique characteristics of inverter-based distributed generation sources, have scalability and convergence issues, and are ill-suited for increasing solar penetration scenarios. This work proposes an inverter-based DG model accounting for the inverter's topology, sensing position, and control strategies. The model extends recently introduced analytical positive sequence generator models for three-phase studies. The use of circuit-simulation based heuristics help achieve robust convergence. Simulation of the PG&E prototypical feeders using a prototype solver demonstrate the model's accuracy and efficacy. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

Graph Structure Learning (GSL) has recently garnered considerable attention due to its ability to optimize both the parameters of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) and the computation graph structure simultaneously. Despite the proliferation of GSL methods developed in recent years, there is no standard experimental setting or fair comparison for performance evaluation, which creates a great obstacle to understanding the progress in this field. To fill this gap, we systematically analyze the performance of GSL in different scenarios and develop a comprehensive Graph Structure Learning Benchmark (GSLB) curated from 20 diverse graph datasets and 16 distinct GSL algorithms. Specifically, GSLB systematically investigates the characteristics of GSL in terms of three dimensions: effectiveness, robustness, and complexity. We comprehensively evaluate state-of-the-art GSL algorithms in node- and graph-level tasks, and analyze their performance in robust learning and model complexity. Further, to facilitate reproducible research, we have developed an easy-to-use library for training, evaluating, and visualizing different GSL methods. Empirical results of our extensive experiments demonstrate the ability of GSL and reveal its potential benefits on various downstream tasks, offering insights and opportunities for future research. public health practitioners and policy makers grapple with the challenge of devising effective message-based interventions for debunking public health misinformation in cyber communities. Framing and personalization of the message is one of the key features for devising a persuasive messaging strategy. For an effective health communication, it is imperative to focus on preference-based framing where the preferences of the target sub-community are taken into consideration. To achieve that, it is important to understand and hence characterize the target sub-communities in terms of their social interactions. In the context of health-related misinformation, vaccination remains to be the most prevalent topic of discord. Hence, in this paper, we conduct a sociolinguistic analysis of the two competing vaccination communities on Twitter: pro-vaxxers or individuals who believe in the effectiveness of vaccinations, and anti-vaxxers or individuals who are opposed to vaccinations. Our data analysis show significant linguistic variation between the two communities in terms of their usage of linguistic intensifiers, pronouns, and uncertainty words. Our network-level analysis show significant differences between the two communities in terms of their network density, echo-chamberness, and the EI index. We hypothesize that these sociolinguistic differences can be used as proxies to characterize and understand these communities to devise better message interventions. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
