Medical image registration is vital for disease diagnosis and treatment with its ability to merge diverse information of images, which may be captured under different times, angles, or modalities. Although several surveys have reviewed the development of medical image registration, these surveys have not systematically summarized methodologies of existing medical image registration methods. To this end, we provide a comprehensive review of these methods from traditional and deep learning-based directions, aiming to help audiences understand the development of medical image registration quickly. In particular, we review recent advances in retinal image registration at the end of each section, which has not attracted much attention. Additionally, we also discuss the current challenges of retinal image registration and provide insights and prospects for future research. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.

Efficient Low-Resolution Face Recognition via Bridge Distillation

Face recognition in the wild is now advancing towards light-weight models, fast inference speed and resolution-adapted capability. In this paper, we propose a bridge distillation approach to turn a complex face model pretrained on private high-resolution faces into a light-weight one for low-resolution face recognition. In our approach, such a cross-dataset resolution-adapted knowledge transfer problem is solved via two-step distillation. In the first step, we conduct cross-dataset distillation to transfer the prior knowledge from private high-resolution faces to public high-resolution faces and generate compact and discriminative features. In the second step, the resolution-adapted distillation is conducted to further transfer the prior knowledge to synthetic low-resolution faces via multi-task learning. By learning low-resolution face representations and mimicking the adapted high-resolution knowledge, a light-weight student model can be constructed with high efficiency and promising accuracy in recognizing low-resolution faces. Experimental results show that the student model performs impressively in recognizing low-resolution faces with only 0.21M parameters and 0.057MB memory. Meanwhile, its speed reaches up to 14,705, 934 and 763 faces per second on GPU, CPU and mobile phone, respectively. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Local feature detection and description play an important role in many computer vision tasks, which are designed to detect and describe keypoints in any scene and any downstream task. Data-driven local feature learning methods need to rely on pixel-level correspondence for training. However, a vast number of existing approaches ignored the semantic information on which humans rely to describe image pixels. In addition, it is not feasible to enhance generic scene keypoints detection and description simply by using traditional common semantic segmentation models because they can only recognize a limited number of coarse-grained object classes. In this paper, we propose SAMFeat to introduce SAM (segment anything model), a foundation model trained on 11 million images, as a teacher to guide local feature learning. SAMFeat learns additional semantic information brought by SAM and thus is inspired by higher performance even with limited training samples. To do so, first, we construct an auxiliary task of Attention-weighted Semantic Relation Distillation (ASRD), which adaptively distillates feature relations with category-agnostic semantic information learned by the SAM encoder into a local feature learning network, to improve local feature description using semantic discrimination. Second, we develop a technique called Weakly Supervised Contrastive Learning Based on Semantic Grouping (WSC), which utilizes semantic groupings derived from SAM as weakly supervised signals, to optimize the metric space of local descriptors. Third, we design an Edge Attention Guidance (EAG) to further improve the accuracy of local feature detection and description by prompting the network to pay more attention to the edge region guided by SAM. SAMFeat’s performance on various tasks such as image matching on HPatches, and long-term visual localization on Aachen Day-Night showcases its superiority over previous local features. Indoor positioning is a thriving research area, which is slowly gaining market momentum. Its applications are mostly customized, ad hoc installations;ubiquitous applications analogous to Global Navigation Satellite System for outdoors are not available because of the lack of generic platforms, widely accepted standards and interoperability protocols. In this context, the indoor positioning and indoor navigation (IPIN) competition is the only long-term, technically sound initiative to monitor the state of the art of real systems by measuring their performance in a realistic environment. Most competing systems are pedestrian-oriented and based on the use of smartphones, but several competing tracks were set up, enabling comparison of an array of technologies. The two IPIN competitions described here include only off-site tracks. In contrast with on-site tracks where competitors bring their systems on-site - which were impossible to organize during 2021 and 2022 - in off-site tracks competitors download prerecorded data from multiple sensors and process them using the EvaalAPI, a real-time, web-based emulation interface. As usual with IPIN competitions, tracks were compliant with the EvAAL framework, ensuring consistency of the measurement procedure and reliability of results. The main contribution of this work is to show a compilation of possible indoor positioning scenarios and different indoor positioning solutions to the same problem. © 2023 CCBY.

