This paper discusses a distributed fuzzy system for a set of robots engaged in securing inside or outside of a building and detecting any intruder. Each robot receives information from other robots but makes its own decision to engage in a particular activity such as patrol, inspection, intruder chasing. This decision is to best for overall objectives of the team and also to satisfy its own constraints such as its existing battery power. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a powerful technique for imaging cardiovascular diseases. The introduction of cardiovascular MRI into clinical practice is however hampered by the lack of efficient and reliable automatic image analysis methods. This paper focuses on the automatic evaluation of the perfusion of blood in the myocardium (the heart muscle) from cardiac MR perfusion image series, acquired using contrast-enhanced ECG-triggered MRI. We have developed a semi-automatic quantitative analysis method with which the perfusion image series can be analysed in only a few minutes. The method is described in this paper and preliminary validation results are presented. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.

Recently, much attention is drawn for integrating MANET with Internet in order to extend network coverage and applications domain of ad hoc networks. In this paper, we propose a modified Dynamic Sequence Routing method for providing a route between MANET and Internet through a gateway. In the proposed scheme we introduce a flag field in the packet to differentiate whether the packet is destined to MANET or to Internet. The gateway provides network address translation functionality by maintaining a table for mapping between the local and the global addresses. In order to verify the performance of our system we have run a set of computer simulations using the OPNET modeler. The performance in terms of through and delay are compared with those of the conventional method. The simulation results show that our method is superior to the conventional method.

This paper describes a new tree-based routing method which can be used to connect heterogeneous networks. In the proposed method, a source node located in one network sends packets to a group of nodes in another network. In our scenario, a source node normally belongs to a mobile ad hoc network, while a group of nodes consists of sensor nodes in the specified geographical region. The source node sends a packet to destination nodes in order to aggregate sensor data. Our protocol attains energy efficiency and accuracy by incorporating a metric for constructing the tree according to routes. The metric is calculated using parameters such as power and neighborhood connectivity. Before constructing a tree, hello messages are sent, depending on local mobility, for updating the list of neighbors. After constructing the tree, the link lifetime is evaluated periodically in order to maintain the freshness of a link along the route. In order to verify the performance of the proposed scheme, we conducted a set of computer simulations using the OPNET modeler. We measured the performance of the system in terms of delay, packet loss and accuracy of packet delivery. Results are compared to those of a conventional method. The results show that the proposed method improves efficiency by as much as 20% compared with that of a conventional method.

Wireless local area networks are presently widely deployed so that different stations can potentially associate with an access point (AP). The AP selection strategy is one of the significant research areas for wireless local area networks. The selection strategy solves the relevant problem of which AP can be selected and associated with a station so that efficient resource utilization can be obtained. Rather than merely choosing the AP with the strongest received signal strength, however, we calculate the effective throughput for each neighboring AP and use the result as a basis for the AP selection. Referencing the throughput is better than referencing the signal strength because the network may contain a severe load imbalance. We performed computer simulations using the OPNET modeler in order to verify the performance of our scheme. The results show us that our proposed selection method outperforms the conventional one in terms of throughput.

Due to the resource limitations of sensor nodes, providing security protocols is a particular challenge in sensor networks. A popular proposed method is the neighborhood based key agreement protocol (NEKAP), which is an improvement over the well-known Localized Encryption and Authentication Protocol (LEAP). NEKAP is an efficient and light-weight protocol, but includes loopholes through which adversaries may launch replay attack by successfully masquerading as legitimate nodes and thereby compromise the communications over the network. In this paper, we present a modified security protocol for wireless sensor networks. As in NEKAP and LEAP protocol, we provide four types of keys in each node, which adapt to different security requirements. In addition, we present a new key agreement protocol with low-overhead performance. Also the improvement on the performance is discussed and analyzed on several typical attacks found in wireless sensor networks, i.e., replay attack. The performance verification through using a qualitative analysis indicates that our new security protocol can enhance the security resilience of wireless sensor networks better than the conventional methods.

In this paper, we propose a provision of usercentric home photo album system and albuming functions to support it. The main idea of the user-centric photo album is to enable users to organize and browse their photos along the semantically meaningful axes that are situation, personidentity, and category. Experiment results showed that the proposed method would be useful to album photos based on human perception. © IEEE.

Semantic segmentation, which refers to pixel-wise classification of an image, is a fundamental topic in computer vision owing to its growing importance in robot vision and autonomous driving industries. It provides rich information about objects in the scene such as object boundary, category, and location. Recent methods for semantic segmentation often employ an encoder-decoder structure using deep convolutional neural networks. The encoder part extracts feature of the image using several filters and pooling operations, whereas the decoder part gradually recovers the low-resolution feature maps of the encoder into a full input resolution feature map for pixel-wise prediction. However, the encoder-decoder variants for semantic segmentation suffer from severe spatial information loss, caused by pooling operations or convolutions with stride, and does not consider the context in the scene. In this paper, we propose a dense upsampling convolution method based on guided filtering to effectively preserve the spatial information of the image in the network. We further propose a novel local context convolution method that not only covers larger-scale objects in the scene but covers them densely for precise object boundary delineation. Theoretical analyses and experimental results on several benchmark datasets verify the effectiveness of our method. Qualitatively, our approach delineates object boundaries at a level of accuracy that is beyond the current excellent methods. Quantitatively, we report a new record of 82.86% and 81.62% of pixel accuracy on ADE20K and Pascal-Context benchmark datasets, respectively. In comparison with the state-of-the-art methods, the proposed method offers promising improvements. © 2021, CC BY.

A noise in digital image degrades the performance of image processing. These images are most often used in medical field for diagnosis and treatment. Thus, there is a huge demand for high quality images from the medical field. The current algorithms to process useable images are derived using Gaussian blur filter. However, using such isotropic diffusion technique, the filter cuts away pertinent information within the image. The high noise level in an image will blur organs in medical images such as in MRI. In order to accommodate the loss of information while maintaining the quality of the image, an anisotropic diffusion filter has been developed. The anisotropic diffusion filter uses heat equation and the only downfall of the technique is lengthy process time. The purpose of this study is to decrease the processing time using parallel processors through the optimization of GPU.

Protocol architecture for a web-sensor gateway interconnecting internet and wireless sensor network is investigated. The web-sensor gateway is to deliver data between TCP/IP and Zigbee/IEEE802.15.4 protocols, transparently. Since the gateway provides a means to remotely control and aggregate sensor data over the internet, it needs to be designed in the view point of users and in their convenience. In accordance, the common gateway interface technology satisfying users on the web browser to efficiently manage and query the sensors in the wireless sensor networks, ubiquitously, is also introduced.