Voice conversion (VC) systems can transform audio to mimic another speaker’s voice, thereby attacking speaker verification (SV) systems. However, ongoing studies on source speaker verification (SSV) are hindered by limited data availability and methodological constraints. This paper presents the Source Speaker Tracking Challenge (SSTC) on STL 2024, which aims to fill the gap in the database and benchmark for the SSV task. In this study, we generate a large-scale converted speech database with 16 common VC methods and train a batch of baseline systems based on the MFA-Conformer architecture. In addition, we introduced a related task called conversion method recognition, with the aim of assisting the SSV task. We expect SSTC to be a platform for advancing the development of the SSV task and provide further insights into the performance and limitations of current SV systems against VC attacks. Cloud computing enables remote execution of users' tasks. The pervasive adoption of cloud computing in smart cities' services and applications requires timely execution of tasks adhering to Quality of Services (QoS). However, the increasing use of computing servers exacerbates the issues of high energy consumption, operating costs, and environmental pollution. Maximizing the performance and minimizing the energy in the cloud data center is challenging. In this paper, we propose a performance and energy optimization bi-objective algorithm to trade off the contradicting performance and energy objectives. An evolutionary algorithm-based multi-objective optimization is for the first time proposed using system performance counters. The performance of the proposed model is evaluated using a realistic cloud dataset in a cloud computing environment. Our experimental results achieve higher performance and lower energy consumption compared to a state-of-the-art algorithm. © 2021 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Smart connected healthcare is an emerging technology in the context of smart cities. The connected network aims to provide efficient and effective remote patient care. In such scenarios, edge and clouds come into the picture to offload computation from sensors and mobile devices, monitoring patient's health conditions, having limited processing capabilities to the edge and/or the cloud. The problem of optimizing the energy consumption of the edge and cloud servers in this offloading scenario is crucial. However, existing research efforts focus on sensors or cloud energy optimization. They do not consider the edge and cloud as part of the offloading strategy. In this paper, we address this void by proposing a novel energy-aware offloading algorithm for smart connected healthcare, which optimizes the energy of the edge-cloud computing platform for compute-intensive applications. The experimental results show that our proposed algorithm is a promising approach to energy savings. © 2021 IEEE.

Edge-cloud computing is an emerging computational model that allows offloading of service requests by the autonomous mobile agents from the edge-server to the cloud-server. This is to reduce the network latency prevalent in the cloud-IoT model. However, Quality-of-Service (QoS)-Aware computation offloading in a heterogeneous and dynamic edge-cloud environment remains an open problem. In this paper, we propose a queuing theory-based edge-cloud computing framework for QoS-aware offloading in mobile autonomous agents. This framework model decides whether to execute an incoming request to the edge-server on the edge itself or to offload to one of the heterogeneous cloud servers such that the request’s execution time is the minimum. To model a request’s execution time, we consider the processing capabilities and the queues overheads of the edge and cloud servers, and the edge-cloud communications’ time. The details of the evaluation results, using dataset generated from real-life scenarios, are presented in the paper. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Renewable energy is gaining wide attention to address the issues, such as depleting resources and environmental degradation, linked with the current non-renewable energy. However, storing renewable energy is challenging. Consequently, energy trading is required to transfer the surplus amount of renewable energy from the prosumers to the consumers. The current centralized energy trading system is less secure and involves large transmission losses and high overheads. The decentralization, replication, immutability, and transparency characteristics of blockchain show a promising potential to address the inherent issues of centralized energy trading. However, the existing blockchain-based energy trading suffers from the drawbacks such as limited scalability, high energy loss, and low transaction throughput. In this paper, we propose a secure and privacy-preserving lightweight blockchain for energy trading that reduces the computational and communication overhead compared to the bitcoin network. This is by clustering the prosumers and perform the energy trading through a cluster head. Our experimental results show the potential of our architecture. © 2021 IEEE.
